Title: menstruation
Post by: Ioanna on November 12, 2013, 04:47:02 am
i know this has been discussed but what is the truth on this monthly hemorrhaging?

i have to mindfully eat to get my period, especially if i'm happy and content which simply means that i'm physically/emotionally feeling balanced.  there's no way if food were scarce i'd be getting mine. i have food, i eat what i want, and my body fat might be such that my bmi is just hovering around 18-19 ('supposed' to be 18.5 at minimum).

if/when it gets low, i eat to bring it up IF my period is absent, but  i feel fine! i'm just afraid, so i eat more than i want to in order to get it back. i don't feel as well necessarily, but the fear is gone.

i'm tired of this cycle, the fear, and tired of having to be so mindful.

Check out the work of Beverly Strassmann, a scientist who studied menstruation and related social customs in "ancestral" societies. Her findings, in terms of lifetime menstrual cycles of females, is that 40 years worth of 28-day cycles is not the human norm. I forget her exact numbers, but they are along the lines of a modern-day four-fold increase in menstrual cycles when compared to women before the industrial age - i.e., for the 400 lifetime menses of today's woman, earlier woman had 100 lifetime menses. She takes into account later menarche, frequent pregnancy, and prolonged breastfeeding, but she also reports that non-pregnant and non-nursing women average much-longer-than 28-day cycles, averaging 7 menstrual cycles per year. This type of statistic becomes significant when it is correlated with lower rates of "female" diseases.

When me and my Ex had the baby factory running at full strength, I think she may have only had 10 periods over a 5 year span. She was either pregnant or nursing the whole time.

But when she did have one, she got so mean and irritable that she would run me out of the house.

Ever think about getting pregnant?
If you nurse extensively after the birth you could go over two years without a heavy period?

It is natural to women to make babies and my EXs health actually seemed to improve during pregnancy and nursing.

Do you chart the other parts of your cycle like ovulation?  Do you have obvious signals you are, or do you feel other emotional or physical symptoms of hormonal changes over the course of the month?
