Title: An idea to make fish farms healthier
Post by: ster546464@yahoo.co.uk on June 08, 2010, 08:53:25 pm
Most fish farms are loaded with mercury, fed GMO corn, and soaked in pcb's etc.

My idea would be make a fish farm, salmon or whatever, and only feed the farm spirulina.

This would make healthy fish, and not pollute the ocean as much.

Thoughts ? Would this work ?

Well, there are a number of domestic operations that actually just use open water as feeding grounds, like in the case with some shellfish. The problems IMO with fish farms arn't just poor conditions and unhealthy feed, it is that fish are far more dependent on their ecosystem for health than grazing animals. Supposedly, even the organic farms use poor quality or non biologically appropriate feed, but not sure spirulina will compose or even round out a complete diet. some fish like salmon are at least semi-carnivorous.

Exactly, many fish are carnivorous or semi-carnivorous and need crustaceans etc. to feed on. There are organic farms which give wild seafood to the farmed fish but that just depletes the cosystem even further. The obvious solution is not to overfarm the seas and impose harsh quotas to stop such.

And I should make clear yet again, that there is absolutely no truth to the myths re mercury-in-fish:-

Well , mercury or no mercury, they are fed GM corn, and they still develop properly.

Or, I read they were fed dead fish from the bottom of the ocean, that may be contaminated.

What are the costs involved?
Is it more expensive?
Will the fish grow as fast?
If the fish turn out more expensive, where and who to sell it to?
