Your vegan friend can experiment by adding some raw meat in his diet.
Just try 100 grams of raw meat a day then ask how that feels.

Vegans made a video on this:

Simply Raw - Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days(2008).
"http://   www   .megavideo.com/?v=JQLPR5YZ"

Edit: hmm, that link must be different when seen from other countries... I actually see the movie in that link.

Well, you can always google it anyway.

That's T2 diabetes?  It only opened to a porn site here, so I took off the last few figures in my response.  Could you go back in there and modify the link not to do that?

They took some people with T1, T2 and most of them were cured in 30 days (that the summary). The diet was high carb, high fiber, low protein.

This is the movie you are looking for:

Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days is an independent documentary film that chronicles six Americans with 'incurable' diabetes switching their diet and getting off insulin.

The film follows each participant's remarkable journey and captures the medical, physical, and emotional transformations brought on by this diet and lifestyle change. We witness moments of struggle, support, and hope as what is revealed, with startling clarity, is that diet can reverse diabetes* and change lives.

Additional wisdom is provided by Morgan Spurlock, Woody Harrelson, Anthony Robbins, Rev. Michael Beckwith, David Wolfe and Doctors Fred Bisci, Joel Fuhrman, and Gabriel Cousens.

I have an 18 year old daughter who developed Type 1 diabetes when she was 12. For 6 years I have continuously searched for a cure or even a way to tightly control her blood sugar levels to avoid complications. We (I joined her for suport) ate a raw vegan diet for about 2 years. We tried Dr. Cousin's version as well as other versions recommended by leaders in the raw vegan community. We attended a lecture by David Wolfe to watch Dr. Cousens' video on reversing diabetes in 30 days. I later called the Tree of Life Rejuvination Center (where I believe the study took place) and was told that their program could reduce the level of insulin needed for a Type 1, but could not cure Type 1. Things we experienced while on a raw vegan diet were this: low energy that never got better, reduced strength, a constant feeling of hunger and lack of satiety no matter how much we ate, vitamin and mineral deficiencies determined by blood tests, teeth demineralization, and several other problems. In 6 years of research I have been able to come up with a man that reportedly cured T1 using Vitalzyme, one using Protocel, and at least several who were able to go off insulin (but not actually cure TP1, as in now the pancreas works fine) eating the Homo Optimus Diet. We have found the best solution is to eat the Homo Optimus Diet with ratios of (1:2.5-3.5:0.5-0.8)(P:F:C) and eat as much of it raw as possible. (We've had amazing experiences with the healing power of raw grassfed liver and kidney.) This can be done in conjunction with Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. Dr. Bernstein developed diabetes in 1946 at the age of twelve (he's now 76 years old) and has developed a program that can keep blood sugars within the normal range at all times, which eliminates the dreaded complications.

Same here. You sound like one of the people, like me, whose physiology may be geared more toward meat eating than veganism. The following isn't scientific, but I've noticed the following correlations between physiology and hunting history among Eurasians, particularly Europeans. Do you or your daughter have any of the following:

* red hair or red-haired close relatives (also other light shades like auburn and blonde; if of European ancestry)
* green/hazel eyes or green-eyed close relatives (also other light shades like blue, grey, yellow/amber--Tyler said that even black Africans can have their eyes turn from brown to yellow/amber on a primal diet)
* close male relatives with red/green color blindness
* a genealogy that includes many ancestors from peoples that only adopted intensive crop agriculture relatively recently, historically speaking, or not at all (ex: Native Americans, Celts and the peoples the Celts conquered and intermingled with, Scandinavians, Native Siberians, Native Steppes peoples, and other hunter gatherer and pastoralist peoples)?
* pale/fair skin (if of European ancestry)
* somewhat longer-than-avg canine teeth (like Bob Marley's: )
* family history of addiction to alcohol, refined white drugs, or carby foods (pizza, pasta, mac & cheese, cookies, pies, candy, ice cream, soda pop, milk, sub sandwiches, corn dogs, etc.) in the broader family
* family history of more-than-avg acne, dental problems, MS, connective tissue disorders, diabetes (type 1, type 2 or gestational), cancer or other diseases/disorders of civilization

This does sound like you have a more carnivorous than vegan physiology if you're doing well on Homo Optimus and organs. My cousin's children are type 1 diabetics who are doing much better since following one of Dr. Bernstein's books.

Very interesting observations and comments on the issue of physiology and how ancestry is connected to the proper diet. My daughter is strawberry blonde with very pale skin (doesn't tan at all, just gets pink), and blue eyes. Her dad is a redhead of Celtic ancestry with the same kind of skin. I have blonde hair and blue eyes, but I do tan. My ancestry is mostly German and we do have several redheads in the extended family.

For raw, I remembered one other therapy for Type 1 diabetics that looks promising. Google: Holistic Diabetes Treatment by Walter Last. We tried this with my daughter a few years ago. After a week she said she was too miserable and didn't want to continue. She now says she's willing to give it another try, because we do remember that it very quickly reduced her insulin resistance. It's worth looking into.

I cured myself of type 2 diabetes a couple years back with a raw vegan diet, but the diet was bad for me in other ways. It took about 60 days to get off all my meds except half a blood pressure pill, and I was taking a lot of meds. I am now a raw meat eater of the last year and a half, and my blood sugar tests, including my Hemoglobin A1C are all perfect and remain so. I have remained grain free but not refined sugar free over the last 18 months. I am now committed to a raw primal lifestyle and am hoping for further health gains, as I think my raw veganism, and my sugar indulgences of the past have exacerbated my adrenal conditions. They certainly have slowed my recovery if nothing else.
