Title: Insects
Post by: Sully on July 12, 2008, 02:11:39 am
Any body here know of a reliable safe source of insects?

I'm waiting for mid august. Sworms of grass hoppers gather. I'm going out there with a net!  ;D

I used to eat insects when i was a kid.

I've wondered whether it would be possible to be self sufficient by farming you own insects eg snail farm in a first world famine. Would there be enough fat? What would you do to survive?

I ate a grass hopper the other day. I liked how it tasted, but it was a new taste for me.

http://www.manataka.org/page160.html (http://www.manataka.org/page160.html) is a site about eating insects; grasshoppers and meal worms in particular. It explains how to raise them and has some recipes. The recipes are all cooked (except for the natural style at the end) and have some pretty bad ingredients so I would disregard them.

I would prefer to try insects cooked first since it would be more familiar.

I remember talking to my Grandad who was a POW (5years), they would eat absolutely anything (maggots). Even mixed the toothpaste with rice they were given by the Red Cross?

He also used to say that the boys who were not fully grown yet would not make it while the older ones like himself survived.
