It seems marriage is so un-palaeolithic, but essential in a settled, agricultural society.

The article also mentions a claim that the Neanderthals died out as a result of getting venereal diseases from mating with early modern humans.

This seems likely. Owning land makes you think about your claims on other people's lives.
