Title: Where do you guys get fish roe?
Post by: CHK91 on March 09, 2011, 08:44:29 am
I have this massive craving for fish roe, but I really don't know how to get good sources. I remember having stewed fish roe sacks regularly years ago, and they were some of the best tasting food I have ever eaten. I have no idea how they taste raw yet.

EDIT: Wait... XD I just remembered that I had salmon/tuna roe sushi before.

Oriental markets sell unfrozen unsalted fish roe.

Are they usually from wild fish?

In the UK, I can get raw cod roe from a few fishmongers if I am prepared to look around. Cod is always wild, afaik. Other roe such as salmon roe/caviar is always precooked.

I get wild salmon caviar (salted). A good-quality brand shouldn't be cooked or processed beyond salted, as the product itself is so delicate.

Wildcaught salted salmon roe is not hard to come by (Eastern European food markets) and is way too salty and expensive! The sushi type roe sold at my local Asian market has additives and is also expensive. Fresh cod roe can be found at fish markets, but I found the taste too strong to be eaten in more than tiny amounts. I think the only good source is from the salmon or sturgeon that you catch yourself :)

I actually eat store-bought wild salmon roe for hydration due to salt content.

This is the brand I eat - http://www.solomonfalls.com/store/ (much cheaper in stores)

BTW, we have the same name (judging from your username  ;))
