Something similar has happened to the Chernobyl area, lots of wildlife has come back/taken over.

Yes people, some of them relatives, told me in highly gullible tones that Czernobyl had a huge radioactive fallout over Europe. This was absolute rubbish, with Irish farmers making bogus claims that their sheep had been contaminated by radiation from Czernobyl. Some here even foolishly cited Fukushima as being dangerous to the US West Coast. I had to explain how radiation is present in natural amounts in the worlds oceans, in rocks(eg:- Aberdeen), and how, when radiation is dispersed over a wide area or diluted in the world's oceans, it's nothing to worry about. Yet, I had an Italian neighbour who foolishly fell into this scam of inviting a poor Ukrainian boy from the Czernobyl area - god the Ukrainians must have laughed their heads  off at such liberal foolishness.

As we see, any massive reduction in human numbers inevitably leads to  a large rise in the wildlife population. I recall that the US once set up a national park in the ocean, with fishing  wholly banned in the area. The result was that fishermen fishing near that area experienced  a sudden rise in catches in future years. Basically, humans are bad for the environment/Nature. Radioactivity is not to blame.

Yes, people are really the problem. In Detroit, bumblebee are coming back big time: "urban decay" means less people, less lawns, less pesticides:
