My comments:

- The giant silicon trees explanation is convincing.

- I ignore the mention of "flat earth"... seems the author is making a tongue in cheek joke.

- Giant quarries are convincing.  The engineer in me agrees.

- Old nuclear wars, yes.  But old nuclear war in 1816?  That is new, I will have to look into that. What I found https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_Without_a_Summer

- Some volcanoes are filled with radioactive wastes?  Hmmm... that deserves further study.
