When animal eat grass/plants, they go and eat a bite here, another bite there. There reason for this is that the plant releases a toxin as soon as it is being eaten, to protect itself, and it can survive if the plant is only partly eaten. The plant becomes bitter/not tasty for the animal, and so it moves on to the next patch. So one could imagine the toxins one could ingest if harvesting the wrong way or eating too much of the veg/greens. You don't get that with fallen/ripe fruits. (But maybe/probably with unripe ones)
