Title: Anyone into Chia Seeds?
Post by: goodsamaritan on November 18, 2012, 08:56:21 am
My wife (into cooked paleo, but eats rice occasionally) got into this "super foods" kick and one of the foods she's consuming lately is Chia Seeds.

Here is a post about Chia Seeds: http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/2012/08/13-awesome-reasons-to-eat-chia-seeds-every-day/ (http://www.thewellnesswarrior.com.au/2012/08/13-awesome-reasons-to-eat-chia-seeds-every-day/)

I'm eating sprouted chia seeds right now, and was just thinking that alfalfa sprouts taste better... but now you have pointed out how healthy chia seeds are I will keep sprouting them as well :)

how many days do you sprout chia seeds?

Around 3~4 days - I just put the seeds in a sieve in a bowl of water for half a day then drain, rinse them when they look dry, pull them up the side of the sieve if they look too wet, and then eat them when the sprout root is ~5mm long. I have just started a mix of chia and alfalfa, and next I want to try buckwheat as suggested by Wattlebird.

Thank you for sharing your experience with chia seeds!  I will give sprouting a try.

It would be better to have bigger chia sprouts, as the seed part is still not digestible raw after 3~4 days, so I will experiment on how to get it to grow bigger - small unfolding leaves would be ideal :)

why sprout?   the hull is supposed to be digestible, but then I don't know about anti nutrients that may be present.  (this comes from someone who sprouted almost everything at one time,, long ago.

Van, I saw evidence that the hull was undigested after 3 days of sprouting  l)
Maybe ground up seeds would digest, but I buy into the sprouting makes for easier digestion theory. I know some of you folks are going to say sprouting is bad - but I don't care!  :)

Whattttup !!!

I eat chia seeds when I can find them. Usually though I'll get flax seeds, and run them through my Samson juicer ( with accessory oil attachment extractor), and make fresh flax seed oil!!!

check out www.nutritiondata.com (http://www.nutritiondata.com) on flaxseed oil

it's got like a 8:1 ratio of omega 3 to omega 6. highest ratio of omega3 : omega 6 of any plant seed/nut out there.
