Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Strange side-effect of eating lamb
« on: March 27, 2011, 03:52:40 pm »
My urine smells like lamb(!) when I consume 200-300 grams of lamb meat every day. Anybody else notice this? Is this a sign of a problem?

Health / Depression
« on: January 26, 2011, 02:28:53 am »
I have found and read all existing forum posts on the subject. I am starting a new topic to get the new/current opinions and experiences from forum members.

I have had a mild form of depression for a long time - it was a fact of daily life and I was able to be functional on day-to-day basis. The depression has gotten worse in the last few months, to the point where I am beginning to consider taking medication for it. Being "out of it" makes it very difficult to stay on a diet, avoid stress, make lifestyle changes, etc. I would like to hear the suggestions and/or experiences of those who were able to alleviate depressive symptoms through RPD. Thanks.

General Discussion / Dried cod roe
« on: December 29, 2010, 10:31:52 am »
I have a source of fresh cod roe. It is sold still in its own "bag". I've tried eating it raw and really disliked the taste. I suspect that dried roe would be delicious! I've seen dried roe in shops but it's both expensive and heavily salted. I wonder if it's possible to dry a delicate product like this without the use of salt. I've made dried fish as a kid - the fish is cured in salt for 5-7 days before drying. I think the same process would work for roe, but I want to avoid the salt. Any suggestions?

Hot Topics / Possible high-meat poisoning/questions
« on: December 26, 2010, 12:11:57 am »
This is a brief description of my first time eating high-meat. I've made two batches:

a) Made from grass-fed beef, half of which was previous frozen and the other half was dry-aged on the refrigerator shelf. This meat did not ferment very-well in the fridge, so I left the jars opened on the counter for a few days and that seemed to get the process going. I aired the jars every day for 30 days and occassionally left them on the counter overnight.

b) Made from grass-fed lamb, never frozen. About 15 days old. Followed the same preparation process as above.

So on day 30 I decided to try it. The meat was foul smelling and moldy on the surface, but inside it was appetizingly red and somewhat dry. Is it normal for high meat to look like this? Beef tasted ok and the lamb was great! Briefly after eating it I felt a faint improvement in my alertness and felt very peaceful. Could've been my imagination though.

Toward the end of the day I felt very fatigued and the early evening I was having flu-like symptoms. I had fever, felt very disoriented and nauseous. I've had similar symptoms before when I had a serious food poisoning from a restaurant meal. The symptoms resolved on their own by about midnight and I felt good again.

I think the problem may have been due to the beef having been frozen and dried previously. Any thoughts? I think I'm going to ditch the beef and try eating the lamb in two weeks.

Finally, just something I've been pondering for a while: are the positive effects of high meats due to the improvement of gut flora, or are people just getting high from the toxins created by the bacteria?

THanks!

Exercise / Bodybuilding / Help me get back into exercising
« on: December 25, 2010, 11:55:13 pm »
Some background: adventure races, century bike rides, bike touring, 5/10k races, rock-climbing, mountaineering. In the past, all of my exercise was aimed at improving performance in the above activities. Most recent exercise regimen consisted of olympic weight lifting 3-4 times a week, occassional bike rides, and walking. Due to school/work commitments and traveling, I haven't exercised since July 2010. I have never been sedentary for this long. I'm looking for some tips on how to ease back into exercise given my goals and the fact that I'm eating RZC. Current goals are to build muscle mass and improve general health and fitness. Planning to eventually lift heavy weights 2-3 times/week, do a Crossfit style workout once a week, and maybe sprint or do a trail run once a week. Basically, looking for advice from people who resumed exercising while eating zero or low-carb. Thanks!

Welcoming Committee / Hello from NJ
« on: December 25, 2010, 10:51:19 pm »
Hello everyone,

My name is Dima. I am 29/m living in NJ. I went cooked paleo about two years ago and saw great benefits - was able to get off my GERD meds. I switched to cooked ZC sometime this year; saw great results in the beginning, but it quickly became a struggle. I naturally gravitated to RZC in the recent weeks and the information from this forum was most helpful! Transitioning to raw meats, fish, organs was surprisingly easy. My main goals are to heal mild depression, anxiety, ADD and the chronic fatigue which I've had for most of my life.  All the positive lifestyle changes I've done in the recent years (diet, exercise, etc) have yet to yield any positive results with the above problems. I'm also curious to see what my athletic performance will be on RZC.

Cheers,

Dima
