Title: Are Lungs equally good as other organs like liver/heart/tongue?
Post by: jibrael on November 19, 2018, 07:41:23 pm
I am not able to get the wild liver/heart, but lungs of deer are offered to me.

So my question is, if lungs are equally healthy and is it worth to buy them?

I'm sorry to tell you this but my own experience was that raw lungs were a tasteless, wholly cartilaginous, difficult-to-chew-mess, taking ages to gulp down in the end. I had such difficulty with them and never detected any positive(or negative) effect from them that I  stopped eating them  c. 12 years ago. Same goes for raw testicles from large mammals. Maybe I might have been able to easily eat them if they had been aged for a long time, who knows?

I really like lungs.  Make sure to inspect bronchi for lung worms.  Use a really sharp knife to cut it into small pieces.  I usually keep them semi-frozen.  That way it is easier to cut.

I love lamb lungs, they are super soft and in my experience have just the right amount of flavor.
Would buy.

If you can't get deer liver I would suggest eating pastured lamb or other grass-fed liver, at least once in a while. Liver is a superfood that provides so many nutrients especially when consumed raw that I would choose it over any other organ (except tongue due to it's fat and taste, which goes nicely with liver) or muscle meat if I had to so long as you had some fat to consume along with it. Brains & kidneys are nice too but liver is essential.
