I have a different philosophy with ground beef.
Personally, I don't like ground beef.
I do serve my kids cooked ground beef but I grind it at the market and serve it the same day.
I experimented with ground beef a la french steak tar tar and I only ate it freshly ground.

My take on ground beef is you buy whole beef and keep it in your ref.  When you want to eat ground beef, you grind it fresh in your grinder.

I have this thing against grinding it and exposing all of it in the air for a long time.

Now meat locked in from a whole slab is different.

You may want to hear the experience of other ground beef eaters.  I personally dislike ground beef.  I like my beef whole and I slice on demand.

Thanks for your advice GoodSamaritan, I got ground beef because it's the only recipe I know.   l)  Will start whole beef.

Thanks, Good Samaritan.  Does it still turn a little brown?  Mine is ground beef.

Sorry for what might be stupid questions.  I still haven't gotten my book yet.  I got freshly ground organic grass fed beef yesterday and ate some and stored the rest in tupperware in the fridge.  It's slightly brown and I'm wondering if it's still okay to eat and continue to eat tomorrow.  How long can I keep it in the fridge and when do I know if it's gone bad?  Thank you!

Thanks for the info, Dan.   :)

Okay, thanks everyone.  I'm just freaking out because it was my first time.  I'll do some more research and get grassfed beef.  I have to say, though - it was delicious and filling!   ;D

take a little while and read the forum. be patient with yourself.
whole foods does sell some grass fed meat (beef or lamb usually) but there are many other outlets, both online and local. when ruminant animals are grass fed and grass finished, they are natural and HEALTHY.

Okay, thanks Dshohei.  I'm reading the forum.  I'll look for the grass fed next time at Whole Foods.  (But I am assuming that I am not going to get sick tonight and I have not contracted any parasites?  And if I have, how will I know?  Sorry - this is my first time so I am very nervous about it!)

Its absolutely fine just about everyone here does it everyday. But was it grassfed beef?

Unfortunately not.  Whole Foods doesn't usually offer it.  But it was organic - is that okay?  Why is grassfed safer?

How/where do you buy your meat, and do you buy new meat constantly so that it will be fresh?  As long as it's all pink, does that mean it's fresh?

Raw meat doesn't seem to stress most people's kidneys out.
Absolutely. It's a step in the right direction for your health so even if it's small steps it's beneficial. Common consensus around here is to avoid cooked meats on days when you eat raw meat. You could alternate days of cooked & raw, etc. but I personally wouldn't mix the two on the same day.
Eating quality food is the best way to avoid getting sick.
You can buy the meat the day it comes in but it's not neccesary.
There's debate here on the damaging effects of freezing the meat. I'm doing fine on pre-frozen meats as are a number of members here on the forum. Storing in the fridge is perfectly fine as well.
I defrost the meat by leaving it on my counter overnight (or sticking it outside in the sun if I forgot to defrost something and need to hasten things).
No problem. Definitely read up in the newbie section as well as general discussion, those two seem to have the most pertinent questions/answers for someone starting out. :)

Whoops, I misread your post the other night, Dan - I thought you had written that you do well on "frozen meat."  I am wondering though - how do you know if your raw meat is good?  I ate mine because I had just bought it and it was all pink.

And what do you think about the 14 day freezing rule to kill all the parasites?

I recommend reading up on the past threads in this forum and search here and elsewhere on the hygiene hypothesis, helminthic therapy, mutualism, symbionts, commensals, probiotics, fermented meats (salami, sausage, high meat, etc.), ....

Thank you, I'm searching through the threads now.  But can anyone assuage my fears right now and tell me that what I did - eating raw beef without freezing it for 14 days first - was okay?

Hi, I haven't gotten "The Primal Diet" yet in the mail so I'm not familiar with the basics.

I got some raw ground chuck from Whole Foods today, came home and immediately ate some (followed a beef tartare recipe).  It was very pink and seemed fresh.  BTW, it tasted great!

After I finished eating it I read that you're supposed to freeze raw meat for 14 days to kill the parasites!  I kind of freaked out and took 2 TBSP of raw apple cider vinegar in some water to clean myself out.  Then my stomach started rumbling and felt upset - I'm not sure if it's because of the vinegar.

If you DON'T have to freeze for 14 days, what's the protocol?  How do you know if the meat you're buying is fresh enough?  Can you keep it in the fridge for a few days while you eat it?  What do you guys here normally do?  Thanks.

Thanks so much, djr!  Going grocery shopping tomorrow and will have some raw meat for the first time in my life!

Hi, I'm very new - I literally just found out about this diet today.  I've been reading Amazon reviews of The Primal Diet and I'm going to order it.   In the meantime I'd like to start eating some raw meat immediately and have some questions.

1) I'm a protein type with an autoimmune disease called Lupus that has affected my kidneys in the past.  (I'm also hypoglycemic believe I have adrenal fatigue.)  I've heard that the best diet for the kidneys is a vegetarian diet but I feel HORRIBLE when I go without meat.  From reading some of the posts here, I am guessing raw meat is NOT bad for the kidneys and will actually improve their function?

2) Can I start out slowly, like have raw beef once a day or a couple times a week?  Is it detrimental to have cooked meats on the same day?  Or do I need to jump in and eat everything raw?

3) How do I avoid getting sick from raw meat?  I live near a Whole Foods that sells organic free range beef - would I have to get it on the day the beef comes in? (though they never tell me the best day - they always say everyday is the best day).  Do I have to eat it right away, or can I store it in the fridge/freezer?  If so what is the proper way to defrost?

Sorry about all these newbie questions.  I will do more research on these threads but am really worn out today.  Many thanks!
