Title: How do you wash your produce?
Post by: kurite on July 23, 2010, 02:26:45 pm
Hi I have been washing my produce with natural soap, however after researching its ingredients it didn't seem very "natural" at all. How do all of you wash your produce? Also do any of you wash your meat? thanks

I wash nothing. Particularly with soap. I am not sure it does anything useful. I am sure that it adds a taste and who knows what else.
They seem to say you should rinse everything to get the pesticides off. If it has pesticides washing is not going to help. My vote is leave the dirt and bacteria on there.

I wash store-bought produce.
Quick rinse if it's farmers market and/or organic.
I don't wash produce from my garden.
I never wash meat.

I overwash all my fruits and vegetables because I'm extremely paranoid. Also I let some of the more pesticide-d produce soak in hydrogen peroxide, but that's probably not good for you. I base which vegetables I soak on this chart, it's pretty useful:
