Exercise / Bodybuilding / Re: the importance of exercise
« on: May 05, 2011, 08:42:03 pm »
I never get tired of weight lifting. I have been lifting weights 3-4 times a week for 8 years and I look forward to it each time I go.

For you, maybe. By contrast, I LOVE working out. Not all days (some days it sucks), but generally I really dig it.

The bonus is that it makes me more capable when I engage in physical activities...from swimming to hiking to playing freeze-tag with the kids to loading gear to....you get the idea.

I too looooooooove working out. It is not boring at all!

The only plant oil that I would ever eat and do eat is coconut oil. Olive oil is high in omega 6s.

Eggs and fish are probably the best sources of D.

Yes, you are right, it may be very unwise to rely completely on muscle meats only.

But my question was: What kind of problems did you experience on such a muscle meat only ZC diet?

Löwenherz

Nothing outwardly, but luckily I only did muscle meat only for about 6 months or so, before I got more into paleo eating and research and adapted paleo principles to being ZC. I was fine for years as a vegetarian--no outward issues--but luckily I did not stick to that. Muscle meat itself has lots of Vitamin B12, B6, zinc, selenium, etc. but is very deficient in Vitamin A, D, K2, etc.

1 oz.? I can easily eat one pount of beef liver in one meal. Maybe I should eat liver more often...

Löwenherz

Yep, 1 oz. of calf liver (the most nutrient dense) has tons of Vitamin A, copper, etc. I already do fantastically well micro-nutrient wise, except for anything having to do with carbohydrate metabolism, which is useless to me (i.e. vitamin C), so a little liver a few times a week is all I need.

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Re: Low or Zero Carb Endurance Athletes?
« on: May 01, 2011, 05:29:57 am »
I disagree. Stamina/endurance is very important.

Agree on stamina, but not on endurance exercise. Weight-bearing exercise > endurance based exercise. I assumed we were talking about something ridiculous like long-distance running, but perhaps I was mistaken.

Probably not. But endurance is boring and not that healthy anyway.

Hey L.

Sorry I am late...I eat about 80%+ calories from fat. Some days its more close to 90%.

That would be way too low in protein for me, but I lift a lot. I find protein very satiating.

Nice. Calf liver is my preference, but I got beef liver this week.

I think there is not ENOUGH value placed on healthy, nutrient dense foods. ZIOH is a prime example.

I only eat one meal a day, so I cannot just make a meal of muscle meat. But if you ate multiple meals, it would be fine.

The only time I do a muscle meat only meal is on the occasion I have to eat out at a restaurant, like on a date.

con't

and coconut oil and made sure to get some gelatinous organs like tongue and pork ear and nutrient dense organs like liver and heart. Just muscle meat is ridiculously stupid. I admit to my stupidity on doing it.

Just a MEAL of (fatty) muscle meat only is absolutely OK, for me.

Why do you think that a muscle meat only ZC diet is insane? What kind of problems did you experience?

Aren't there many successful dieters on such a diet at ZIOH? (I was never a member, just heard of it)

Löwenherz

No carnivorous group in nature ever ate just muscle meat. If by "successful" you mean lose weight, sure. You can lose weight on any diet. I did not have any problems, but I am glad I did not stick to muscle meat only. There is very little if any vitamin A and organs and eggs are super nutrient dense. It is stupid to live on Wal-Mart hamburger rolls and think you are eating like the Inuit or that that is in anyway a complete diet.

After I finally erased my brainwashed ideas  that just eating muscle meat was a healthy zero carb diet, I added tons of eggs, especially yolks, grassffed butter

Sorry it was so-called "raw" coconut butter, not coconut chunks.

Do you know  the brand? I get the big 1 gallon bucket of Nutiva Organic Extra Virgin CO on amazon.

Hey again - I click on "show unread posts" and I seem to be following you around.  Do you freeze the liver?  The smallest amount I can buy is 1 lb.  I dried it off and put in on paper plates covered with wax paper in the fridge.  I don't know how long it will take for me to eat a whole pound.

How do you eat the tongue?  Do you peel it?  Isn't it pretty tough?  I've had it before but always cooked.

I'm still a little squeamish about raw chicken so I don't know about gizzards.  Maybe in the future.

Hey, Larry. No, I do not freeze the liver. I just cut off a 1 oz. portion, then cut it into bite size pieces (you recall I weigh all my food) and just pan sear until it starts to brown but is still raw/rare. I then put it in the bowl with my other meat/eggs/organs and add butter or coconut oil. I swallow the pieces while adding the CO or butter. Then I enjoy the rest of my meal!

I get beef and pork tongue at the Korean market. The beef tongue was already peeled and sliced, but not the pork tongue. Either way is fine for me. It is chewy and delicious. I am not a good gauge for "tough" because I LIKE tough meat--I see many see tough as a negative.

I don't eat raw but rare but Tyler lets me stay :). I eat all my meat super rare that it is near raw. The gizzards I do the sameas the liver and tonue. Just pan sear to warm.

I would say yes. Liver is a fantastic source of Vitamin A, copper and folate. It is the one organ that I eat just because of its nutritional value and not because I like the taste. I looooove heart, tongue and gizzards (except from lamb--hate the taste of lamb).

But liver is so nutrient dense that I take 1 oz. 2 to 3 times a week and it is easy to swallow with coconut oil and grassfed butter!

Hi, Larry! You are one of the people I miss from the ZIOH site.

I hope you eat more organs and egg yolks. Muscle meat only is a bad idea in the long run. I cannot believe how much time I wasted eating just ground beef.

Well a side effect of eating zero carb seems to be a low body fat percentage (and muscle, since most people seem to need carbs to bulk up too),

Not if you eat enough calories and enough protein and do weight lifting.

1600 calories would be very fatty beef.  85/15 ground round is 1000 calories a pound.

I would never make a meal of just muscle meat only. Made that mistake on the fake ZC. A pound of 85/15 grassfed PLUS either eggs or organ meats (heart, liver, gizzards, tongue...) AND grassfed butter OR extra virgin coconut oil. A muscle meat only ZC diet is insane. I wish I never did it at one point.

Presumably they're still OK with butter as always, yes?

Oh, early on when I was using butter liberally, Dear Leader was against it--he was "suspicious" of butter. No, muscle meat only is the name of the game there. So sad and although I am grateful that I found ZIOH because I realized ZC was possible, I wasted time on the muscle meat only thing and thankfully got into paleo and realized that a true ZC diet needs organ meats, eggs and grassfed fats.

A minor update: some folks at the Dirty Carnivore forum reported that the ZIOH forum is apparently done with its milk and ice cream experiments and they are apparently back to their original definition of ZC as excluding milk and milk-containing products like yoghurt.

Oh, yes, I was reading. Since dairy fell out of favor with the Leader, it is now shunned again!
