Title: African Hunting Videos
Post by: Sully on December 21, 2008, 04:22:40 am
I wanted to post these before but i don't think it worked. The last two are about a pygmy tribe. The second one is about african bushmen.

Awesome videos. Especially #1 and #2 Unfortunately #2 does not want to be embedded. Go to ---http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fkN6C1ur1t8---
Remove the --- and see how spears are used. The village must have had a feast afterwards.

Kill the freaking things already! Good grief! By the way, proud to be of African decent. ;)

Christ, such videos of endless, drawn-out slaughter almost make me want to go vegan! Why can't they have the guts to make a quicker kill. Still, from their POV, I suppose, they can't easily get hold of doctors to fix broken bones etc., so they need to be more careful.
Re african descent:- Perhaps, if one goes far back enough, a million years or so. Personally, I'm a believer in the multiregional hypothesis, where various peoples mixed together, in and outside Africa, to form modern man(eg:- inbreeding with neanderthals etc.). Trouble is that people have such a creationist view of human evolution(even scientists) that they are reluctant to admit that our ancestors could have interbred with "mere apemen" - actually, more and more evidence exists to show that Neanderthals were as intelligent as modern humans, able to speak etc.

Chasing down a half ton animal with just a spear takes more guts than any other type of hunting I've ever heard of. $1,000 to anyone that can do that on this forum.

I think the last video is the same as the #2 video. I liked the video. My little children liked the video. ;D It gives a glimpse of how our paleo ancestors may have used their spears. I've seen pig slaughters, goat slaughters and cow slaughters... these domesticated animals are much easier to slaughter because specialists do the slaughtering... and the domestic animals are restrained by ropes.
This kind of slaughtering seems more what I would expect for wild dangerous beasts and non-specialist regular men folk.

That's true. Quick slaughtering is what we're used to and comfortable with in our modern society. As a matter of life and death, yes, I'd kill anything any way I could in order to survive and feed loved ones. I must agree though, that these videos are vegan fodder (forgive the pun). ;D

I also believe in the multiregional hypothysis. Regarding the Neanderthal, I recently read in National Geographic that Neanderthals had genes assocciated with speech, red hair, and light skin. They also had larger brains than modern humans (even of that time) but they were not physically as co-ordinated. Hence the evidence of once-broken but healed bones...such as those of modern rodeo bull and bronco riders. They would thrust their spears into their prey instead of throwing them. Neanderthals had a much stronger arm than the other. Their inner ear canal was smaller than that of the modern humas suggesting that they were less agile and most likely ambush hunters.
I believe that there were waves of humans out of Africa and into Europe and Asia who inter-bred with the local populatons from previous waves and then went back the other way TO Africa as well.

Neanderthals would have just come from Africa like all other ape descendants anyway.

Good videos, the last one that's separate isn't working for me
If you're talking about #2, they're just trying to stay alive. Those animals can kill people armed with modern firearms, so I wouldn't condemn hunters for not making it quick. Heck, I'd be much more cautious then them.

These videos just go to show how we modernized humans have lost respectful hunting. What we do now is just massacre and torture. There is no longer any reverence in how we get our food.

Unless you've killed game, it's hard to have a sense of what it takes to kill something quickly. It's hard. Your shot has to be perfect. Even shots in the head don't necessarily kill large game quickly.
A friend once witnessed someone shoot a bison in the head with a high-powered rifle at 30 yards, and the bison didn't even seem to notice. He shot it in the head again and it fell down, and as they started walking towards it the bison got right back up and charged them, then turned away and jogged about 1.5 miles before settling down to graze. They caught up with it and shot it square in the head again with the same high-powered rifle and it shuddered, looked like it would charge again, but went back to grazing. They shot it in the head a fourth time, and finally this shot took it down. If it's this hard to kill large game with a high-powered rifle, it's all the more challenging to do it with spears, or arrows.
Even when you shoot something with a high-powered rifle, kills are seldom neat and clean. The only reason the ideal of a quick, clean kill is still alive within our society is because most people don't hunt anymore and because the only point of comparison we have is the killing of domestic animals which we rarely see in person. Most kills of domestic animals are far from clean or quick. I've seen pig skulls where it took 2, 3, sometimes even 4 bullets in the brain before the pig actually died. Cows are the same. Some big slaughterhouses don't even try to kill the cows, they just want to immobilize them. So one or two bullets in the brain immobilizes the cow enough to let the workers start skinning it, and the cow is essentially skinned alive, feeling the whole process until it goes unconscious due to shock. It might not actually die until it is gutted.
We treat animals like commodities; they've lost the quality of being alive and are merely products to be bought and sold. While the videos of killing the elephants and hippos may seem brutal by our idealized standards, at least they didn't treat the animals like commodities.

Shouldn't he have shot the bison behind the shoulder to take out the vitals?

Yes I agree with you. In my last post I was saying how people have lost the way of respectfully killing animals. Now it is just merciless and brutal.

I think the cattle gun is the easiest and painless way to kill them. Shooting them 2-3 times with rifles does not seem like an effective way to do it.
"The principle behind captive bolt stunning is a forceful strike on the forehead using a bolt to induce unconsciousness. ... With cattle, goats, sheep, and horses,[3] a penetrating stunner is typically used since it destroys the cerebrum while leaving the brain stem intact; this results in a more consistently reliable stun, and ensures the animal's heart continues to beat during the bleeding process. Captive bolts allow for meat trimmings from the head to be salvaged. In some veal operations, a non-penetrating concussive stunner is used in order to preserve the brains for further processing."

Take out the vitals? You don't "take out" vitals. You can shoot the animal in the vital organs, but that doesn't kill an animal right away. The deer I shot last fall was shot through a lung and part of its liver, and it lived for probably 15 minutes before it died.
Think of all of the people who've been shot in the chest, sometimes even several times, and still survived. This is another instance of the myth of the clean, quick kill. Clean, quick kills rarely happen.

'Take out the vital's' is the lingo many bow-hunters use. I was not suggesting this would be a 'quick clean kill'... But it seems better than what your friend did... Trying to shoot through it's skull.

Amen. I agree entirely pioneer. There's no reverence shown in how we obtain, prepare or eat our food and it feels so wrong to me. Perhaps I take this to the extreme, but I often fail in biting my tongue when my partner mindlessly throws a pack of meat or fish into the shopping basket or bolts a meal down without any acknowledgement of the flavour, source etc. Such are clear examples of this lack of reverence and respect for food which is now rife among our throwaway society.
Some big slaughterhouses don't even try to kill the cows, they just want to immobilize them. Whilst the brutality of the earlier videos turned my stomach and, like Tyler, made me feel like going vegan I agree with your sentiments here Eric. You put it succinctly that we treat animals, indeed all food for that matter, like commodities.
That's horrific Eric about the slaughterhouses. These are some of the very reasons why I'm thinking of switching to eating nothing but wild meats such as local venison. Despite the difficulty described in attaining a clean, quick death, there is far less opportunity for fear, pain and cruelty all-round.

Hunting large animals with spears can be killed many ways. Sometimes it hits the neck, heart, lungs. You can injure it by legs. Then finish it when its limping. All depens on your goal.
I like thrusting with a large spear for animals like bison or elephants etc. Surround it with man people, and thrust. Through the ribs, then dig the stick around if you have timen. Smaller spears would be for throwing. I would aim around the ribs, under the around the arm pit.
With a gun, I would shoot in the head, so the metals don't get in my meat and organs
