Hot Topics / Need advice on raising happy children
« on: March 17, 2014, 02:52:59 am »
6 months ago I became a father of beautiful boy.

We are usually trained in math and science but no one teaches us probably most importand endavour on this planet - how to raise children.

People usually assume they know what is best for children or they just subsconsciously copy how it is done by their parents or enviroment.

I would like to actually open my mind and welcome  advice what I can provide to my boy so he will be happy person in this crazy modern world.

By "provide" i mean both food and non-food.

So far I have read "children: the challenge" and "Parent effectivness training" - two absolutely wonderful and helpful books.

Besides, I would like my boy to join scouts when he is old enough - it is great for learning social skills, self-discipline and connection to nature.

I would also like to provide him very healthy diet that is based mostly on fat of good quality (obviously ;))

Because I am my own boss, I can take as much vacation as I want to, so I would like him to travel with me so he could know this planet better.

What else is important?

General Discussion / Why natural tribes don't eat raw?
« on: March 17, 2014, 02:40:36 am »
I have just read     "Going Tribal" thread on the forum (by Aura) but I did not want to hackjack her wonderful topic so I create separate one to ask you about what I found interesting there.

Namely, many posters  said no natural tribes on the planet eat raw meat now. They all mostly cook their meals.

How come? Why do you think it is like this?

Health / I need your advice re: PCOS (women health issue)
« on: October 23, 2012, 05:04:05 pm »
My wife struggles with PCOS. It is called PCOS, but poly-cystic ovary syndrom is only a symptom of some problems with hormones (her body produces too much men hormones).

They only way  mainstream medicine heals, or rather "temporarily stops" this symptoms is by prescribing some strong drugs  that my wife cant really take because we want to have a baby as soon as possible.

The biggest distress that this health condition gives to my wife is the issue of hair falling out. Because it is caused by testosterone, the hair will never regrow so she knows that every hair she loses now, she loses forever :(

It is very sad for me to see her suffer and be helpless about it. She already eats very good diet, is very fit, works out each day , supplements with zinc, vit B complex, folic acid and nettle&horsetail for hair.

Hot Topics / Is meat hung for 28 days to mature good to eat?
« on: September 15, 2012, 01:31:22 am »
My friend who is from outside the raw paleo community and lifestyle asked me the question. I will quote it here because I think you will give him a better reply. I feel it is good idea but I do not have enough knowledge to say exactly why ? Question is:

"I can get good grass fed meat in London. The meat has been hung for 28 days to mature before it is sold. Is this ok or should it be eaten soon after its been killed? I've had contradictory feedback from suppliers."

Hi guys, I want to share a story with you about man who lives in my town in Poland.

First i met him when I was 9 years old boy - he organized the summer camp for scouts that I participated in. Now, as he came back from Mexico where he worked for few years, I offered him help in organizing camps again in Poland as I heard he is about to organize a few. And indeed we did few camps within last years.

This man has been born in 1925 so he is 87 years old now. He is very fit - he of course take part in this scout camps  and he is active there -talking long, sometimes 6-7 hours long walks, helping in building wooden buildings etc.. He even tried to play football with us this summer but he is rubbish at it so he got discouraged. But he was fit enough to be the goalkeeper.

He is professor of botanics and he managed to finish book that he has been writing for last two years now. This is  book on plant physiology. He is mentally very fit - with memory better than mine. He enjoys telling us very detailed stories about the war.

He is very cheerful person - all kids always love him. For example if they misbehave in the night in their tents and they hear some adult comming, they are relieved to realize it is him, not me. It is amazing but he is more like an older  friend to them. At the same time he accomplishes a lot, even at this age he is involved in all this things + some politics + successful marriage (60+ years together with one woman now). He has organized over 50 camps in his life. The one I took part in when I was young counted ~200 people. So it is rather a not easy thing to do. He speaks polish, english, spanish, ukrainian and german.

As far as his habits are concerned, the interesting thing is that he is not a health freak or something. Things like diets or healthy living do not occupy his mind at all. When I asked him what is his secret, it is what he said:

1) he eats 3 meals a day, and he never eat anything in between the meals. Not even healthy things. (so this could also be the form of my intermittent fasting in my opinion)
2) he does not drink coffee nor tea
3) he eats "as much eggs as he feels like"
4) he eats lots of of fish and as far red meats are concerned  - he does not fry anything. He says wife usually add some meat to the soup he eats and it boils with the soup.
5) he avoids white bread and margarine
6) he exercises every morning for 15 minutes
7) he has not drink alcohol since he has been 21. He says it is important for healthy neurological system

Hmmm..what else? If you want to know anything, you can - I will ask him then!

The series follows a different person each episode who has an eating disorder such as a selective eating disorder (an extremely restricted diet, often to the point of avoiding entire food groups), or food neophobia. With the help of a team of experts, a number of techniques are employed to help the person overcome their problems and develop more healthy diets.

Hot Topics / How do you handle cravings?
« on: October 29, 2011, 07:24:59 am »
OK, we know raw paleo is healthy diet/lifestyle but we sometimes, especially during transition period can't help liking pizza or cup of coffee.

I  know there is no magic rule to create a strong will but maybe you have some methods that help you stay true to your decisions?

Do you take notes, condition yourself with rewards, use other people to help you stay on track?
What do you do in the moment when a craving happens that help you?

General Discussion / Paleo breakfast ideas?
« on: October 19, 2011, 09:16:49 pm »
It has been a half of a year since I joined this board and started a transition stage to raw paleo diet. I am doing more or less ok - still have a lot of bad habits like too much alcohol, sweetened beverages like coffee and tea, but I am happy to report that I do not have that much cravings for sweets. In the past when I was raw vegan I eat huuuge amounts of sweets. Suprprisingly too I lost interest in fruit - they are neither nutritious for me nor appetizing in taste.

The problem is that this diet for me now lacks variety. It is ok for me with main meal (dinner or lunch) when it usually is a raw beef or raw salmon or steamed chicken breast (with veggie salad). But when it comes to evening meal or morning meal I have no ideas what to eat and therefore have tendency to eat unhealthy foods.

I do not know why but in the mornings I have no interest in meat or anything heavy. But I crave sweet things a lot. In the evenings - it is ok - I can eat whetever I feel like but i am not really interested that much in raw meat after I ate it for a dinner.

What do you guys eat as this smaller meals in the mornings and evenings?

Hot Topics / Daniel Vitalis on cooked meat
« on: October 11, 2011, 10:53:44 pm »
Most of you have probably already read Daniel Vitalis' post on "Vegans vs Carnivores": http://www.danielvitalis.com/2010/05/vegans-vs-carnivores/

It is a nice article that I mostly agree with. We as human beings need balance of veggies (for cleansing, detoxifing purposes) and meats (for building tissues). What makes me think though is his point that we humans adopted to Fire:

"Even more so than animals like the Bear that, while omnivorous, lack Fire, the Elemental tool that renders the inedible edible.  Sorry Rawfooders! We are a unique species, specifically adapted as omnivores, and with modifications to our anatomy that attest to this.  In fact, it seems to me that our anatomy demonstrates that we have adapted to Fire in the same way an organism like a fish might adapt to the Water, or a bird has adapted to the Air.  Our lack of hair being just one example.  Another is the fact that we have the smallest mouths and stomachs (compared to our body size) of any of the great apes seems to indicate a selection towards those who ate the softest and most condensed food sources.

A brief survey of those humans we call the “Indigenous” of the world, especially those who were Hunter/Gatherers reveals a diet that, while varying in the ratio of animal to plant food, still always contains both in ample degrees.  These people are always cooks, in that they are never found on “Raw Food Diets”.  They eat a mix of raw and cooked foods, as well as balancing animal foods against plant foods.  I know of no culture that is based solely on plant food, nor one built exclusively on animal foods."

If I understand it correct he suggests that we can thrive on meats as long as they are not overcooked. It is ok in his opinion to eat slightly processed meats (for example steamed salmon steak).

Is it really that straightforward as we think on this forum, that the less processed meat the healthier it is? Or maybe Daniel has some vaild points that meat is healthy as long as it is not cooked over  some threshold of time&temperture?

General Discussion / Redesigning food guide pyramid

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:USDA_Food_Pyramid.gif

Food pyramind recommended by USA Department of Agriculture is a huge crap. 40% of its base makes "Bread cereal and pasta" group.

How would your pyramide look like if you were to instruct the society?

What groups of food would you include and what percentages would you assign them?

General Discussion / How to start eating organs
« on: June 24, 2011, 03:49:19 am »
My next step in becoming ful raw paleo would be to start eating raw organs now. Does anyone have an idea how to make it easier for me?
I thought of buing a liver and blending it and mixing it with something. I do not know exactly with what..

Once I read about dr Kelleys who was verry successful in healing cancer (and he was murdered by establishment btw in some very shady circumstances) and part of his healing routine was mixed raw liver with orange juice. It does not sound very appetizing tough..

Welcoming Committee / Newcomer needs some expert advice
« on: March 23, 2011, 04:04:15 am »
Hello,
Throughout whole 2010 year I experimented with diets, cutting off more and more foods. Eventually, I became raw vegan, completely convinced that it is the best diet possible. I am concerned about animal rights etc but my choice was never ideological - I just look for diet that works best for my energy levels. Even tough first 40 days brought many positive effects, I found myself cheating on the diet a lot. The reasons where that I never felt full and at some point I could not look at and eat salads (my organism was fed up with this). In addidition i developed some glaze problems and candida.

Few days ago I surfed through amazon to see that Suzan Schneck - big raw vegan authority is no longer a vegan. I was shocked but soon I was to discover that neither is Paul Nisson and many other raw vegan gurus. Meanwhile I got here. I spent at least 20 hours since yesterday reading this board as well as Stanley Bass webpage that I found here.

And I think I am willing to give Paleo a try! From what I read so far I created few rules for myself:
- I give up or limit alcohol, sugar, coffee, tea, bread, pasta, dairy (it is not difficult as most of it was required in raw vegan diet)
- I eat no more than one fruit (or a cup of juiced fruit) a day
- I add 1-2 raw eggs yolks a day
- I eat blended or tossed veg salad (1 a day)
- I eat main meal that consist of raw meat
I think I could create 2 meals a day from these rules as I do not usually have appetite in the morning anyway.

I think I will have no problems with eating carpaccio if I prepare it well with spices. However,  I do not see myself eating organs or fish at the moment. Today I tried eating raw salmon but had to spit it out because it was terrible (i did not use any spices for this, not even salt).

So I would like to know if I should just try to jump into waters or maybe you recommend some transitory stage?
What do you think of my rules above?
What do you think of cooked potatoes - is it really that unhealthy?
What do you think of steamed fish - today I ate this salmon steamed and it was delicious and nourishing - maybe I could keep decreasing steaming time untill it can be eaten raw?
Do you have any advice for newbie as far as any other issues are concerned?
