Joy: rawzi can correct me if she thinks im wrong, but peoples' genes tell their bodies whether or not to turn carbs in to fat. If you are prone to weight gain then id guess fruitarianism would inflate you like a balloon. But if youre like me, you can eat carbs all day every day without gaining anything (except disease!).

So fruitarianism is not always responsible for over-skinniness.

Their fruit is mostly ripe and they don't cook it. It has simple sugars. They don't usually eat anything else. Many get quite thin. Did you try it? I ate only fruit for a number of months. I did lose weight. Never more than ten pounds weight loss in total from it, start to finish each time.  I hear if done long enough they gain muscle from it? I don't feel it's for me, and I cannot feel good about recommending it. I stopped; because it felt like time to stop.

Back in the days while I thought fruitarianism was the ideal, I tried several times to do it. I never succeeded in doing it for even one week. I got sick of the sweetness of fruits even though I loved/love fruits in general.

...   the over-skinniness of fruitarianism.

What is the reason for the over-skinniness of fruitarians? If they overeat sweet fruit, won't all those sugars in the sweet fruit put fat on them?

Exercise / Bodybuilding / strength increase = muscle increase?
« on: May 12, 2012, 02:05:29 pm »
I have been doing weight lifting for months now, 20-30 minutes at a time, about 2 hours a week. I utilize 11 weight-lifting machines at a local gym.
I think my strength has increased because I am making steady gradual progress in lifting heavier weight with every weight-lifting machine.     So does that mean I have put on some muscle? I cannot tell just by looking at myself.  My scale weight remains the same. I do not do measurements because measurements are hard to do and are inconsistent.

I'm sorry Joy. It's a bummer right? I read first about this in a book about chickens and eggs and I was flabbergasted.

The egg comes out of the chicken with a natural coating called the bloom. It takes a couple of weeks for the chicken to lay enough eggs to start sitting so this is quite an amazing protectant. That's why you want to try to get your eggs unwashed if you can - so that the bloom is intact. Your eggs will stay so much fresher. But industry can't let "unclean" eggs maybe with some poopies on them or dirt go to market (heaven forbid!) so they powerwash the eggs. The only problem is now the bloom is gone and the eggs will go bad faster so what do they do? They spray stuff on them to preserve them. If you are really lucky it will be harmless, but the big producers spray super nasty oils derived from petroleum on the eggs. What they spray on the eggs "for transport" does not have to be listed in the ingredients because it has nothing to do with the farming of the eggs - only with transport. Disgusting huh? Many small farmers wash their eggs but don't put anything back on the eggs to preserve them so these eggs will last a shorter time - that's why you have to refrigerate them. If the bloom is still on it's best to keep your eggs on the counter. A refrigerated egg tastes totally different than a non-refrigerated one to me.

Thank you Dorothy. It is good to have you around.

I have not yet developed a strong taste for raw egg yoke at this stage of my RP diet.  How do you eat your raw eggs?

306
The worst part of eating a store-bought egg is the nasty stuff they put on the egg to preserve it - so I definitely wouldn't eat the egg whites of store-bought eggs as that is a protective layer that would absorb the toxins before the yolk.

You dropped another bomb! Eggs have chemicals put on them!? You think even "organic eggs" sold at grocers have been processed this way?

307
Dorothy, you are an active energetic woman! You are running a zoo of small animals (including bugs).

Maybe one day you will write a book, to educate people about super nutrition and also to share your fun expereince of supplying your own foods from your pet animals and garden.

That being said though --- Joy --- the egg is a superior food to just about anything you can find in a regular supermarket - even the inferior eggs they have there.

Do you mean you think even supermarket organic eggs are superior in nutrition?

99.9 percent of all organic pumpkin seeds are now from China, and won't sprout.  At least here in Ca.  I did get some from Sunfood that are grown in Europe.  I have been using these for years.  A totally different seed, one that grows hulless, that is used throughout Europe for Prostrate health etc.  They definitely sprout, and I soak those for about eight hours, trying to rinse and resoak at four hours.  I think the anti-nutrients, some come off with soaking, some are transformed or broken down with sprouting, can get reabsorbed with the soak water....   Chinese seeds probably are dead due to using heat to aid in getting off the hull.  I think they are nasty tasting, unless one masks their flavor with herbs and salt etc...
If seeds from China are dead, then I suppose they cannot claim the seeds are "raw" on the package.

About 3 hours seems to work nicely for me.... but even if I forget about them I don't worry about the fermentation. I work hard to ferment so many things! Some people soak wheatberries way past what's necessary and try to ferment the water and then drink it - it's called rejuvelac.

I've never felt even a little bad from soaking pumpkin seeds overnight, rinsing them in the morning and dehydrating them and I've done that more times than I could ever count. There are lots of things that don't sit well with me - so it's not like I have an iron stomach either.

I tend to soak most of my seeds way past the time that is said is necessary because it's so much easier just to leave them all overnight and deal with them all in the morning. It works out fine for me for every different kind of nut and seed that I've tried - which I think might be everyone in creation.  ;)

Thanks.  The example of wheatberries make sense. I will conclude that "fermented" pumpkin seeds are good then.

jissica, thank you for your reply....So modern eggs are not that nutritious :(   ... I grew up hearing always that eggs are most nutritious...

GS, is Paradise in Phillipines or is it just that you are very resourceful in finding out the best primitive food items in Phillipines?  ;)  You are always reporting your wonderful Paleo diet food choices that make the rest of us envious... :(

Thanks for responses.

I was just wondering if "fermentation" acutally makes pumpkin seeds more nutritious. But if molds are involved...that is another matter... On the other hand, I doubt molds will grow within one day on pumpkin seeds though.

When I soak pumpkin seeds, I have to remember to change soaking water in about 10 hours. If I forget and let the same pot of water soaking pumpkin seeds for a whole day, the water will have a kind of "fermentation" smell and so do the pumpkin seeds, especially as the weather gets warmer.  The "fermented" taste remains with pumpkin seeds even after they have been dehydrated.  I do not dislike the fermented taste.

My question is: Is this harmful to health?

313

Let's analyze the very best non-soy (soy bad for chickens) organic feed I was able to find for my chickens. It's only 3 grains and the grains are ground up already so that the nutrients are compromised over time - especially the fats. The protein is a low-percentage (never over 30%) and it comes from fish but those fish are processed at very high heat and dehydrated. There is dried alfalfa for greens, a little kelp and synthetic vitamins.

So how nutritious are the "organic eggs" sold at grocers?  How does an "organic egg" compare with 100% grass fed beef nutritionally?

After all, an egg contains a whole chicken...

314
Do they taste different?

I have never seen fertile eggs in grocers, not even in Whole Foods. Do small farmers sell fertile eggs?

315
as long as i am eating the few types of carbs that work for me, it doesn't see to matter for me if i go cold turkey with or without carbs for periods of time.  i don't know why though, this doesn't seem to be the experience of others.

Maybe these few types of carb you eat have few allergens?  What are these few types of carb?

Right, Cordain is talking about saturated fat under 15%, not total fat of diet.

"Advanced glycation end products (AGEs), also known
as glycotoxins, are a diverse group of highly oxidant
compounds with pathogenic significance in diabetes
and in several other chronic diseases. AGEs are
created through a nonenzymatic reaction between reducing
sugars and free amino groups of proteins, lipids, or
nucleic acids
."

Maybe that is the reason coke/coffee/lead contains little AGEs...because they contain little protein/sugar/lipids.

It is more concentrated a nutrient than protein or carbs, and with more complex nutrients within it. Raw marrow, for example, has stem-cells in it.

Does raw animal fat contain many vitamins and minerals? And what is the benefit of stem-cells?

Raw animal fat is, however, the healthiest type of food to eat.

So cooked animal fat is out. But why is raw animal fat the healthiest? What nutrients does it have?

You have indeed been eating a lot of cheese and other dairy, so that is a possible culprit and an elimination test does make sense. What are you going to replace it with, marrow, suet, back fat, tongue, egg yolks, ...?

Will someone summarize for me the reason there is so much emphasis on raw animal fat in this forum? In Cordain's latest book, it appears he cautions against too much animal fat (less than 15% of diet), implying it may lead to heart problems etc..

Egg white as  shampoo and then egg yolk as conditioner...Your hair will shine.

However, u will smell like an egg for a long while afterwards. The smell evaporates as the hair dries up. I do not know why.

Thanks for your testimonial. That is one more testimonial for RP diet

I started to get pains in the left of my stomach (probably pancreas due to all fruits)

Why would raw fruit hurt pancreas?

Yes, I'm thinking about getting dehydrator to cure muscle meat. I tried raw lamb liver today. Sliced it on a plate, added some salt and pepper. That was great. Actually liver tastes strongly even without any spices.

I didn't notice organ meats in your diet, could it be another cause of low energy levels?

I use my dehydrator all the time. It is a great instrument. At this stage I still cannot stomach any raw animal flesh without warming it up first.

I had several pounds of organs in the past 3 months. I love liver. It is just that  I was lazy about getting organs from Slankers and also I love my minced beef dish so much...My thought was that I had not touched beef for years so it wouldn't hurt if  I should indulge in beef for a few months...  When I return to U.S. from Taiwan in late August I will strive for a more balanced RP diet.  I am not giving it up yet...I trust the testimonials given by the members of this RP forum...because a good number of them had tried other healing diets and they all testify to RP diet....

Thanks to all for advice.

I had one big raw fruit/salad meal about once every three weeks in the past four months, usually on the occasion of buffet socials. I did not experience digestive problems. Maybe my carb digestive enzymes/bacteria have never  retired?

The reason I am thinking of "going cold turkey" to high-raw-fruit is that I hope to eat raw animal flesh as much as possible until the moment I leave U.S. (the land of bountifulness) and fly to Taiwan, where I do not expect to be able to eat raw quality animal flesh for a couple of weeks (I have to do research on animal food there and I will have a string of socials and short trips to different cities...)

Thanks to all who gave me some food for thought. It comforts me that you obviously believe eating raw animal flesh is not harmful, based on your own experience I trust. Personal experiences/testimonials are very valuable in my view, since so many "experts" proclaim differing theories.

I may quiz this doctor in some future time when I put all my thoughths together. He is an expert on fasting and whole raw vegan food diet and claims to have helped 10000+ patients recover from diseases at his retreat/hospital. I do benefit very much from his advice on fasting.

One thing he advises about fasting is that one should eat very-high-fat meals on the day prior to fasting, which will direct (give a hint to) the body to consume body fat as the fast starts--so ketones are produced early and hunger is minimized. I have found this advice very useful. So eating fat does give a hint to the body to consume body fat....That is why I cannot totally dismiss his advice that eating animal protein "directs/gives a hint to" one's body to consume animal protein (which includes human muscles).

On the other hand, my own personal experience is: During my 3 months of high-animal-flesh diet, I put on some new musles...But this doctor is talking about AGING caused by high-turning-over of tissue/muscles.
