Title: Lost vegetation and animal life due to the Great Flood
Post by: goodsamaritan on May 06, 2009, 05:45:43 am
My studies of ancient history point to the Great Flood of ~4000 BC to be the great big archeological wipe out that leaves us guessing as to what Paleo life was all about.
Maybe those paleo cave painters and other existing paleo records are just paleo men of the very high altitudes... but what about those big majority of paleo life that got submerged underwater?
I'm thinking if with our experimentations, it is the big animals that have lots of fat are the ones that are really health giving, then maybe the lost vegetation and lost animal life due to the great world wide flood that permanently raised the sea levels may have dissolved the fossil records of what should have been staple human food.
I'm opening this thread to solicit opinions and research as to what might have been lost.
I'm speculating humans may have had staple foods that were easy and convenient to eat that provided HIGH FAT - LOW CARB, which seems pretty much the most health giving kind of raw paleo diet variant.
Maybe woolly mammoths and other fatty big game were staple foods, but most of it now under the oceans.

THe idea of the flood is supposed to come from the Black Sea becoming flooded at one point. Since, in those days "the world" consisted merely of the immediate region people lived in, that's how the tale of the flood came about.

The great flood was a worldwide catastrophe told all around the world by people all around the world. Each point on earth had his own "Noah" great flood survivors and stories.

A lot of similar tales are told by people from around the world, does that make them true?

Comparative studies worldwide point to the flood stories all happening around 4000 BC. The scientists, physicists, the archeologists, the historians, the mythologists, astronomers now collaborating because of advanced information technology... find out that persistent flood myths all told at the same time by various cultures not in touch with each other around the world --- are most likely true.

in my class on the archeology of south asia taught by mark kenoyer (1 of the leading indus valley archeologists in the world) i learned that there's evidence (fossil record) of rice cultivation in a low valley area surrounded by high mountains near what nowadays are pakistan & afghanistan at about 8,000 bce (i.e. about 10,00 years before present)
{sorry, don't have the source on hand at the moment}

This topic re the various deluge myths, while interesting, really doesn't belong to the the general discussions thread, IMO. It should go to the off-topic forum, as it's not directly related to diet. Before doing that, here is a standard critique of the various great flood myths from wikipedia:-
"Deluge myth From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Hypotheses of origin of flood myths The publication of The First Fossil Hunters by Adrienne Mayor, followed by Fossil Legends of the First Americans, have caused the hypothesis that flood stories have been inspired by ancient observations of fossil seashells and fish inland and on mountains to gain ground. Though the Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, and Chinese all commented in ancient writings about seashells and/or impressions of fish that they found inland and/or in the mountains, it was no less than Leonardo da Vinci who postulated that an immediate deluge could not have caused the layered and neatly ordered strata he found in the Italian Apennines. The Greeks hypothesized that the earth had been covered by water several times, and noted the seashells and fish fossils that they found on mountain tops as the evidence for this belief. Native Americans also expressed this belief to early Europeans, though they had not written these ideas down previously.[citation needed]
Some geologists believe that quite dramatic, greater than normal flooding of rivers in the distant past might have influenced the myths. One of the latest, and quite controversial, hypotheses of this type is the Ryan-Pitman Theory, which argues for a catastrophic deluge about 5600 BC from the Mediterranean Sea into the Black Sea. This has been the subject of considerable discussion and a news article from National Geographic News in February 2009 reported that the flooding might have been "quite mild".[22]
There has also been speculation that a large tsunami in the Mediterranean Sea caused by the Thera eruption, dated ca. 1630–1600 BC geologically, was the historical basis for folklore that evolved into the Deucalion myth. However, the tsunami hit the South Aegean Sea and Crete; it did not affect cities in the mainland of Greece such as Mycenae, Athens, and Thebes which continued to prosper, therefore it had a local rather than a regionwide effect[23].
Another theory is that a meteor or comet crashed into the Indian Ocean in prehistoric times around 2800-3000 BC, created the 30-km undersea Burckle Crater and generated a giant tsunami that flooded coastal lands"

"Maybe those paleo cave painters and other existing paleo records are just paleo men of the very high altitudes... but what about those big majority of paleo life that got submerged underwater?"
what, precisely, is the "high altitudes" of the areas where the cave paintings are found -- south france, north-east spain, eastern-central europe, israel, etc.
addressing your topic in more general terms, this is what i have to say at the moment:
~ if i remember correctly, the last ice age is said to have happened some 70,000-10,000 years before present > 1 huge, or many, flood(s) must have ensued
~ the cro-magnon, the authors of human-cum-animal cave paintings, were up & running roughly in the 2nd half of that last glaciation period
~ archeological records of rice cultivation (a flood crop, if you look at it) are at least as old as 8,000 bce -- neolithic agriculture
in sum: any biblical or otherwise recent flood (i.e. after 8,000 bce) is not paleo but neolithic
