Raw Weston Price / Re: Meal planning
« on: April 15, 2012, 01:36:51 am »
Hi eveheart, yes, would love to chat about shopping in the area and I'll PM my contact info.  Do you have other local friends who are RPD'ers? Maybe we can talk about menu and strategies too. I'm going to check out Marin Sun Farms and see if it's possible to get unfrozen beef.

Raw Weston Price / Re: Meal planning
« on: April 14, 2012, 12:55:46 pm »
I'm in northern California (sf bay area) and while I'm not wealthy I am willing to spend on food, such as raw dairy, pastured soy and corn-free eggs from local farms, and grass-fed beef (although I get the beef at Whole Foods and always feel vaguely worried that I can't trust them - but since I'm unwilling to freeze, I can't find another source). I have AV book, and have used some of those recipes, although none of them will work for my husband. I also am reluctant to send obviously raw meat to school with my 6-year-old kindergartener because the cliques are already hell and I don't want to give them any ammunition. She does eat raw beef and butter just as prescribed in the weight-loss cycle of AV primal diet, and drinks a shake most days, as well as a tiny amount of the green veggie juice he prescribed for me (celery, cilantro, cucumber, zucchini, and carrot + raw honey). It would help to have some meal planning/shopping list type help that would allow me to easily provide other alternatives that she and my husband could eat so I'm not making 2 or 3 different meals or having to do entire meals every day - although most menu planners I've sampled end up accomplishing that by using batch prep/freezing, and I'd rather not do the freezing (although, if I'm willing to bend and allow some cooking, maybe I might as well bend and allow freezing too, sigh....)

Raw Weston Price / Meal planning
« on: April 14, 2012, 05:13:57 am »
Does anyone have suggestions for raw menu plan services? I find I have been following, more or less, the Primal diet by AV but it is hard to stay consistent, social situations and family are not onboard, and I'm looking for help with menu plans that are raw mostly but incorporate perhaps some cooking, and true to concepts of AV and/or Weston Price. I am not very organized on my own but want some help with planning, shopping lists, recipes etc on a weekly basis so I can get consistent healthy, efficient meals made for myself and my family. Haven't found anything yet that fits the bill.

Goodsamaritan, just wondering how it goes with the Blue Ice?

Wow, that does sound counter-intuitive to me, but obviously meets your needs. How do you feel about AV's warnings about salt? Do you eat as much as you crave, or try to limit it?

I was thinking of trying a yogurt starter from Cultures from Health for counter-top culturing for more consistent and perhaps tastier results, but they have been freeze-dried and I wonder about the effects of that.

I heard AV recommend spitting in milk and culturing at room temp to make yogurt - has your own bacteria doing the pre-digestion that way. I have tried it and sometimes the yogurt is tasty, other times not at all.  Has anyone else tried this and had more consistent results? I'm wondering if a tiny bit of honey added at the start would help the taste, if not too much to act as an inhibitor.

Primal Diet / CLO + butter oil, fermentation
« on: October 18, 2011, 02:10:45 pm »
I had my sister, 50-ish and pretty vegetable-oriented (anti-raw) with recent weight-loss, fatigue and anxiety, convinced to try the Green Pastures CLO + butter oil, and then she had some testing done by some provider that showed she is "sensitive" to dairy and brewer's yeast and egg whites. She now believes it's best to avoid fermented foods, condiments, and food products containing dairy, baker's yeast, and brewer's yeast, hence the Green Pastures CLO + butter oil is also out. She wants to try the Nordic Naturals CLO. Can anyone share any reasoning that would alleviate the concerns about dairy and fermentation, also whether Nordic Naturals would be acceptable alternative to Green Pastures? I did suggest that pasteurization is more likely the problem than the dairy per se, and am also going to mention that AV suggests unheated honey can also cure the enzyme deficiency that causes some to have problems even with raw dairy.

that sounds right, i thought about it and looked up cow/goat body temp and 104 is the upper limit of normal.

Does anyone know the maximum temperature cheese can be made at and still be considered raw, according to AV?

I'm travelling in LA the next few days, can anyone point me toward good raw milk, unsalted cheese and butter from grass-fed cows?
Thanks!

OP stopped making the unsalted cheese about 6 months ago due to lack of demand

Thanks for the comments.  Still not sure how to tell if the mature brown ones are really free of pesticides, none locally carry the organic label.

Primal Diet / coconut cream
« on: June 18, 2011, 03:39:11 am »
Does anyone have information about coconuts? I was eating a lot of coconut cream we made ourselves from young Thai coconuts bought at Whole Foods, but from what I've read they are probably sprayed with something once they're hulled.  I've also read that coconut palms are not usually sprayed, so the ones in hulls are theoretically safe - although I don't know how to tell if they're overly old?  Has anyone researched this to know where they can be purchased organic or with confidence that they haven't been sprayed? I would love to have the coconut cream back in my regular diet - purchasing it ready-made is prohibitively expensive.

Interesting, never heard of water kefir, can you give the recipe?  I would also like to know how the kimchi is made.

Primal Diet / Survey re: Kombucha, beet kvass
« on: May 26, 2011, 02:59:09 am »
I'm curious how Primal Diet adherents feel about kombucha and beet kvass?  I was interested in kombucha because it helps my husband stay away from soda, of course the tea is cooked in the process. Beet kvass is raw, although not as appealing to him in that way. Any other fermented foods that you eat or believe to have some value?

Primal Diet / Raw honey
« on: May 18, 2011, 04:15:17 am »
Can anyone recall the temperature above which AV says honey cannot be heaten? Gibson's Golden honey claims their honey sits in a heated jacket before going to the bottling pump. They claim it doesn't go above body temp.

What about raw chicken, how do people like/eat it? I don't care for it raw at all, has to be dressed up.

Primal Diet / Chocolate?
« on: February 14, 2011, 05:24:28 am »
In the new products list I got in November, a source for raw cocoa beans is listed.  I understood AV didn't recommend any chocolate at all, instead carob is a substitute.  Does anyone know if he has changed his stance on that?

Primal Diet / Re: egg whites for vision
« on: February 14, 2011, 05:23:27 am »
In my copy of "We Want To Live" it's pp 249-250, under "vision." At that time he had been experimenting with washing his eyes with raw egg whites a couple times a week, and had continual, gradual improvement in vision.

Primal Diet / Carbs in the a.m.
« on: February 13, 2011, 03:32:23 am »
Aajonus mentioned at a recent talk that carbs shouldn't be eaten until 6 hours after getting up, at which point all the glycogen has been made for the day from pyruvate.  I'm not sure why this is important - and why glycogen made from glucose isn't ok - does anyone have an answer for that?  Also, he recommends a coffee substitute in his book made with hot water, 2-5tbs honey, and 1/2 lemon +/- vanilla extract, and since most people drink coffee in the a.m., I'm wondering how this squares with the first recommendation and would be interested in any thoughts about this.

Thanks for your replies, these are good ideas. I agree that it's "in the mind" and that's not always easy to change. I have ordered pemmican from US Wellness meat, but my understanding is that it's not truly raw.  I may have to experiment with the aged meat, although I usually find myself repulsed when it's been in the fridge more than a few days and starts to look gray and a bit slimy. Might try a smaller piece because my frugality gene would be bothered by wasting a whole roast if it didn't work ou
