Title: WA state GMO labeling issues currently at hand.
Post by: Dr. D on October 10, 2013, 07:47:10 am
There has been ongoing debate concerning the law around labeling GMO products. It seems in the organic world they are pressing for GMO, arguing that it would help clarify what is GMO or not in the grocery store. IMO this is a good thing, as I think we can all agree, it's a small step in the right direction.
However, as I watch TV/news/other media, there seems to be STRONG backing against it. For example, the Washington State Farm Bureau is INSISTENT that it will cause more work for farmers. Yet nobody questions what farmers? Wheat and corn and soy farmers for sure!! They have no non-GMO crops! This kind of labeling may finally turn people on to the idea of how much genetically modified foods they are eating. As for fruit farmers, we have little to no GMO in WA state, in fact none IIRC. Maybe Watermelons, but not many come from WA.
Another argument is the law is "incomplete" and there are exceptions to the labeling, dog food made with the same meat source as something thats gmo would be labeled, but the same meat wouldn't be.

It seems like a money driven thing, just curious what you guys know about this sort of political drive.
