Title: Raw egg advice
Post by: Rob on August 15, 2010, 07:15:19 am
I have been reading conflicting reports about the eating of raw egg whites. What is the consensus here? Should I be eating them, or only the yolks?

The few times I've eaten raw eggs I skipped the white; they felt wrong in my mouth so I didn't want them in my stomach.

The consensus is that there is no consensus.I eat whole eggs "Rocky" style in a glass with a little garlic powder and/or a few drops of lemon juice.Sometimes I'll squeeze a tomato in there just for fun.

I figure Paleo man was too hungry and not that particular to separate the yolks anyway ;)

Anyone actually noticed any benefits/differences from eating fertilized eggs instead of infertile eggs?

I found I did better when discarding most of the egg-white from raw eggs. Some people claim that eating more than 24 raw egg-whites a day can cause nutritional deficiencies due to the antinutrient avidin in it. ON the other hand, it has also been claimed that fertilised, raw eggs have far less avidin levels in them.

Benefits no, but differences yes. I like the taste of fertile organic eggs over the others.

I poke two holes in the egg and suck on one. The yolk is particularly tasty and the white is almost tasteless. I can only have two in a row because I feel a bit nauseous if I eat more.

I cannot bring myself to eat them when they are old and stink. Probably just me but I am chicken  ;D

Ayurveda says the the yolk will aggravate Pitta. (create heat etc.)

King Salmon,
I might try your flavouring ideas. Thanks

I used to eat the whole raw egg rocky style as it was a quick and easy breakfast food.  I never particularly liked the taste, never felt satiated by it and felt that it would cause me a few minor issues if continued too frequently.

After a long period without eggs at all and having recently re-introduced raw pastured butter, I have started adding raw egg yolks to my diet.  I warm the butter in my dehydrator and then beat in 3 or 4 egg yolks with a fork until I have a thick, smooth sauce/dip.  I eat this delicious mixture with ground meats or fatty thinly-sliced lamb which has been dehydrated for 1-2hrs.

For me personally, I generally feel the yolks alone are an improvement over consumption of the whole egg.  The avidin biotin binding issue is probably an individual matter and, for some, causes no problems.

Wow you guys are making me hungry! I just made up your egg butter mix. threw in a bit of fresh ground pepper and had it with some chopped up tomatoes from the garden. Very tasty! Thanks.

Great!  Glad you enjoyed it raw-al.  Sounds delicious!  I'd recommend trying it with the meats too.  It makes a wonderful dip to accompany strips of dehydrated fatty lamb.

We just got our meat today and it is a bit of a trek so next trip we will get some lamb. For now I have lots of ground pork and pork chops. So I'll try it with that. Thanks!

I'm sure the pork chops are sufficiently fatty for it to be absolutely delicious!   :P  Enjoy!
