Title: Paleo Fingernails?
Post by: goodsamaritan on May 06, 2009, 05:34:15 am
I'm wondering how paleo people cut their fingernails, did they ever? I cut mine with a nail clipper and keep it short.

I'm sure that Palaeo peoples constantly rubbed/stubbed their toes and fingers against rocks, thus wearing out the nails naturally. That's partially what I do - I also bite my nails from time to time. NO need for scissors.

Bet they did what I do - trim with a sharp knife. Flint or obsidian knives are sharper than a surgeon's scalpel.

I don't believe that as palaeo peoples wouldn't have been able to shave with flints and the like.

Shaving has to be neolithic. Probably invented by trolls.

I think they would have allowed sabre toothed gophers to gnaw them.

Slightly more helpful comment ;) - I have to cut and file my fingernails for my job. The filing seems to help them stay strong - maybe it simulates the abrasion which a paleo person would have had and stimulates growth.

My fingernails have always been healthy and continue to be healthy on this diet. I don't pay enough attention to say for sure but I believe they are growing a bit faster than before. I cut them and file them, while keeping my thumb and four nails on my right hand longer than the rest for playing classical guitar. They never break or chip. One time I even bent back my longer thumbnail doing a judo throw right in the middle of the nail and it bled for a little while and everyone said it would fall off eventually and it didn't. The bent part you could see because there was dried blood under it, and it grew out and never fell off.

I do the same for guitar. I didn't really pay much attention, but I did notice a month ago that the nails on my right hand seemed stronger than a year or two ago. But it's hard to say since I didn't 'measure' their strength or anything.
