I have not observed humans to be monogamous.

Perhaps as other qualities such as cunning and tactical skills became more important for human survival. Sexual selection became based more heavily on mental analysis began to become more important than brute penis bone force...and so the love bone eventually lost its relevance, and eroded away....around the time when a powerful brain became a much large turn on to the tribal female than a bone in the cock.
