Title: How get more fat with sashimi?
Post by: PaleoPhil on July 13, 2010, 06:30:46 am
I enjoy my local corner sashimi restaurant, but wish I could get fat with my sashimi. Any sashimi eaters have tips on how to do this?

Why do you need fat with your sashimi?

One type of fish will be fatter than another.

For example, Blue Marlin is fatter than tuna.

And Blue Fin Tuna will be Fatter than Yellow Fin Tuna.

If you get the BELLY portion of the big fish then you will get a higher percentage of fat.

I've brought fat into sushi restaurants.

whatever your pleasure. I guess you could grate it up and/or possibly thrown in some other ingredients like dulse and a few of the other foods you like to be more presentable on the plate. Shouldn't be too much fuss to bring a small jar.

mackerel is pretty fatty: ~60%

I like it and I miss it when I don't have fat with my meals. I don't handle plant carbs like rice well, which is all they have offered so far at the restaurant (along with miso [soy] soup -v, and an awful iceberg salad -v to make idjits happy--they have very nice sashimi, though).

I know that Asian restaurants tend to serve an American English menu to Americans and an Asian menu in Chinese or Japanese to the Asian customers (a Chinese friend showed me an example of the former and it had completely different dishes than the American version of so-called "Chinese" food). I know that Okinawans traditionally use plenty of pork lard, so I'm hoping that Japanese people eat some sort of animal fat and that this restaurant might have something like that, but I don't know what to ask for and I don't want to insult them or make them think I'm crazy, if it's avoidable.

I guess I could ask for a custom plate of only fatty sashimi--probably would cost a fortune, though.

Ah, I just remembered about roe. That's costly too, but I'll get some of that if there's no better alternative. Maybe if I convince other people to eat like me and go there we might get a custom raw Paleo menu item. ;)

Restaurants are expensive.
I can get sashimi in our wet market for 1/10 the price.

Yes, I know. I live inland, so we don't have any seaport markets, but I do have a healthfood store with less expensive sashimi quality fish (mainly yellowfin tuna). But sometimes I like to go to the restaurant. For one thing, they have many more varieties.

You could pop 3-4 eggs before you go for sashimi, that would increase your fat intake.

Is there anyone who regularly supplements seafood with mammal fat?

Every week or two I do. I don't do it in the same meal though; it doesn't sit well. I eat a ~1 pound swordfish steak and then have some marrow 1/2 hour or so later.

I haven't done the research, so I don't really know, but maybe ask questions about the roe. I'm not sure if it's always fresh (out of the fish or out of a bottle?), actually raw, and it may have refined sugar and, some, even food coloring in it?? I don't know for sure, don't want to be spreading rumors, but just beware. :D

Good idea, thanks.
