Title: Let's talk poop...
Post by: HoneyBadger on July 01, 2016, 07:36:51 am
Ha! Ok, I know that poop is kind of a taboo topic these days but I have some questions regarding poop frequency and quantity on a raw diet vs. SAD.  As some of you may know from reading my introductory post, I got pretty constipated on SAD which really isn't a surprise.  When I switched to high-carb, low-fat vegan or 80/10/10, my bowel movements (regarding frequency) improved from having to take laxatives/enemas to having nice, formed movements at least 2x a day.  Before getting constipated on SAD, I was having 3+ bowel movements a day, typically after each large meal.

Since moving to an omnivore raw diet (lower carb, higher fat and protein), I've noticed I will only have one bowel movement a day.  However, it doesn't feel like I'm constipated or like it's a complete movement which is nice and I'm not complaining about that. However, what I am confused about is that many old texts (from soilandhealth.org along with other data) shows that it is optimal to move the bowels after each meal. I practice Intermittent fasting and typically eat only two large meals a day so I feel I should be having at least 2 bowel movements a day according to the research regarding such.

I guess I'm wondering if anyone else here has noticed a decreased amount of bowel movements per day on this diet. Like I said, I don't feel constipated or like I'm only partially evacuating, just wondering if this is "normal" or if I need to keep working on my digestion so I have a bowel movement after each meal like I did previously while on SAD. Any and all input is welcomed, thank you!

I go once or twice a day. I eat 4-5 times a day.

I consider myself fairly regular and go about once every day and a half (give or take a few hours). Once a day on your current regiment is just fine.

Since I eat little vegetation and most of the copious amounts of fat I consume is absorbed entirely, much of the protein being absorbed as well, then there isn't nearly the volume of waste, compared to those who eat larger amounts of indigestible plant fiber.

It all depends on what you eat. I find that eating raw plant foods or the very occasional cooked foods makes my stools much bigger and more frequent. Raw sauerkraut is the worst in this respect, no doubt due to the fibre in it. People eating only raw animal food tend to have the smallest poop and  have  bowel movements much less frequently than those who eat other things.

I have occasionally had many bowel-movements in one day but this was always because my body could not properly digest the food so sent it quickly to the colon to be expelled. Otherwise, my bowel-movements can range from once or twice a day to once every 48 hours. Probably less so if I fast for many days, can't recall.

Thank you all for your replies, they were quite reassuring. So I'm guessing that because the body is better able to assimilate the raw food, especially the animal meat/fat, I must simply not have as much waste to get rid of since it appears that those of you who replied seem to go only once or twice a day too.
