Any thoughts on why this is so?

that's because military is not a walk in a park.  a lot of people enlist without any understanding what they get themselves into.  it's like they don't know they will be given a weapon and possibly engage human targets.  a lot of them do not have what it takes.

i would make new recruits pass tough psychological training before enlisting.

I suspect in that case that the military is concerned that if they get into screening too heavily, they will have no cannon fodder left.

Apparently war is traumatic... Who knew?

Most of the people I personally know who joined the military were fucked up or of suspicious character to begin with. You have to be naive or psychotic to sign up to be a paid killer as far as far as I'm concerned.

Well sure...but lots of jobs in the military have nothing to do with combat.  Some people join for the career experience, paid training, free college tuition, or regimented lifestyle.
