Title: Greetings from Sarav...
Post by: Sarav on October 01, 2008, 12:43:56 am
hi all,

Just to introduce myself I am a sort of health nut but with a wretched body! :) - Chronic Fatigue, Irritable Bowel, Yeast are but few syndromes that I live with....   :-[    (oh yes, and depression and seems all food intolerances....)

this site was interesting - and i found the expert answers in yahoo very enlightning in important areas such as dairy, detox, etc...
i was once been a vegetarian (abt 5 years) - yes have been there - and ruined my already feeble physique...
all tried many different diets - starch/ anti-starch, fibre/ anti-fibre, carb/no-carb, fruit/no-fruit, macro, veggie, rotational, etc..etc..
at last paleo helped a great deal - raw paleo lot better.. tho i am not yet to a normal functional level...

thanks guys for the good work...  hope to learn new things, and find some panacea if possible :) just to become a normal person...

cheers

Excuse me if I'm completely ignorant regarding this, but aren't most Indians some type of vegetarian? Has this been an issue for you?

And second, welcome! It is great that you're getting better on this diet!

Not all Indians are vegetarians, but I believe there is a large "nutritional sub-culture" of Indians who practice vegetarianism. From what I understand, it also takes on a sort of quasi-religious aspect. Feel free to correct me on this, though, Sarav. And welcome!

yes, Squall... you are right... there are many religious sects that practise vegetarianism mostly lacto-vegetarianism... prominent among them are the Brahmins...
and of course there are a majority of others who take meat but restricted to only mutton, chicken and fish --- as cow is sacred so beef is no-no item among Hindus and they dont consider pork mostly.

Some vegetarians consider eggs and fish as vegetables (i think Bengalis)

I come from a family that eats the above standard meat types - I have open to all types of meat (ofcourse, my family members forbid me to beef/pork which i dont listen whenever possible -- btw beef is bit allergic to me it seems, it doesnt stay in my stomach for long -- may be as I am allergic to dairy even raw dairy it may so to beef too)

It's very unusual to experience any form of allergy towards meat, let alone beef.

I would suggest that you go in for raw glandulars(thyroid/adrenal) either from organic, grassfed farms(the best and cheapest option) or Dr Ron's website:-

http://www.drrons.com/

I had similiar health-problems as you had(irritable bowel, chronic fatigue, and the main reason why I went vegetarian and then Raw Vegan/Fruitarian, prior to going rawpalaeo, was, in hindsight,  because I had adrenal burnout/hypothyroidism and my body increasingly couldn't digest any cooked animal-food at all. Here's some info re this:-

thanks TylerDurden...

that website is an interesting read particularly adrenal part - and very informative about minerals deficiencies.. it rings bell when i read most of the adrenal burnout syndromes...

planning to try out something in the direction of mineral deficiencies...

sometime back i had read heart palpitations and magnesium deficiency and how veggie soup helped - and also how poor circulation particularly cold hand and feet helped by magnesium - I usually have these symptoms whenever i had good fatty-meaty meal and when I eat veggies, the hands and feet are quite warm... this I thought may be due to macro nutrient ratio... and Quantity still matters for me it seemed..

i relate to most of the thyroid (hypo) and adrenal issues...

thanks this glandular perspective and mineral viewpoint throws some light! thanks!!

I cured my IBS very easily with this diet.  Low carb helped, RVAF cured it. I had it for 8-9 years really bad, it's a distant memory now. I was told it can't be cured and can only be managed pppfftttt...lies

Yeast is a tricky one, my advice is to go zero carb and avoid anti-fungals (including natural ones) but if your going to cure it you need to more importantly go ZERO STRESS. I've got yeast issues too.

Good Luck

thanks wodgina,

oops.. i forgot to tell you the forum that am not 100% raw... except for eggs... but i do very light cooking just to turn the color of the meat... thinking i lose little nutrient that way also I could avoid flaring up my family members antagonism and fears...

i tried zero-carb few times but somehow i get too tired (more mentally) without a little veggies -- at the same time more veggies is a problem so i keep it to the optimum. i fear i may get magnesium deficient and a bit depressed...

Sarav,

How difficult is it to ask Indians to give up wheat?
I know wheat is a staple food in your country... chapati, etc.
But some really sick people must learn to give it up.
How did you give up eating wheat?

Being South Indian we used to eat Rice as staple food unlike the North Indians (those who live in northern states... Delhi, Maharastra, Rajasthan, etc) would do live on wheat...

I slowly weaned away from Rice.. first milk, then all rice items except fermented rice dishes like Idli, Dosa, then even that... as my order of intolerance grew..  socialising has become bit difficult for me these days... but  I can trade off that as I am a bit loner with much interests in literarature and philosophy...

as I am bengali, I don't think we consider eggs and fish as veggies but we do eat them in great numbers  :D

tell me about it, a lot of elders I know have rampant diabetes and arthritis but cannot, will not, shall not ever give up their rotis and chapatis - they claim it gives them strength or something like that...

Many Indians are hopeless with regards to wheat addiction then.

I'm a Filipino and the worst torture you can do to a Filipino is to deny him RICE.  I was able to overcome this programming through education and fasting.

yes, it is so with south indians too regarding rice as like filipinos (goodsamaritan mentioned)

but when u are at the end of sickness and could barely live, you would like to try something or other just to become normal... it is a trade-off and  a better one at that as you are not confined-at-home as a vegetable..!

but now and then i feel the loss of such a good soothing starch (rice,wheat).... but i know what my body says! :)

Greetings to you Sarav,

I kind of know where you're coming from, in that I was vegan for years.  At the end I was so stiff, etc, so low energy, many problems.  I had to change if there was a chance I could be better.  My immediate family is vegan, so it didn't make them very happy when I told them of the change I was about to make.  Whole grain rice and cooked legumes were a staple of mine for years.

Blessings of good health, peace, love, understanding and happiness to you,

RawZi

Thanks RawZi, it is always an encouragement to find kindred spirits...
those were dark days, i lived without much info - no internet, not many books available here, unaware i lived many years without animal foods, always hoping to get better even when i find many health problems thinking that they were all detox... how delusional these ideas are..! how we fail to recognise problems by blinding ourselves dogmatically with theories when we have no access to adequate information...

anyway it feels good atlast to find something workable to good extent... :)
ofcourse, illness taught us very many things which the healthy may not even have a chance to learn...!
