Title: Non-Organic?
Post by: Poncho on January 09, 2013, 11:22:12 am
I purchased some grass-fed beef that was raised here in british columbia, it is not certified organic. Is this okay?

How does it look/taste? If it is bland, it's probably not really very healthy. If it is very rich in flavor and dark in color, it's more likely to be from a healthy animal.
Certified organic doesn't mean a tremendous amount when it comes to grassfed. You may want to research the farm if you are going to eat this farm's meat regularly. At this time of the year, it's probably not really grassfed. At best, the animals are probably getting hay and maybe even some grain. That's why I generally only eat beef during the spring/summer/fall, because the cows will be eating fresh grass.
I'm super-careful about my land-animal-meat sources. Mostly I just eat seafoods, although I do find that beef is really good for my digestion.

I buy the same, non organic but grass-fed here in B.C. as well (where from, if I may ask? I'm in the metro Vancouver area). Been getting meats from the same (Millingtons) British butcher shop for awhile and it all seems very high quality. I read an article in the paper that in Canada, "certified organic" doesn't even really mean anything. The companies write up their forms and then just do whatever, with absolutely no checks at all.
Best to just get suppliers you know and trust to do things right and proper.

Im in Nelson and the meat comes from Creston. Its grass-fed. Im just not from here though so its been hard for me to find anywhere to get good meat to eat raw. This place seems legitimate, but Im nervous haha

If it is possible for you to visit the animals and their slaughter process... that gives me peace of mind.
