Title: Why would raw meat cause digestive problems?
Post by: Josh on May 08, 2011, 10:16:22 pm
Hi. I'm back again in my ongoing quest to be able to eat raw. I have been trying people's suggestions with no luck so far. The acid problem seems gone.

It seems like the only issue I have now is that if I eat wholly raw for a few days, I feel ill and under the weather, feel terribly sluggish in the mornings and brain doesn't work properly, and my stools are infrequent loose and nasty. Should I push through and see what happens or what?

I'm trying to look at it rationally and think of reasons why this could be happening.

Why is it giving me problems to digest?
What are the differences in how our systems digest cooked and raw meats?

If you have any ideas it would be much appreciated. Google is just giving my veggie propaganda.

This happens whether I eat a bit of carb, or no carb.
I can exist on cooked meat with no apparent digestive issues, and feel ok.
Too much rare meat does the same thing as raw.
I have been phasing it in, but it seems hard to get used to the raw.
Prefer the taste of raw now and am craving it.

Why Why Why? I don't understand why I can eat cooked not raw it makes no sense. ;)

What specific meat are you trying to eat raw and having problems with?
Post pictures of it raw.
Post pictures of it cooked.

Have you tried other meats to eat raw?  Other species?  Are you having problems eating those other species raw too?

What percentage calorie-wise are you eating of raw fats with it?  Have you tried unheated honey with it?  How raw is it?  Has it been frozen or dried in some way or possibly otherwise preserved?

Well ok I will do.

I eat good grassfed meats and fish though.

I don't think you'll be able to diagnose a problem with the meat, it must be a digestive issue.

What I'm trying to figure out is what factors could make raw meat harder. It's supposed to be easier to digest.

Top of mind guesses:

1. You are eating too much raw meat... same quantity as cooked.

2. If your meat comes vacuum packed, you don't air it out enough to regain it's natural red color?

3. Are you doing food combining? With vegetables?

4. Do you drink water with your meat?

5. You are eating on the clock instead of eating when hungry?

If you are at a stage in transition where eating raw meat doesn't get your stomach acids flowing, then you might want to sear things first and every day sear a little less until your subconscious kicks in and recognizes raw meat as yummy.

Are you eating enough raw grass fed fat?
Grass fed fat should be soothing to the stomach.

Make sure you are eating grass-fed meat, never-frozen.

Also make sure you are eating the same amounts at the same time of day as when you eat cooked meat.

If it's just a stomach acid issue, then that can be alleviated by eating something salty with it, like dulse flakes, Celtic sea salt, or soy sauce.
