Title: How many grams of meat per day?
Post by: technosmith on November 20, 2010, 04:22:32 am
Hey,
Just wondered amongst you all how much meat you consume on average per day (in grams ideally)?
250g, 350g, 500g, or more?
The reason I ask is I have been increasing my meat consumption, and I just wanted to know what the upper limits tend to be.
Also what tend to be the upper limits regarding fat consumption?
200g = 1800kcal or more? 250g = 2250kcal???
Thanks,
Phil

I don't know, I don't weight my food and I don't even have a scale - there was none in the Paleolithic anyway ;). I just eat what I like till I feel I have enough of it.
PS: Must be just like in the range mentioned by TD below.

It all varies. GS, I think, mentioned 600g a day, I eat from 0g a day to 1.2 kilos of raw meat a day, depending on my appetite.

Wow, impressive speed on the response Tyler.
So you can eat up to 1.2kg! So even if that was 1/4 fat, your talking 900g of meat (225g of protein)!. And 300g of fat (2700kcal).
But your saying on average normally about half that? Or occasionally nowt!
Thanks,
Phil

I don't measure my foods re calories or whatever. All I vaguely notice is the number of grams on the packets of raw meats I buy. So, I have no idea re exact percentages of raw fats. I used to eat far higher levels of raw fats like raw marrow, but eat less of them, these days, as I find I do fine on even raw lean meats like venison.

I apologise Iguana.
Yes, you did come in first place, with a very impressive response time.
You and Tyler will have to battle it out for who is the quickest.

It all varies, as TD said. Generally I don't weigh, measure anything. But AFAIK I eat about 1 kg of muscle-meats, organ-meats and fat, so it's about 120-130 g of protein and 250-300 g of fat a day.

I don't measure anything myself but I've eaten 0-1.8kg meat per day, usually ~600-1.2kg though at the moment.

I don't eat meat everyday. For proteins and fat, some day it may be jackknife clams, another day oysters or mussels, another day eggs, another day sardines, another day walnuts. It's necessary to vary, on the long term. You can perhaps live on beef for a few years if you really want to, but in the long run it's gonna lead you into serious troubles. Our ancestors didn't eat the same meat everyday, they probably ate a lot of small animals, insects, larva and - after organized hunting took place - a very wide range of big animals. They also ate some plant stuff, whatever they found palatable, and so do I.
I think the max amount of meat I ate in single meal was about 2 kg, but it was after a long period of traveling during which I didn't find suitable meat and had eaten mostly fish, coconuts and fruits.

I agree. But you've got a variety of foods - muscle-meats, organ-meats, fats. I seldom eat fish - my instict says: don't eat them - they're not a suitable food for you I don't eat insects, 'cause I don't feel the need to eat them. I love my local mammels and birds and my diet is based entirely upon them :)

The other responses sound about right. You don't have to be anal about measurement, but I found I had to push myself to eat more, or I'd end up undereating and getting weak. It's good to have a rough idea of how much meat and fat you want to eat.

Yer, that's interesting stuff guys.
I'm definitely a bit low at the moment compared to the rest of you, so reckon I'm going to increase somewhat.
As far as variety, its not that easy. I have grass-fed beef and lamb, which I eat a lot of. Plus their organs. I do fish once a week, in the form of tuna. Don't think I'm doing too bad for variety.
More would be good, but I can't find a good source of eggs, and not sure I trust other varieties of fish.
Any thoughts?
Also, how many of you guys do intermittent fasting?

Why not try raw shellfish if you are near the coast. I have found them far more health-boosting than raw fish.
I also do Intermittent Fasting, the 1 large meal a day routine, lasting max. 4 hours each time, but usually much, much less. Perhaps I should do a poll.

Tyler, there is lots of stuff on the internet saying intermittent fasting is a definite 'NO NO' for adrenal fatigue, and that intermittent fasting can actually really damage your adrenals.
What are your thoughts on this as I know a lot of people on this site do intermittent fasting, and have had success. I know you recommend one large meal a day for adrenal fatigue.
I would like to give it a try, but am concerned as my adrenals are not good at the moment anyway.

Ultimately, I can only go by my own experience. I did much better with Intermittent Fasting than on standard 3 meals a day. With 3 or more meals a day I would always feel so sluggish, whereas with Intermittent Fasting, plus the occasional whole day fasts, I felt I was healing slightly faster each day, no doubt due to my body diverting resources away from digestion towards healing(during that critical 1st 4-month period after cutting out all raw dairy from my diet). I also had better concentration/alertness as well. And I have done endless hours of research re glandular issues over the years, so I am pretty certain that I had adrenal burnout as well as thyroid problems. Naturally, my experience may not apply to others, of course.

Thanks Tyler,
I guess I'll just have to suck it and see!
Cheers for the advice.
Oh yer, if I was gonna give some shellfish a try, what would you recommend? What is the type least likely to cause issues. I don't live near the coast but there is a local fishmongers that has quite an extensive range.

I have never once had issues with raw shellfish. I (usually)balk at eating dead shellfish, eating them either live, or killing them myself and eating them immediately afterwards - and I avoid prefrozen shellfish, almost always. I eat everything really:- raw scallops, raw mussels, raw oysters, raw lobsters, raw crabs, raw prawns, raw sea-urchin eggs, raw limpets. Can't get hold of raw whelks as they only provide them cooked and raw clams are too much of a hassle to open. All I can suggest is that raw mussels take a long time to get used to and require almost as much hassle to open as raw clams.

Clams are very nice if someone opens them for you though. Sweet and meaty.

Come on, guys! Mussels are very easy to open and clams can be open the way I already explained here: http://www.rawpaleoforum.com/general-discussion/oysters-vs-clams-vs-mussels/msg43989/#msg43989 and here: http://www.rawpaleoforum.com/general-discussion/oysters-vs-clams-vs-mussels/msg44062/#msg44062
Clams (the big ones on the photo below) are one of the best shellfish for me (very expensive in France), but mussels have a very strong taste and I can't eat many.

I can eat up to 200 raw mussels a day at times. I used to hate them, initially, but got used to them and loved them over time.

Amazing... 200! Never more than 10 or 12 for me! That's a clear indication that everyone is different and that everyone needs specifically adapted portions!

Minor trick:- Use a metal walnut cracker to crack open the live raw mussels. Then use teeth to pry out the mussel flesh out of the shell after using fingers to pry out bits of shell away, and then put the raw flesh each time into a large pint-sized glass. Then , after the glass is more or less filled with raw mussel-flesh, up-end the glass and cover the top of the pint-glass with your other hand, and allow the large amount of seawater therein to gradually leak out through your hand, without the raw mussel-flesh following it. The seawater adds a bitter taste, which is not too pleasant, so it's best to get rid of it.
