General Discussion / Re: Raw rotten Mackerel and Tuna, DANGEROUS?
« on: March 04, 2014, 11:37:31 am »
Could you give some examples?

Lots of high chicken, especially early on in the diet. Heck, lots of raw chicken ever. No water. No exercise.

Here's an interview with AV - http://drbass.com/aajonus.html

"My dyslexia and autism, which no one understood at the time, embarrassed and frustrated my parents. My dyslexia was to the extent that the printed page would swirl and I got vertigo. If I tried to read I would vomit. I tried holding the page down with my finger but my parents and teachers would not let me. Because I was borderline autistic and sickly I rarely played with other children.
Near my 10th birthday I developed peritonitis which was a severe intestinal infection. Doctors misdiagnosed it as appendicitis. When they discovered that my appendix was fine, they took it out anyway "in case it causes you problems in the future".

My bones were brittle, and I regularly broke bones in my limbs. I was diagnosed as borderline diabetic at 13. I developed angina pectoris muscle spasms in and around the heart by age 15½. I was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at that age.
At 19 I developed an ulcer that turned tumorous after medical therapies. After surgery the incision turned tumorous from outer skin to stomach. It was large. Doctors ordered it irradiated. and that caused me to develop Multiple Myeloma (blood and bone cancers). Multiple Myeloma survivors are less than 0.01%. Doctors ordered chemotherapy, which is like napalming the body, destroying mostly healthy cells to try and eliminate a few cancer cells. For every cancer cell that is killed by chemotherapy, 1 billion healthy cells are killed. That is like killing everybody on the planet because you don't like 6 people.
The chemotherapy made me a semi-invalid, and gave me psoriasis and bursitis. I refused to continue chemo after 3 months. I chose to die rather than be completely crippled for the rest of my short life. At that point I had had 7 "incurable" diseases."

At any point you could add "and then my leg was severed, and wild boars brought me food to help me regenerate it," and it would fit in fine.

Sounds made up.

Rubbish.

If I had a nickel.. Lol TD do you notice that a lot of times when someone mentions something you disagree with it's always "rubbish," "that's absurd," or some other remark expressing how much you disagree?

I can't say one way or the other that it's dangerous or not. What I can say is that Aajonous gave a lot of potentially dangerous, and (likely) made up advice.

I've been taking 3,000 mg vitamin c 3x a day. Since I'm on such a low dose of geodon (5 mg) and it's supposed to decrease dopamine levels.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ziprasidone#Schizophrenia

"Ziprasidone's efficacy in treating the positive symptoms of schizophrenia is believed to be mediated primarily via antagonism of the dopamine receptors,"

"Ziprasidone is effective in the treatment of schizophrenia, though evidence from the CATIE trials suggests it is less effective than olanzapine and of around equal effectiveness to quetiapine. Doses of around 120mg daily and higher are required.[2]"

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19193337

"Synthesis of the monoamine neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine is regulated by L-methylfolate, a derivate of the vitamin folate."

So I've decreased my dose of methylfolate to 5 mg (was 10 mg) - that way as the effect of the geodon's reducing dopamine decreases, the methylfolate won't cause a big increase in dopamine production.

I've been taking about 8 grams of glycine 3x daily, 50 mg iodine, 1.5-3 tsp salt, and I recently added in a chromium supplement.

Phil,
The battle of the diet gurus is, if nothing else, amusing to watch.  They all claim they've found the dietary Holy Grail.  The next thing you know, there's a stampede in another direction towards a different cliff, again labeled "the dietary Holy Grail". Years ago it was Ehret, Walker, Bragg, Tobe, Sheldon, and Carrington.  Then came Wigmore, Kulvinskas, and Pritikin.  Shortly followed up by Atkins, Sears, and Diamond.  Then there's the new crop Asprey, Kresser, Moore, Cordain, Taubes, Durant, Sisson, Hunt, Wolf, Jaminet, Devany, and Peat, et al. each with their own biases and agendas.

Ehret championed the mucusless diet, Walker- raw juices, Bragg-apple cider vinegar and fasting, for Sheldon it was cherries, and Carrington thought the perfect food was chocolate.

For Wigmore and Kulvinskas it was wheatgrass juice, rejuvilac, and sprouts.   Pritikin was all about ultra low fat, high carb, moderate protein.

The current crop seems to be all over the map as well, though they seem to have more of a herd mentality.  They all shift direction like a school of fish - almost in unison - but with the occasional straggler that peddles hard to catch up with the pack.

Today's hot topic seems to be "resistant starch" (last week it was "safe starch") and so the drama continues.  Just as all the gurus of the past discovered about their pet beliefs, RS will soon be eclipsed by the next Holy Grail, and relegated to the ash heap of history.  Stay tuned.

Life is short, and I have determined to waste as little of it as possible, for death will overtake each of us soon enough, regardless of what we choose eat.  Dietary wars were waged long before I was born, (even the Bible weighs in on the subject), and will still be raging long after I'm gone.  Diet gurus will come and go as sure and as regularly as Paris fashions.

If you think agonizing over resistant starch (used to be called fiber in the olden days) is a good use of your time, then by all means have at it.  For me, other things are more important.  I think I'll continue to do what works well for me, and spend little of my precious time worrying over the constant hysteria churned up by the gurus.  What time I have left on this earth is better spent in my shop and with family and friends doing the things I love to do.

Rest assured, if what I'm doing stops working or problems arise, I'll change in a heartbeat. Until then I'm going to burry my head in the dietary sand and ignore all the clatter from the gurus.

Lex

I'm glad someone finally mentioned the peril of the diet gurus.

So GS, any update on how your salt experiment is going?

I've been taking 1.5-3 tsp daily and it's been working well for me. I'm also taking 50 mg iodine (Lugol's) daily.

Thanks every one for ur replies on pyroluria. I have some questions to ask you. I know a patient who is ONLY 17th yrs old boy and suffering from severe depression for the past 2 yrs along with anxiety. Recently after accidentally taking potassium bicarbonate he is suffering super confusion, lower heartbeat and numbness in jaws.

His orthomolecular Dr prescribes him zinc. He takes one tablet at night. But he feels vomiting . What is the solution for that? In past taking mg, he gets diarrhea. Should he still can take mg? He used to take mg equal or more amount of calcium 2/3 hrs back of mg intake. Orthomolecular Dr diagnoses his pyroluria based on the white spots in his finger nails and not recalling dreams.

If he had bad results with magnesium he probably used a bad form. I take about 1,000 mg magnesium daily from magnesium bound to amino acids, and magnesium chloride - those are the best forms.

For pyroluria, I'd recommend the acrive forms of the B vitamins. A good b complex as the basis (like the one from GI Pro Health [has active forms of B12 and B9]), and add to that B6 P5P, and B2 riboflavin-5-phosphate. I'd also recommend some vitamin c, and for good measure all the fat soluble vitamins (Vitamin A/not carotenes, Vitamin E, K1+K2, and D).

If they're having trouble taking the zinc supplement, it could be the wrong form or they may have a sensitive stomach.

http://umm.edu/health/medical/altmed/supplement/zinc

"Zinc is available in several forms. Zinc sulfate is the least expensive form, but it is the least easily absorbed and may cause stomach upset."

Good luck.

That sounds incredibly dangerous.

http://www.epa.gov/ttnatw01/hlthef/hydrochl.html

"Hydrochloric acid is corrosive to the eyes, skin, and mucous membranes.  Acute (short-term) inhalation exposure may cause eye, nose, and respiratory tract irritation and inflammation and pulmonary edema in humans.  Acute oral exposure may cause corrosion of the mucous membranes, esophagus, and stomach and dermal contact may produce severe burns, ulceration, and scarring in humans."

The salt has been going well, I've been taking 1.5-3 tsp daily. I'm still taking 50 mg iodine daily, and I'm taking 10 grams of glycine with each meal.

I was looking into Vitamin C - http://www.vitamincfoundation.org/mega_1_1.html - and I'm seeing that I likely haven't been getting the optimal amount. Today I'm increasing from 1,000 mg 3x per day, to 3,000 mg 3x per day. I may increase it after trying 3,000 mg 3x a day for a little bit.

I've been getting 1.5 tsp salt, plus what I put on food, plus an extra 1/4 tsp 2 or 3 times a day. I'm going to take 50 mg iodine today, and maybe increase to 10 g glycine per meal.

The 5 grams of glycine with each meal is going well. The 1.5 tsp of salt plus what I put on food has gone well. I increased my iodine consumption today to 25 mg.

So cool. Who knows how much more specific it can be. Maybe it's produced specifically to tailor a baby's genetics, or where they are in their growth, etc. and not just their gender.

I've been drinking distilled water for several years.

I'm going to decrease my salt to just the RDA, so I'll try to get about 100% of the RDA and not go over to start. I'm also upping my iodine to 1 drop (2.5 mg).

How did you take your 2 tsp of salt?

1.5 tsp in a large mason jar with enough water to make 3 cups, and drink a half a cup here and there through out the day. Then get more if I want more.

I'm noticing my posture is much better than it usually is. When reading the symptoms of mild sodium deficiency abnormalities in posture is one of the symptoms.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hyponatremia

"However, emerging data suggest that mild hyponatremia (plasma sodium levels at 131 mEq/L or above) is associated with numerous complications or subtle, presently unrecognized symptoms[6] (e.g., increased falls, altered posture and gait, reduced attention).[7]" - Reference included

So far I've had about 2 tsp today.

DaBoss, remind us of what kind of water you drink.  Is it RO?

I drink distilled water - and then add in 4 drops of blue ocean minerals, a pinch of unrefined salt, and generally Lugol's iodine to each gallon.

I increased my iodine to 2 mg today.

Makes sense. Definitely make sure you stay hydrated. But keep in mind that the 1.5 tsp should be about the daily value of salt.

Salt Your Way to Health 7 15 10

I personally am experimenting with the unrefined salt, Redmond's Real Salt. I haven't been getting the RDA, so I'm making sure I ingest 1.5-3 tsp to get at least the RDA.

Dr. Brownstein and the Weston Price Foundation both have very good information on the benefits of unrefined, mineral rich salt.

I'll be posting my results mostly in my journal, but a little here. Feel free to post your experiments if you choose to try ensuring you get at least the RDA of sodium. Remember to use an unrefined salt.

Wow, 3 tsp of salt a day huh?
Maybe they did not have refrigeration at that time and only ate cooked meat?
Maybe you could start a thread on this salt consumption thing and we can all exchange experiment results.
And I assume you don't live beside the beach?

I was looking at the RDA, and I saw that I wasn't even getting the RDA. 1/4 tsp is 22% of the RDA for sodium, and I was getting maybe 3/4-1 tsp daily. So I'm making sure I get at least the 1.5 tsp daily.

http://www.westonaprice.org/vitamins-and-minerals/salt-and-our-health

"The fundamental indicator of salt intake sufficiency points to 1.5 teaspoons (8 grams) of salt per day as the basic human requirement."

But it seems going up to about 3 tsp is fine.

"It is equally extraordinary that, without guidance or pressure of any kind, the consumption of salt around the world, for more than two centuries has remained in the range of 1.5 to three teaspoons (8-15 grams) per day, which, from all the available data, appears to hold the lowest risk for us. It lends support to the notion of the “wisdom of the body” at work through a mechanism that may not be as obvious as the typical sodium appetite so common in most other mammalian species, but effective nevertheless."

Yesterday I ingested 1.5+ tsp, but didn't quite get to 3.

They didn't have refrigeration, and they used the salt to preserve the meat. Still I think more salt is a good idea.

I'll make a thread in the WPF section.

I've done a little browsing the web to see how much salt people consumed 50-200 years ago, since I feel the amount I've been consuming isn't enough.

Here's what I've found

http://www.westonaprice.org/vitamins-and-minerals/salt-and-our-health

"HISTORICAL RATES OF SALT CONSUMPTION

It is of great interest that available data suggest Western societies consumed between three and 3.3 teaspoons (15-17 grams) of salt per day from the early 1800s until the end of World War II, based on military archives for prisoner-of-war and soldier rations around the world. During the Anglo-American War of 1812, despite its high cost, salt rations amounted to three teaspoons (15 grams) per day.37 American prisoners of war, incarcerated in Britain’s Dartmoor prison, bitterly complained that the 1.5 teaspoons (8 grams) of salt per day they received was part of “…scanty and meager diet for men brought up in the land of liberty, and ever used to feast on the luscious fruits of plenty…”38 Declassified World War II documents regarding rations fed to American prisoners of war show a ration of one hundred forty grams per week or 3.3 teaspoons (17 grams) per day.39

After World War II, when refrigeration began to displace salt as the main means of food preservation, salt consumption in the U.S. (and somewhat later in other countries) dropped dramatically to about half that rate, or nine grams (1.8 teaspoons) per day and, based on twenty-four hour urinary sodium data, has remained flat for the last fifty years.40 During that time, rates of hypertension have increased,41 thus casting doubt on any linkage between the two."

I'm going to start making sure from now on I consume at least 1.5-3 tsp daily. I'm likely to start at 1.5 tsp, and work up to 3 tsp.

(I'm using an unrefined salt - Redmond's Real Salt)
