Ok,
I'm looking for more music to be recommended. The trouble is, I don't listen to the radio. I hate that medium, as they 99% of the time emit only rubbishy songs. Online, there are sites that recommend music, but my home computer doens't have Internet access so I can't use those sites as they require you to give them access to your song-lists.
Anyway, here are my (admittedly, very limited) music-preferences re bands/genres, and I'd appreciate any further recommendations people might have re bands/genres very similiar to what I'm thinking of:- any folk songs other than bob dylan(especially american or english or gaelic), ACDC, transvision vamp, rammstein, los fabulosos cadillacs, the clash, eric clapton. I suppose I was brought up in the 80s so I'm used to 80s music, so I'm open to more unusual suggestions, which I'll presumably be able to look up on Youtube.

Check out Sufjan Stevens, especially the CDs "Come on feel the Illinoise" and "Greetings from Michigan". I absolute love his music. Careful about what you might find on youtube though, as he honestly isn't very good live. He is a much better recording artist.
Another one of my favorites is a band called Porcupine Tree. These guys are more Prog Rock. Kind of like Rush, Yes, etc. (check them out too if you haven't already)

Check out Andrew White on Youtube. He's a great folk singer/guitarist. The label he is on is amazing. Candyrat Records, I don't know how they find their amazing musicians. Also check out Andy Mckee and Antoine Dufour, amazing acoustic guitarists. If you like them, also check out Don Alder, Michael Hedges, and Don Ross.
A band called Turin Brakes is very good, and I guess you could consider some of their stuff "folky". But nevertheless very good.
Check out a band called Dispatch.
Ben Harper and Jack Johnson are good.
Do you listen to much classic rock? Moody Blues are great.

This eclectic taste is going to take a week to try out! But very good stuff, so far - moody blues was familiar, of course!

UK radio stations are so badly bad! 99.9% pop garbage...

US stations are no better...
except stations that play classic rock and the like.
You can bet that if it's new and on the radio it's no good!

Australian ones also! but you can get some good stuff if you know where to listen and at what times.

Listen to public radio. XPN in my area has an online listening system, I don't know exactly how it works but people can listen to radio stations on the net right? I would try that, they have a lot of good new music and occasionally older stuff. They also have bands on to perform once in a while.
There's plenty of good music out there if you look. Lots of bands, right off the top of my head I'm thinking of "Wilco."
Also I find that sometimes "bad" music can get good after a while. Sometimes I'll sit in my room and do an acoustic rendition of a corny pop song for myself and end up thinking it sounds cool.

today ive been listening to old time relijun(really rad american band, kinda reminds me of the birthday party, one of my faves), aphrodites child "666 vol 1+2"(a greek prog rock band from the late 60s this is a concept album about the apocolypse, amazing!), john zorn,and hella "the devil isnt red" (if your not familiar with these guys, do yourself a favor!)
anyway i have about months worth of music on an external hard drive i can make a ton of recomendations. i frequently check a blog called mutant sounds, its pretty hit or miss but ive found some major gems...

I really dig "Wilco" especially the albums 'Summerteeth' and 'Being there' they just fit my life.
Also inspire to whip out the old geetar for sesh.

For the folky side of things you could try Avett brothers and Of Monsters and Men. If you have any slight interest in bluegrass at all, I highly recommend the Steeldrivers as a good jumping off point. I could start going on a recommending spree from all different angles, but I'm guessing you're probably going to be overloaded with stuff to listen to from this thread anyway.

Well, I've had to endure an environment for some time in which one particular radio-station was blaring on constantly. Now, most radio songs are crap, imo, but this one was the worst, with only 50-60 songs available at most, and all of them being hip-hop or rap or just low-grade modern pop-hits. Once you've heard each song sung a 1,000+ times, you begin to feel like weeping for humanity.
