Well, I get a hangover effect after eating cooked, so  suspect it's just the toxins in cooked foods such as AGes/HCAs which are causing fatigue, just as the congeners/preservatives in alcohol cause the fatigue/hangover effect, to a greater extent than theactual ethanol.

Try everything, like I said(doctors/dairy, whatever). Just don't stick to one remedy for ages if it doesn't work.

I've heard so many horror stories re hormone-replacement. What is  certain is that high doses of hormones are inherently detrimental to the body - not only are these artificial hormones, so are poorly absorbed by the human body by comparison, but also the human body always lowers the production of its own equivalent hormone once it senses that there's already some artificial hormones present in the body.

I believe that Ray Peat recommends a precursor hormone, pregnenolone(?), which is the pre-hormone used by the body to turn into testosterone and similiar sex-hormones, I think it's recommended as it can eb sued by the body to make natural hormones, so it may be a better option - on the other hand, a Dr Sahelian has stated that pregnenolone is very harmful except in very tiny doses.

In short, if one has a particular hormone-producing gland that is permanently harmed, then hormone-replacement is better than nothing, but, IMO, otherwise, it's best to just buy the raw gland in question from grassfed animals.

It comes from dairy, an inferior food, and is generally processed. Avoid it.

But Tyler, saying no to food because of your "I am on a diet" claim does not constitute caving into social pressures regarding food.  Hey, claiming religious fasting would work too.

How I handle this situation every time is to offer to bring food and drink to help out the host(ess).  Of course, it doesn't hurt that I am also gluten intolerant and claim "allergy" issues to avoid offending anyone.  And I am not afraid of some cooked meat and salads, which are usually always present unless your host is a veghead.  Perhaps I am fortunate that I have never felt pressure to eat obviously highly-processed junk food in social settings, whether they are made with organic sucanant, organic whole wheat or their conventional counterparts.  But then, everyone who knows me knows that I am independent and a bit eccentric anyway.  Lex's problems tell me that it ain't worth it to go off the wagon and pig out on foods that you are not used to consuming regularly, especially if you are a zero carber.  (IOW, I agree with Lex too.)

Sorry, I should have made clear that I do have to eat cooked when I get visits from acquaintances, the odd Christmas party, certain special occasions etc. Other than that, I'm able to get away with sashimi restaurants or not eating. BUt one has to be careful. I could probably get away with eating a wild hare carcass in a more wacky setting like California or Hawaii(judging from reports), but here in the UK, it's not a good idea to be too eccentric, in this regard.

I know that potatos are not paleo and need to be cooked but this may be worth 5 cents:

Nicola

I once read a newspaper interview of a pop-star who mentioned that he nearly died after eating nothing but raw potatoes for a whole month in order to cut down on costs, during a time before he became famous.

You just mentioned mineral-deficiency... What kind of minerals? Calcium/Magnesium? It's hard to realise why I became extremely mineral deficient on paleo diet...

I don't know either. I just came up with it as a possibility out of the blue. All I meant to say was that doctors are fallible human beings and make mistakes, but their business is health-related so they may know something you don't. A healthy diet can sort out a lot of things but it can't perform miracles such as surgery(you mentioned something about kidney-stones a while back, for example), and there are always going to be different issues for each individual, not all of which can be solved by diet.

I may hate doctors, but I have to admit that the whole weston-price notion of regrowing one's teeth didn't work for me, so I'm grateful that I had certain very painful holes in my teeth filled up by a dentist, pre-raw diet. And another doctor managed to perfectly fix my broken right leg when I was 4. Neither of these operations would have been fixable with just a raw animal food diet, so I'm sure that doctors have their uses, even though they failed to detect, let alone solve other issues.

You know, Yuri, you really should get a doctor to examine you. I agree that medicines/drugs are mostly useless, but, for all you know, you might be suffering from something specific(a mineral-deficiency or whatever) that the doctor might be able to diagnose. When I started on my search for better health, I was prepared to do anything at all to reach that goal, no matter how awkward, if I'd set myself any standards at the time(eg:- eat no "disgusting" foods like raw meat), I would be dead by now for sure. So try absolutely  everything, including the option of a doctor.

The trouble is that if we eat raw food at a gathering, our hosts will get annoyed at having to specially provide you with raw-friendly fare. Almost all such gatherings will involve foods which are highly-processed, to a large extent, and, as Lex said, cooked-food is so part of our culture that it looks rude if you sugest alternatives - let's face it, even vegetarians get looked down on for insisting on plant-food only at parties, it's only those who are highly allergic who are tolerated, in this regard.

Of course, my solution is much simpler, I just don't eat and claim to be "on a diet". That's usually considered OK.

So, I tend to agree with Lex.

Hi Geoff,

My wife will be on business / sight seeing in London for 2 weeks on October.  Any suggestions where she can get healthy, organic, wild meat and fruit?

I think she will hang out in West End a couple of days watching all the musicals she has time for.

The trouble is that I go to local semi-organic farmers' markets, where you sometimes have to set up an order for next week in order to get stuff. That said, PROVIDED she always turns up early at these markets, then she'll generally find decent food - if she arrives in the last couple of hours, she'll be lucky to find any decent meats.

Here's the London Farmer's Market association website:-

http://www.lfm.org.uk/
, where you can find a markets map showing all the various markets(Marylebone market is the largest one, one stall sells wild hare, you get things like wild mallard but not now, and you have to order things like raw lobster in advance). All these markets have their own homepage on the LFM site, with directions as to how to get there, most are held either on Saturday or Sunday every week(except Christmas/New Year), with a few smaller markets opening every Wednesday, instead. Many stalls sell initially grassfed but grain-finished meat, rather than 100% grassfed, so you'll have to ask - stick with raw lamb, if you have no idea re meat-quality.

Borough market is a great market(next to London Bridge station on the Northern Line-Bank branch of the Underground)
http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/borough-market.php
, but should only be visited at weekends(3rd saturday each month is when it's at its busiest). It's a total tourist trap and a rip-off so your wife avoid it like the plague unless you've allowed her to spend whatever she wants!

Covent Garden market(near covent garden tube-station)(I hear one can buy grey squirrel carcasses now from there:-
http://www.cgma.gov.uk/

Otherwise seek out ethnic markets like Brixton Market(you can get raw goat there):-

http://www.allinlondon.co.uk/brixton-market.php
Chinatown:-

There are also wild game butchers here and there and small fishmonger's in most areas(mainly the poorer areas). Just Google for them under "London UK", and you should find several. The fishmongers will be relatively cheap for some types of fish, the game butchers will be very expensive.

OK,I've made some strenuous efforts to change the raw foodism wikipedia page to one which at least isn't so rabidly anti-raw as before. Trouble is that now two people are trying to force me to remove the section devoted to studies on the toxins in cooked foods, while the 3rd, while more reasonable, is only interested in keeping 1 big paragraph of the studies. If anyone wants to help out, please go to the raw foodism wikipedia talk page, and give reasons(at the very bottom of the raw foodism talk page) as to why it should be kept. Make sure to keep objectivity and speak from a neutral point of view, they won't accept an argument stating that "rawists insist that the studies on toxins in cooked foods must be kept", they need extra arguments. You could also simply write that you agree with me! Here's the Raw Foodism Talk page:-

Well, all I can say is that merely including any preservatives at all, tends to induce similiar problems - raw, unprocessed  carbs are nowhere near as bad for me, in effect. But then, of course, I went into this diet with adrenal burnout, so this is hardly surprising.

Dinner was raw goat meat and some raw beef sirloin.
Then added a gloria banana, organic and wild from the mountain of antipolo.

I must get some raw goat meat from Brixton market, it's so delightful re taste, but a major hassle to get hold of as it's in south London, while I live in northwest London.

Yes, there is.
You can go into Microsoft Word (if you have it) and go to "Insert --->  Symbol"

This should pop up a box with a whole bunch of symbols. Find the one you're looking for and you can either insert it and then copy and paste it wherever you want, or it will also tell you a shortcut key, which you can use to make it whenever you want.

Thanks.

Well, I remain a bit sceptical re conspiracy-theories. I know that some of them have been proven true, in the past but the authentic ones are something like 1%, at most, of the total. And if there were real attempts to impose terminator-seeds or antibiotics on organic-raised cattle in the UK, there would have been an uproar in the UK from some extremely vehement, organised organic groups such as the Soil Association - as it is, whenever there's even the slightest criticism of the organic movement, they're always up in arms, getting articles published in the media etc.

My own view, I'm afraid, is that because the EU(+USA?), and the Codex Alimentarius, are now heavily cutting down on the amounts held in each pill of vitamin-/mineral-supplements, those vitamin-/mineral-supplements-sellers are now up in arms, and are using scaremongering tactics re other unrelated topics, to whip up sentiment against the FDA's regulations re supplements. When I used to take vast amounts of supplements in my raw vegan/fruitarian days etc., pre-rawpalaeo diet, I would constantly come across such unconvincing conspiracy-theories, so  remain a sceptic.

That said, I do agree that it's very important to be vigilant re the desire of bureaucracy to limit peoples' freedoms, so I rather admire the US tendency to initiate populist, grassroots actions  like the pro-raw dairy campaigns etc..

I wonder how to make the "o" with the two dots on an english keyboard. I suppose I would have to laboriously change the keyboard settings to a German version and then find out which key corresponds to it on the new keyboard-system to get it, but isn't there a quicker way?

Yes, I did throw out all table salt and stocked up on "designer" sea salt.  :) But I'll try other herbs and spices as well to see if I could reduce my salt dependancy eventually. Can one use an Indian spice, asafoetida? It tastes slightly salty. It's supposed to be good for digestion.

As long as it's not heated, that's fine. I hear it's normally used with heated  oil and ghee.

My gums bleed and recede. I do hope that they will become stronger eventually.

My own teeth developed problems primarily because of dairy-consumption which led to magnesium-deficiency. If you've been drinking dairy a lot, consider eating some pumpkin seeds regularly as they have a very high magnesium to calcium ratio. Other than removing dairy, adding in  raw organ-meats in general really helped my teeth. Though, it was a real problem trying to avoid chewing raw muscle-meats and the tougher organ-meats  prior to the point where my teeth finally recovered on this diet - my teeth would move very slightly out of their sockets with each chew, making me terrified that they would drop off, any time.
Other than magnesium, vitamin D, manganese and phosophorus are also required for good bones/teeth(everybody gets enough calcium in the diet, it's virtually impossible not to get enough calcium, and too easy to get too much if you consume dairy)

It should be OK to eat raw tomatoes and cucumbers. As far as I'm aware, they're the only fruits classed(wrongly) as vegetables.

It's good to know, because I've been salting my salads a lot, since they taste bland to me otherwise. I've also been making my own dressing out of dry salted fish, cold-pressed olive oil and lemon juice. Maybe I'll ease into low-salt eating gradually.

There's nothing wrong with using a little salt for just taste-reasons if you're a newbie to the diet - we all have to start somewhere, after all. I merely suggest that you look around for equally tasty alternatives(other people use raw ginger/garlic/onions/pepper/cayenne-pepper, among other raw spices).  You can still use the salt occasionally in small amounts, just make sure it's sea-salt or rock-salt, not iodised table-salt.

General Discussion / Re: Tongue

I find I can more easily bolt down larger pieces than when I was on cooked-diets. Anyway, I cut the pieces of tongue so that they fit into my mouth easily, so it's not an issue. With tongue, I'll just chew twice very quickly, and bolt it down.

When I first started the diet, I had extremely loose teeth(they'd been about to fall out, as a result of years of dairy-consumption, SAD diet, raw vegan diets etc.), so couldn't even chew raw, fresh tongue without experiencing some pain in my teeth, so my solution was to cut the tongue into much smaller pieces than I do now, not chew at all, just bolt them down - I also had to leave the tongue out(under plastic) outside, for a day or three, so that it would soften enough to be more manageable. My teeth became extremely strong aftera year or so on the diet, so that the above methods were no longer necessary.

*Some newbies prefer to use alternative methods such as pulverising foods like liver into a liquid mush etc. using food-mixers/blenders etc. I suppose some such products might even be able to handle raw tongue?*

Is "high meat" - spoiled meat?

Is it O.K. to eat surströmming on this diet? It is rotten herring that I really like. It's not cooked, but it's salted. Are salted things OK?

Both Aajonus and Palaeodieters frown on the use of salt, though some RPDers have recently claimed that salt is needed since most RPDers do not usually have access to raw  blood which contains natural salts in it. I don't suppose the occasional use of salt is too bad, but I wouldn't advise making salt a frequent part of your diet. I use salt perhaps once or twice a year with my raw meats.
