I don't believe people should cook smokey fires indoors, however they certainly shouldn't replace them with 'natural gas' fed fuel either. The fumes given off by this stuff is worse than the h20 and carbon dioxide given off by wood.

This sort of thing is reminiscent of the water companies coming into poor countries and replacing their 'dirty' water with industrial tap. So instead of getting a few harmless parasites (which the natives have adapted to eons ago) along with their mineral rich water, they now get to pay for dead, mineral devoid liquid polluted with lead and arsenic.
