Title: Raw Meat Digestion Question
Post by: Haida on April 03, 2009, 10:07:09 am
I have heard that cooked meat takes up to 24hours to fully digest. Does anyone here know the estimeted digestion time for raw meat? Also how long do you usually wait after eating a meat meal to eat veggies or fruit?

I think you are talking about "transit" time rather than digestion time.  Generally most food has been broken down and the major components absorbed within 3 -4 hours.    If you will monitor your blood glucose after eating you will find that it starts rising as you eat and will continue to slowly rise for 2 - 3 hours where it reaches a peak and then starts to decline.  This will happen regardless of whether the food is cooked or not.  The over all speed of the rise as well as the peak reached will be dependent on Glycemic index of the food.  Generally if its mostly carbs it is digested faster, maybe an hour or so total, but if it is mostly fat and protein then 3 hours is more the norm.

Total transit time for the waste products resulting from eating a meal may take anywhere from 4 to 6 hours all the way up to 24 hours or more depending on the health of the digestive tract, how often food is consumed, and how irritating the food is to the walls of the intestins and bowel.

As an example, if a person eats white bread it will digest very quickly causing a rapid spike in blood glucose, but the waste products create a sticky mass that moves very slowly through the intestins and bowl and may not be expelled for several days.  On the other hand, if a lactose intollerant person eats dairy along with their meal, the body will react strongly and push the whole mass of food eaten with the dairy products through the digestive system and expel it within 3 or 4 hours (with much gas and cramping I might add).

Someone eating raw meat and fat will have very small stools as there is little waste.  With little bulk there may be no urge to defecate and expel the waste products until sufficient mass builds up in the colon which could take 2 or 3 days.  Unlike the white bread scenario however, there is no feeling of constipation as the problem is just a lack of enough mass to trigger a bowel movement rather than a sluggish sticky mess that is difficult to push through.

As you can see there really is no simple answer to the question of total "transit" time, but you can monitor "digestion" speed yourself just by tracking your blood glucose curve after eating your meals.

Hope this helps,

Lex

As far as the way I feel with raw meat vs cooked meat, I feel after 1 hour my raw meat is digested, cooked meat may take 3 to 4 or more... nowadays I find thoroughly cooked meat vile... I can handle rare meats...

Some cooked meat is easier to digest like boiled duck embryos / balut - I just had some this evening... been a long night and I was on the road and hungry... got home really late and had raw eggs to hopefully offset the cooked food I ate.

GS, I thought you said you hated balut(?) What did these embryo-containing eggs taste like? I'm curious as I've never had fertilised eggs before.

Fertilized eggs are available at whole foods market. I will probably buy some to try. Is there a notable difference in how they look or taste compared to regular eggs?

speaking of fertilized eggs, do you all prefer eating fertilized eggs? I have heard that they are more nutritious.

Blessed!

Most of us, myself included, don't know how to even get hold of fertilised, raw eggs. Very few farms in the West specialise in fertilised eggs.

That's funny.  I also use raw eggs to help offset the negative effects of cooked meat.

What I really wanted to know is how long after eating a mono meat meal do you wait before eating fruits or vegetables?

Depends on the fruit/veggie.  Yesterday I ate some avocado, bell pepper, and onions with my beef.  But if you're talking about something like a strawberry or orange, then I usually wait at least a couple hours.  Not so much out of principle, I'm just not hungry.  But you should probably have a good hour of separation between heavy meats and sweets or any starchy substance.  Experiment.  See what works for you.

Haha I saw the term mono meat, thought of you Haida, and there you are!  I hadn't seen you here before, but then I've been busy.  Welcome!

Hi Tyler,

I like cooked Balut.  I'm just scared of raw live balut.  I mean crack open a live forming duckling and have it still squiggling in your mouth?  ooooohhhh...

Our unfertilized supermarket eggs vs fertilized eggs, the fertilized eggs taste a whole lot better, not slimy like the supermarket eggs.

cooked balut, everyone likes cooked balut, you open a basket in a picnic and it is the first to be consumed... always.

When you think about it, GS, most RAFers are eating animals live at some stage. For example, I always eat my raw oysters and raw mussels live.

Yes, I eat my oysters alive and mussels alive too... my kids as well... but there is something about a live duckling and possibly moving duckling that makes me grossed out about it.  I've seen koreans eat live octopus... I think I'll kill it first.  I agree, it is social conditioning.

Thanks for all your input. Yesterday I gave myself freedom to eat what i feel like; I tend to over-think. From now I will give myself freedom to not over-analyze. I should put that in a positive statement though....ah...I give myself the freedom to act on instinct. That should work. I am learning to de-program myself. Act on instincts. Ha, tonight while preparing for dinner I decided to go without the cutlery. Just hands and mouth. That was instincts, it felt good.

Good for you. From my experience the first people to fail on restrictive diets like these are those that over analyze and burn themselves out. Slow and steady wins the race.

how does it offset it?  is it the whole egg or just the yolk?  if it is the whole egg what about the avidin?
