Title: Shelf Life?
Post by: joej627 on April 24, 2012, 04:27:53 am
Hey guys,

seems there are lots of questions i end up having as i transition into all this.  Main thing i am wondering is how long is all this stuff good in the fridge?  It seems that "Fresh" is preferable to "frozen" but that is all i can get at the moment and it seems to be working for me.  But for instance, if i take out some ground beef and some raw bone marrow and thaw it in the fridge how long is it safe to eat?  I don't eat the whole amount of marrow or beef in one day.  I end up making stock with the bones as well.  So what are basic shelf life for all this stuff?

-marrow
-beef (liver, tongue, heart)
-salmon
-lamb

Well, technically speaking "forever". That said, not everyone likes a stinky fridge so I would say a good rule is to eat everything nonfrozen within a week. If the meat is vacuum-packed, this is especially good advice - I have sometimes forgotten raw liver which was vacuum-packed and, after 10 days, a lot of gases were released and the liver tasted very oddly(not like "high-meat" but like poison). I think it had to do with anaerobic bacteria being encouraged to grow since no oxygen was present.Aerobiv bacteria are fine, though.

Oh, raw, live shellfish/fish should ideally be eaten within a day, two max. Live shellfish die after 5-7 days and shrivel rapidly within the fridge due to lack of nutrients.

Ok that sounds about right.  Also, i haven't seen anything about pemmican on here.  Is that considered RPD?

No. It is only partially raw, with half of it consisting of rendered, cooked fat. Disgusting stuff. There's a pemmican manual written by Lex on rawpaleodiet.com, but, really, you should only discuss pemmican in the hot topics forum, as it's not an RPD food and many people get health problems from it.
