Does the climate really matter? I`m becoming skeptical toward cold climate.. here`s no right summer at all (living in (F)inland).

As you all know, everything originates from the sun. It faciliates and speeds detoxification and healing processes. Bacteria are doing better in warm and humid climate. Fresh grass makes meat fattier. IMO, cold promotes aging and all kinds of decaying. Even pollution is more harmful when breathed in with frozen cold air. There`s no need to even mention that longevity is unknown.

I`m feeling alive when it`s so called summer here, as everyone else does.

If you have something good to say from this kind of climate, please let me know  ;)

Planning to move elsewhere, half-seriously.. still having inability to endure cold.

I far prefer a cold climate.This is partly because I had heat-intolerance for years prior to going rawpalaeo, but also because I'm an avid skier and because I always feel more alive when it's cold. When it's warm or hot, I just feel sluggish and not at my best, which is why I'm grateful that I live in the UK, with a generally cold, wet climate.

Yes and no. I`m eating bone marrow always when it`s available, fatty lamb/beef, some fresh and rotten organs, milk, butter (about half pound per week) and eggs (rare in winter, because chickens don`t lay much) for fat, all is organic (some aren`t so paleo, sorry for that). I really hope that I would eat more animal fats like bone marrow, lard and butter.

I have heard that it`s very long growing season in UK (even 360 days). It`s only about 3 months here, so it´s impossible to have any kind of crop from vegetables. Even thought it`s summer, there may be frost sometimes, and crops die.

I think if anything a cold climate would make you live longer since it would slightly lower body temperature. In cold blooded animals where body temperature is not regulated much, the same animal living in cold climates can live 500% longer. In warm blooded animals like humans, the body temperature doesn't change as much with climate or death occurs, so effect no so drastic.

I would say it depends on genetics and diet. Someone with brown to dark brown skin may do better in warm climates. Someone with light skin may do better in cooler climates. I feel comfortable here in Wisconsin. My mother has European ancestry. My father lives and is from the middles east.

    Is the milk soured or fermented?  Which organs?  Are all the foods raw?  You don't bother me if you eat some neolithic foods.  I think Finnish tolerate them better than most peoples usually anyway. 

    What kind of outdoor activity do you get?  Do you take cool showers or baths?  Use radiator or other method to heat your home?  Self massage?  There are so many things to go through tweaking, but if you like warm climate, you should be where you enjoy.

The key seems to be vitamin D3. If it's winter and you can't get much sun, then try to get vitamin D3 from foods:

Cod liver oil
Salmon
Mackerel
Fresh tuna fish
Sardines
Egg (yolk)
Liver
etc.

I`m eating both: fermented and fresh milk. Kidney and liver are the most typical (testicles rare). Everything I eat is completely raw (it has been so about 2 years now) and organic/wild. You`re right, neolithic foods are really better tolerated here (even pasteurized products). My body seems to love (raw) butter/honey mixture.

Taking care of animals and all kind of practical working include my outdoor activity. I love trekking in wilderness, sauna and swimming. My parents house where I live now hasn`t radiator warming, but water warming. My incoming house needs wood to keep warm, so I have to pollute myself. (smoke makes me headache which lasts 2 days)

There`s maybe one good thing: low population, so pollution levels are quite low (except winter). Here`s fairly under 40 000 people in my home town.

I have customers who grew up in Canada.
They recently migrated to the Philippines.
They said they just grew tired of the cold in Canada.

I would say that white/pale skin is NEVER normal. Even Eskimos aren`t white, although they can`t tan. I know many very healthy guys whose skin is deep brown/red (not inflamed), like Aajonus`s. White skin is ugly. Persons with dark hairs and skin look gorgeous.

 I might like to point out that the skin of many East Asians/Orientals can be even whiter/paler than that of a number of Caucasians. Have a look at the actress Rosalind Chao, for example. As for tanned skin being claimed to be  prettier due to being darker that I suppose is more of a Caucasian viewpoint. Indians, for example prefer lighter-coloured skin.

Incidentally, I've heard the usual claims re the origin of white skin and the  climate one doesn't make sense(if you think about it Africans are far more adapted to hot climates(their physical aspects protecting against the heat, not just the melanin) while Asians(Orientals, that is, like the Inuit are far more adapted to cold climates due to having much shorter stature etc.). The claim re milk-consumption creating white skin doesn't make sense either as it's very clear that white skin originated much earlier(for example, Neanderthals are described as being commonly red-haired,meaning that white skin originated at least many 100s of thousands of years ago, if not more.Having seen light-skinned monkeys, such as the Japanese macaque, I can imagine a possibly much older origin.

    I think you say all the liver is fermented?  Even so, I was thinking along the lines of carbohydrates.  That maybe fresh milk and other carb containing food may make it harder to tolerate cold.

    Where do you swim?  I love river water.  Each type of water has its own quality(ies) be they positive or negative.  If a pool, is it heated?  Saunas are so good for detox, must put that on my list.  Any kind of stove, radiator etc that I've tried so far can give me headaches.  Half a dozen of one, six of the other, heat may be needed some time and you have to do what you can.  I wish you luck with the wood and everything.  I may start using one myself.  Maybe we can exchange ideas on what kind of wood etc.

    Veganism made my skin redder and orange-er, but I did not necessarily feel better.  Eating RAF got my skin lighter colored, but feels much healthier in the skin for me, joints and bones.  I haven't been doing it as long as aajonus though.  Dark hair does look beautiful and can be a sign of healthy hormones and dark skin generally looks healthier than most people with light, but there are so many variables, I can't be concerned.

Perhaps it is the lack of sunlight as much as the cold that is discouraging? Techniques of feng shui bring light and energy into your home. I did this last winter and it helped significantly.

Rather than cold and dark causing decay, they cause contraction - like hibernation. You live in an unusual climate and it seems that in order to thrive there a person would need to find ways of inducing vitality - just as those in a warmer climate learn to conserve it.

I had darker, redder skin-tone in my pre-rawpalaeo days, along with distinct black circles under my eyes. Skin-disorders are apparently normal for those with wrecked glandular systems. My skin nowadays looks much lighter/paler in tone, almost glowing. Incidentally, a darker skin-tone isn't necessarily healthy. Look at tanning, which darkens the skin, and is a sign of the skin being damaged by the sun's rays.

Red hair predates pale skin by millions of years, predating homo sapiens. Remember, orang-utans have red hair without pale skin:

Fair skin is an advantage where there is a less sunlight. Fair skin absorbs more vitamin D from the sun, so people with dark skin have a harder time getting necessary vitamin D in colder climates.

They may die if the temperature is too cold for them to survive, but if it's tolerable than they live longer. Much longer.

I have pale skin and even I acknowledge that pale skin is a deformity. It is entirely unnecessary in any environment. The Sami, Nenets, Inuit, etc., who lived in the most northerly Arctic altitudes originally had swarthy skin, rather than pale. Here are some examples:

Some of them have become pale by mixing with paler peoples. Scientific evidence has recently shown that pale skin did not exist among any hominids until at most 12,000 years ago, as I indicated above. If you eat RPD, even if you are pale, you will find your skin burns less readily and may even tan a bit, as mine started to when I when standard Paleo, which was the first tanning I had experienced in over a decade.

I don't let the fact that pale skin is a mutation brought on by agrarian foods bother me, and I don't feel it necessary to pretend that pale skin is natural. I just eat my RPD, enjoy the fact that I burn less easily, and enjoy life.

Of course, given my experience with my fellow pale folk, I know this knowledge will come as a shock and there will be much resistance. That is only natural and to be expected. Curse not your fate, or darker skinned folk, etc., for that is futile and destructive. You may curse agrarian foods if you wish, and it may help you avoid being tempted by them.

As Tyler indicated, the idea that pale skin comes from climate alone is bogus and has been refuted by the evidence. If climate were the only factor, then all indigenous Arctic peoples would be pale. This is clearly not the case, even in modern times.

BTW, Tyler, you may be aware that black circles under the eyes are associated with excessive plant eating, due to anemia and other deficiencies, probably exacerbated by inflammation and weak capillary walls.

As for the paler non-human primates. If you examine their diets you will probably find they eat lots of plant foods and include fruits, seeds and/or cereals in their diets.

The tarsier is a carnivorous primate. Despite being nocturnal, most wild tarsiers do not have pale skin (http://scienceblogs.com/zooillogix/2008/06/filipino_tarsiers.php, http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_512VEbm7xB0/SlDkErpyIdI/AAAAAAAAeSc/P5-TJFvCe7k/s400/17.jpg). In interesting contrast to the giant pandas, which are carnivores that eat 99% bamboo, "Young tarsiers are born furred, and with open eyes, and are able to climb within a day of birth. They reach sexual maturity by the end of their second year." Whereas the plant-eating giant pandas are born blind, with much less hair than most mammals, and helpless. Compared to most mammals, giant pandas are undersexed and have poor fertility, even in the wild. Notice any trends here? It's not surprising at all that plant-food advocates like Dr. Kellogg claimed that vegetables suppress the sex drive and meats promote it.

The only Inuk I've ever seen with shirt off had skin as white as any white man. His face, however, was as brown as any others who spend much time outside. Not as brown as mine when I returned from a three week vacation in the Caribbean many years ago.

    Herbivorous lizards?  They need to lay on warming rocks in the sun to warm their crops (area under/between tail and torso) or they won't digest their food.  Ideally the air temperature should be between ninety and one hundred degrees F for this to happen at least for several hours each day. 

    Without direct sunlight, since their diets do no provide vitamin D, their bones bend and crumble.

This is the most absurd bad science I have ever read and shows just why we should heed RawKyle's call to ignore much of the guff that has been written about linking specific genes to diet or everything else. The simple fact is that the Cro-magnon(who've been studied extensively had pale skin, and, these existed throughout the Palaeolithic in Europe/Western Asia). Here's an anthropology blog which cites studies pointing out that red hair existed thousands of years ago into the Palaeolithic(80,000 in this case):-

"For the European red hair-associated Arg151cys and Arg160Trp variants, we estimate an age of ~80,000 years"

also:-"The red hair genes generally produce a somewhat lighter skin tone, even if you aren’t homogeneous for ginger hair genes (ie, red haired). I should know, I have one pale ginger gene from Granny, and I’m porcelain skinned and burn very easily, even with the dark hair. Red haired individuals are a lot lighter skinned and don’t tan, and prone to sunburn. Alos, genes that cause lighter eye colours also lighten skin colour.

Leaving aside the Neanderthal date of this gene, this would make the first Europeans pretty much the same skin tone wise as modern ones, as the red hair MC1R mutations affect skin as well as hair colour, almost like a mild form of albinism. This would have meant there probably wasn’t much difference between Cro Magnon and Modern European skin tone."

Meaningless. Judging from this study, light skin has always been a part of our ancestry. This study shows that our common ancestor we have with the apes must have had pale skin given that chimpanzees have pale skin:-

There's a serious problem with the above argument since there is good reason, in scientific circles nowadays, to acknowledge that Neanderthals interbred with ancient humans.

This is just an absurd comment. For such a trait to arise it had to be a positive selective trait. For example, one of the suggestions I mentioned was that Africans are better adapted to hotter climates with East Asians more adapted to colder climates(due to stature/shape of noses etc.), with Europeans therefore presumably being more adapted to temperate climates.

There is another, more likely explanation for lighter skin being selected:- "A 2006 study provides evidence that the light skin pigmentation observed in Europeans and East Asians arose independently. They concluded that light pigmentation in Europeans is at least partially due to the effects of positive directional and/or sexual selection":-

I once asked a palaeoanthroplogist why The Inuit didn't have fair skin/blue eyes and the answer was that they came to the Arctic too recently for such a 100% change to take place.

The 2nd Inuit photo, the woman on the left is decidedly paler. The 3rd and 4th photo and pictrue show rather pale skin, IMO(almost glowing in the 3rd link).

Plus. I've seen plenty of (unmixed) Inuit with very pale skin., looking more like this:-

The first Nenet photo is something of an own goal, showing rather pale features. The 2nd photo shows a baby with remarkably pale skin.

There is zero evidence linking the origin of pale skin to the consumption of agrarian foods, whether dairy or otherwise, especially since paler skin originated much earlier. See my earlier post.

As Tyler indicated, the idea that pale skin comes from climate alone is bogus and has been refuted by the evidence. If climate were the only factor, then all indigenous Arctic peoples would be pale. This is clearly not the case, even in modern times.

Quite wrong, as pointed out previously , the Arctic Native peoples haven't been there long enough for selective traits to appear, though many have remarkably pale skin. And I don't rule the climate-notion out entirely, though I prefer the more likely sexual selection theory as shown above.

Fair skin is an advantage where there is a less sunlight. Fair skin absorbs more vitamin D from the sun, so people with dark skin have a harder time getting necessary vitamin D in colder climates.

This is the explanation I am familiar with, that the change occurred due to an adaptation along the lines of natural selection.

Where there is snow there will be sunglare - and tanning of exposed skin even in "winter" or overcast conditions.

The only Inuk I've ever seen with shirt off had skin as white as any white man. His face, however, was as brown as any others who spend much time outside. Not as brown as mine when I returned from a three week vacation in the Caribbean many years ago.
If it was at all brown then it was browner than my skin ever gets. Really pale skin never gets brown, especially when eating a modern diet. My skin started tanning a little on Paleo and a bit more on RPD, but still never comes close to brown. I'll bet that Inuk's untanned skin was still darker than mine.

Lack of sunlight necessitating pale skin to absorb vitamin D is a hypothesis proposed in the past behind why Scandinavians are pale, but scientists have been puzzled for decades as to why indigenous peoples are not even paler, given that they've been living even farther north and for much longer. Doesn't that puzzle you? If climate and environment are the only or main factors, then why aren't the indigenous peoples paler than the Caucasians?

I have long believed there are likely multiple factors. I think everyone can agree that genetics are one factor, and sexual selection is probably another, but I wouldn't rule out diet and its influence on epigenetics (and in the longer term, genetics) as a factor. Particularly when it comes to super-pale skin. There are still unanswered questions and no apparent consensus (either in the scientific community or here), so it should be interesting to see what future research reveals.

Thanks Yon. That's all I'm saying. It's a possibility and it's too early in the research to dismiss it. I predict we'll see more research connecting diet to pale skin in the future.

I believe that level of sunlight and adaptation to it's lack (due to variations in climate and geography) is one of the factors affecting genetic development of skin color. I just don't buy that sunlight is the only factor.

    Vitamin D (the sunshine vitamin that darkens skin) deficiency and allergy to grains (celiac) go hand in hand.  I wonder if this could be related to a race evolving to have lighter skin.

    Sunshine may be very important so that people can tolerate grain.  In sunnier climes grain may be tolerated better for a number of reasons.  Also there may be less incidence of autoimmune disease there for a number of integral reasons.

Generally, sexual selection usually does involve some form of advantage, however slight. As for diet, as I pointed out, re that previous blog, red hair (and therefore coinciding lighter skin)came to modern humans at least many tens of thousands of years before any change in the diet, so claiming that agrarian diets led to paler skin just doesn't make any sense. Plus, grains were first introduced into the Middle-East and even the Indians had grains well before Northern Europeans(there are articles showing that dairy and grains came much later to Northern Europe) - so one would expect Middle-Easterners and Indians to have paler skin than Europeans, if your theory had any validity at all. The fact that Australian Aborigines only changed their palaeo-style diet to SAD very recently in historical terms, with the blond-hair phenomenon being present well before that dietary change. As I pointed out before, the Inuit simply haven't been around long enough in the Arctic for all of them to develop pale skin in that time, due to climate. It takes much longer, that is if climate is involved. Also, given that the Inuit/Nenets etc. have been largely isolated societies in most regions for millenia, with some of them having virtually no intermarriage-rate with Caucasians until very recently, and given the added fact that such societies routinely show far more paler-skinned Inuit etc. than darker-skinned Natives, it's clear that the climate theory might well be right.

Well, no. My current diet has helped a lot but it's more the absence of certain foods that has helped(ie primarily the wholesale reduction in the levels of heat-created toxins in my body due to not eating cooked foods, and the removal of raw dairy in my diet). And my previous conditions, prior to this rawpalaeodiet, such as chronic fatigue or adrenal burnout etc., are certainly not considered impossible to cure by scientists, just rather difficult to cure, that's all. That's why I am truly sceptical of claims that diet can do magical, supernatural  things like remove inherited genetic conditions or change skin-colour.

Like I said, those Natives came to those Arctic regions only recently in epochal terms(a palaeoanthropologist once  mentioned to me that the Inuit only moved  to the Arctic c.6,000 years ago, for example, hardly enough time for a full-scale shift in skin-colour from very dark to ultra-pale).

 For my own part, I am deeply unconvinced at the notion that Caucasians originated in colder climes, simply because East Asians are more adapted to colder climes given their short body structure etc., one reason given for Inuit tribes' higher chances of survival in the Arctic than the Vikings, in ages past.


Also, the vitamin D theory, was called faulty by someone else who pointed out that wild animals with fur can still get plenty of vitamin D, so that I don't see how the sunlight factor is all that relevant re pale or dark skin.

Cordain simply quotes from scripture, so to speak. Given that his acid/alkaline theory appears to be dead in the water, I can't see how the above is plausible either. At any rate, claims that lighter skin originated so late in human evolution are clearly bogus since features like red hair(which coincide with pale skin) came many tens of millenia before this, plus 10-12,000 years is too short for such a major feature as pale skin to become prominent in a population. Evolution is a slow process. Come to think of it, if climate influenced pale skin/lighter hair, one would logically have to assume that the Palaeolithic Ice Age was instrumental in producing such paler skin, in which case one would have to drive back the origin thereof far further back than you think.

There's a great deal of overlap. Like I said, I've seen ethnic (unmixed Chinese with skin colour the same as Northern Europeans.

Asians aren't genetically short.  When Chinese people come to the US, their children that are raised on an American diet are usually 6 or 8 inches taller than their parents, on average.  It's the almost total lack of animal foods in the Chinese diet that make them short, for the most part.  Also, Koreans are naturally pretty tall.  I imagine that Koreans might even be taller than Americans, on average, if they were raised on the same diet.

    I have a Korean friend raised mostly on SAD.  Turned out very short, not a dwarf or anything though.

    I don't think it's only what we eat, but what we digest.  I was raised on VAF and I didn't get very tall.  Then I became vegan and grew no more.  In my forties I started to eat RVAF, and almost immediately I got taller (than I ever was).  A portion of our population would be taller (and of course healthier) if so much wasn't pre-pasteurized and cooked.

Rawzi, good point on digestion and I agree that digestion and absorption are part of the overall nutritional picture, but are you sure that you literally grew taller, or might there have been some straightening involved? I know I straightened a little on Paleo and then a tiny bit more on RPD so far (my physical therapist friend also noticed a more dramatic result I've had that I missed: less-rounded shoulders).

I've been to the US and seen Asian citizens there and have also spotted  Asian American actors/actresses in the media and they are definitely not 6 to 8 inches taller than their counterparts in Asia, they're still very short. Plus, the 1 or 2 articles I've read on the subject described only a small increase in height for Asian Americans(although it was described as still ongoing, whereas, oddly, the height of Caucasian Americans has gone straight down vis-a-vis Europan Caucasians, despite the fact that Americans were one of the world's tallest populations up to a century ago or so). In other words, diet and height are not inextricably interlinked, there are many other factors.

I vaguely recall 1 article that claimed that increased height was actually a sign of a sort of malnutrition(ie the result of eating lots of food rather than too little, but with the huge amounts of food actually lacking in essential nutrients). Can't remember where I found that article.

Oh, and if height is supposedly linked to diet (specifically raw or cooked animal products)  then, why oh why are the Inuit so short?

I'm afraid that's a bad example to give. The (unmixed) Manchus are a separate ethnic group(Tungusic) from the Chinese. I seem to recall from reading about China that the Manchus had some Caucasian admixture, which would explain the difference in height. On a side-note, last I checked Chinese history, the Manchus of the Qing dynasty prized beard-growth and  beard-growth is more of a Caucasian etc. trait than an Oriental one.

No single factor yet explains the evolution of light skin, hair and eye color completely. Which is why I think there are multiple factors involved and have not claimed otherwise (if I did then I must have had a brain fart ;D ). I think this factor is probably the consensus because it's so intuitive and doesn't threaten the profits of the food industry, in addition to the supporting evidence. Yet the consensus answer appears to leave unanswered my above questions. Why did this adaptation to low levels of sunlight with the palest of skin, blond and red hair, and blue/green eyes occur in Scandinavia and the British Isles, but not in Arctic Asia or North America? That's where the dietary hypothesis of Cordain and others may come in. The northwestern Europeans reportedly adopted wheat and bovine dairy as staple foods earlier and more thoroughly than the indigenous Arctic Asians or North Americans. Diet could be one of the key missing pieces of this puzzle that has baffled the consensus-view scientists. There is a history of some dairy consumption (largely reindeer) among Arctic Euro-Asians too, so more research is needed on what the extent of the dietary differences, yet there is likely to be little funding for such endeavors.

Conclusion: Multifactorial

It is absent in eastern Australia , but that's easy to explain, as Australia isn't exactly easy to cross, given deserts etc. Plus, Australian Aborigines have been largely geographically isolated for c.40,000 years from the rest of the world.

Given that blondness is found among Pacific Islanders weren't able to  interbreed with the Aborigines until very recently, due to geographical isolation, one can safely conclude that that particular gene for blond (nonwhite) hair appeared AT LEAST 40,000 years ago when the Australian Aborigines split from the rest of  Southeast Asia and the Pacific, and most likely far, far before that date.

Those studies are heavily flawed. For one thing, as pointed out in wikipedia,

What I find interesting is that the childish anti-ginger prejudice/gingerism(mostly against redheaired males) is only really found in the UK. Red-haired acquaintances of mine have stated that they don't get this sort of prejudice elsewhere in the world. Indeed, in many other areas like Malta, red hair is actually prized along with blond(no doubt due to rarity).

Another simpler explanation for modern prejudice re red hair:-

"Workplace psychologist Professor Cary Cooper, of Lancaster University, says abuse can be "an unhealthy release valve for stress" and redheads, as a visible minority not protected by law, have become a target.

Who knows there could be other possibilities. As mentioned in the article, red hair is seen as the colour of the devil, the colour of blood, and so is feared by some. Perhaps we got red hair from interbreeding with Neanderthals and so it's due to an ingrained racial bias against Neanderthals - though that's less likely than the other notions.

And, of course, studies on personal attractiveness are inevitably going to be loaded with bias due to ingrained notions and behavioural/cultural imprinting etc.. I think there was 1 study, mentioned somewhere or other, which tested babies' responses to photos of attractive women around the world and brown-haired women were rated at the top. Can't find the study, no matter but studies of this sort should be done on infants who haven't been influenced culturally.

Ah, but like I said, there is no proof whatsoever that blue eyes or blond hair originated in Europe.Many people view western Siberia or the Caucasus or other regions as far more likely places of origin for those characteristics. And, it's impossible for those traits to have appeared in North America as humans only entered that continent c. 15,000 years ago, the geentic change would have been too slow to occur in that period.

This is just ridiculous. You know as well as I do, that the vast majority of palaeolithic anthropologists claim that, genetically, we are virtually identical to palaeo humans. Incidentally, epigenetics only changes gene-expression, it can't change/mutate genes completely to produce completely different colours.

Here is an excerpt from beyondveg.com citing a study re this:- "Humans may have indeed eaten these foods for "millennia," but millennia (even 10 millennia) in the overall timeframe of human existence represents 0.4%. I have my doubts, the few Inuit who are really dark-skinned tend to have the kind of dark skin found in more southerly latitudes. All those sources can claim is that the Inuit had to move from Siberia to North America via the Bering Strait. There's no real evidence to suggest that they didn't migrate into Siberia from other parts before that period.

Utter balderdash. If you had read my testimonial on rawpaleodiet.com, you would have noticed that my health-improvements have been quite remarkable on this diet, certainly far greater than any cooked-palaeo's experience,  and on a par with many RPDers(if one counted every minor to major symptom I got rid of, it would come to something like 60-80 of them). It's merely that I have come across so many absurd claims from numerous gurus claiming miraculous healing properties from foods(Hulda Clarke/Marshall protocol etc. etc.) that I don't believe that diet is a cure-all for almost everything. My experience on raw boards/forums is that for people with very serious conditions(like I had) it can take a long time for full recovery(though there were dramatic initial improvements) and that some conditions(eg:- genetic-related) are indeed largely irreversible(ie autistics can heal their digestive system/improve their mood on this diet but not cure their actual condition etc.)

I was actually suggesting, in the past, that you were prone to superstition, not Cordain(all those Noble Savage references, remember). As for Cordain, he seems to have really shot himself in the foot with that unproven acid/alkali theory of his. He seems not to have done much in the way of truly groundbreaking research and , more or less, relied on other scientists to provide this, which makes me sceptical of him. The only benefit I see in him is that he promotes some aspects of cooked palaeo(if not all the good ones)  and is therefore a little right(and mostly wrong) from our POV.

I had read your Geoff Purcell testimonial before and I don't mean to poo-poo it or anything, but I found it to be less dramatic and unusual than the other testimonials and the avg Paleo diet success story I've encountered in the real world and on the Internet. The sorts of improvements you list of gaining energy, better digestion, loss of potbelly, etc. are the sorts that are attested to by people on nearly every diet. They are not the sorts, in my experience, that generate responses of "That's impossible!" I suspect your testimonial would be much more dramatic if you included more of your illness and symptom improvements. Were you concerned that would make it overlong?

I also haven't noticed you discussing your improvements, how great you feel, etc. much in your posts, so I honestly didn't get the impression that your results had been that amazing and I was thinking that maybe as a result when you hear amazing results from some of the rest of us it causes you to be skeptical or even dismissive. Your explanation about coming across many questionable claims from bogus gurus on the Internet does help explain matters.

What annoys me about Wrangham is that there is a small group of people(non-scientists) who believe every single word he utters, yet Wrangham's scientific conclusions are so obviously wrongheaded(with most other scientists ridiculing him for that) that I tend to get annoyed when other people talk about him with quasi-Biblical reverence. I shouldn't though have been so strident on that forum re raw issues as it's really a cooked-palaeo forum - plus, there were a lot of cooked zero-carbers who were rather fanatical in trying desperately to debunk my points re cooked animal food being unhealthy(unsurprising, as those types don't eat anything raw at all).

Probably not. The climate notion sounds like an additional possibility though I'm sceptical of the notion that Caucasians are the best adapted to colder climates. I was merely against the notion of pale skin originating as a result of diet as evolutionary pressure/natural selection was effectively dead-in-the-water by the start of the Neolithic era. Plus, as I said before, one would expect Middle-Easterners to have the palest skin in the world if Neolithic diets really did contribute to paler skin, as they were the first to go in for such diets. At any rate, I doubt that paler skin is a recent trait - it seems the DNA for it was already present in our common ancestor with the apes, judging from that scientist's comments I referenced previously.

Religion was invented in the Middle East/Egypt  by trolls as a means of preventing people from killing the murderous thieves who seek to oppress them. For instance "my mum was a goddess, so you should not kill me or she will get you". Presently known as the divine right of kings, and also the "God's chosen people" ploy - every coin in my pocket bears the inscription "D.G.REGINA", meaning "by the grace of God, Queen".


Almost universally successful due to the stupidity resulting from the brain damage cause by consumption of cereal grains and other carbohydrates along with fat deficiency. Spread by empire-builders.

Yeah, me too. I shared some personal stuff at the Paleofood forum, but not a lot, partly because I'm a private person, and partly because I still had some significant health issues there and didn't know whether they were going to resolve or not. Once it looked like I finally had found what works for me here and was impressed by Lex's journal, I felt like I should return the favor to this forum as best I could by starting my own journal and thought I might learn some more stuff too from it. It's still possible that my immune system could start to malfunction again even on this diet, which is one reason why I suggest people find what works for them rather than necessarily emulating what I'm doing.

As regards skin color shades, I found a scientific hypothesis proposed independently by multiple respected scientists, found it to have some merit, (though it also raises some questions and requires much more research), so I suggested that it might partly explain why climate and genetics alone (the conventional explanation for skin shade differences) don't seem to explain it (and you rightly added sexual selection--which I agree is also a factor).

You've made pretty clear what you're against. It's what you're for that is still a bit hazy. I cited Sagan in reference to the fact that I didn't witness him expressing hatred or intense anger toward religion, as Dawkins and Hitchens sometimes seem to (I actually prefer to describe it as anger rather than hatred, as the latter seems to imply that I know their inner feelings, though I have seen Hitchens use language as strong as hatred, if not that particular word), and to Sagan's promotion of the scientist's toolkit. Are you referring to those things as regards McCanney, or something else?

In fairness to Dawkins, I've only read a few of his articles and reviews of his books and seen I think one interview of him, and he did seem less angry than Hitchens, so I probably should use more a moderate term for his views on religion, such as "distaste."

I'm not terribly interested in this topic, I was more concerned with the notion of traits such as pale skin supposedly appearing out of nowhere in very recent times. It seems logical to me, based on the archaeological evidence,  that the slow pace of evolution that Darwin promoted is by far the most likely model for the appearance of any genetic trait rather than a sudden, quasi-Creationist-styled appearance.

McCanney appears to be a scientist, as he observed evidence, created a theory to explain it which makes the previously mysterious um, aaah, sort of understandable. It's astrophysics, after all.

Definitely not. Any increase in paleness seems to have occurred at least 80,000 years ago and more than likely far further than that. As I pointed out previously, it's thought that the common ancestor we had with apes appears to have had pale skin.

    Vitamin D (the sunshine vitamin that darkens skin) deficiency and allergy to grains (celiac) go hand in hand.  I wonder if this could be related to a race evolving to have lighter skin.
my little boy is much more darker than me and he needs more sunlight to get enough vit D than me. this is a disadvantage to born in colder country with dark skin.

    Four of us rawsters were chatting tonight.  PaleoPhil said he uses egg yolks for Vitamin D.  Vitamin D is the vitamin that strengthens bones.  Inuit had strong bones, yet they did not expose their skin to the sun.  Vitamin D is in the kind of food we eat here.  There are other tricks to raising and maintaining vitamin D at good level too.  You will learn for your son and teach him.  It's tempting though to go back to a sunnier climate.

yes, my son suffer significant of vit D deficiency. i put him long period of time in the sun (summer) and i give him cod liver oil from whole food and within two months, he gets enough vit D. thanks.

I only eat 2-4 raw eggs per day, so I also consume raw cod liver oil and occasional raw liver, shellfish and fatty fish for vitamin D.

Tyler, have you ever eaten wild clams raw? The shells of the ones in my local market are small--how do you recommend opening them?

I've tried eating raw wild clams, years ago, but it was such a nuisance that I haven't done so since.The clams were just so small that it wasn't worth the bother - normally, for raw mussels I use a metal walnut-cracker, but I couldn't get a grip using it on the clams, so I seem to recall I used a hammer in the end.

Dang, I was afraid of that. Clams are the only wild shellfish sold in my area of landlocked Vermont and they're so small it's hardly worth the bother of buying them even when steaming them--and hammering seems like even more bother than they're worth--although they do taste very good and it does add variety. So for now I steam them just long enough for them to open, hoping I still get some Vit. D and minerals out of it. Since I don't seem to react to cooked foods as badly as you, I think it's a decent compromise until I'm eating more raw liver.

What do you think about the claims that one shouldn't eat raw shellfish that doesn't open when steamed (there are usually a couple of clams that don't open in my batches)?

It's a VERY common practice when cooking mollusks. The belief is the ones that didn't open up were dead before cooking and might hold pathogens from decay. ;)

Yes, every cooking show I saw in the past that covered shellfish said the same thing--don't eat the ones that don't open, and people have told me this in person too. It's an extremely common belief, as djr indicated. I'm guessing it's based more on fear than reality.

Now that I have the fermented cod liver oil I don't think I'll bother with those little wild clams any more anyway, which means no shellfish for me, because they are the only wild shellfish offered here.

    Are there no oysters, scallops or mussels?  Healing value they're supposedly at least as good as wild.  The bivalve's nervous system is different than other animals, oysters especially.  When stressed in an oyster bed far they make dopamine which can be helpful to people.  I've been avoiding scallops, as I don't get them myself in the water, and I read that formaldehyde is added to them to keep them fresh for market.

I'm skeptical of any claims that farmed seafood is "at least as good as wild," just as I'm skeptical that conventional beef is at least as good as 100% grass-fed or that cooked meats are just as good as raw--all claims that are frequently made but which my experience and research doesn't seem to support. I also can't see myself paying high prices (much of the weight you're paying for with shellfish is the shells--so the cost of the actual meat is much more than the listed price/lb) for seafood that is fed crap. If I'm going to pay a lot, I want to get top quality. Plus, some types of fish farming are damaging to the environment (though I haven't heard that re" mussels).

Does anyone know the vitamin D levels of farmed mussels or wild scallops? Nutritiondata just has a "missing or incomplete" listing for that nutrient for both. If farmed mussels have significant vitamin D and I get ambitious maybe I'll ask the market what the source of the mussels is so I can try to contact them and find out what they feed them and whether it's an environmentally-friendly operation.

I'm not fond of the taste of scallops, but if wild ones have significant vitamin D I'll try them in case they taste better than farmed.

Farmed bivalves eat the same diet as wild ones. 

Most scallops are treated with sodium metabisulfite, NOT FORMALDEHYDE. LOL

However, you can get the untreated ones from Whole Foods stores, and probably from some fishmongers.   I eat about 2/5 of a pound of scallops every day, and they keep me calm, and keep my teeth in good shape.  I have noticed that my teeth feel noticeably better when I eat the untreated scallops, than when I eat the treated ones.  That sodium metabisulfite must mess with mineral uptake or something. I don't know.

Cherimoya is correct, farmed bivalves merely filter nutrients from the surroundind ocean-water so it's probably not much different between farmed and wild. That said, I'm sure location is everything, and wildcaught shellfish in far-out(less polluted?) waters would be more nutritious than any farmed shellfish within caged, polluted  areas or whatever.

My own personal experience has been mixed. The raw shellfish, including oysters and mussels, I get from 1 specific fishmonger's at a farmers' market are always of incredibly high quality whereas the mussels I get from supermarkets and other fishmongers are often much smaller and less tasty|(and the shells of the latter mussels was always very thin and broke easily). The fishmonger I mainly buy from said that this was because he practised ethical fishing(ie he refused to  fish outside the correct harvesting season for those creatures, so that that was why the size of his oysters etc. was far larger).

Have you checked the usda nutrient database, it's great as, unlike other sites,they have checked the nutrient-profiles of some raw wild game as well as the usual grainfed meat crap.

The raw scallops I've gotten in the past from numerous sources have always been free of chemicals(well, outside the supermarkets, that is). I'm particularly sensitive to any chemicals found in raw seafood, so I'm sure I would notice if there had been.

Interesting to hear about this steaming issue with bivalves. I'd never heard of it before, I suppose because my family didn't usually cook shellfish at home and would routinely enthuse about the superior benefits of raw oysters over cooked - the only rule I ever heard of was the one about never eating raw shellfish during months with an "r" in them.

Yes, of course, that's what I meant(ie not eating during summer).

    Does it depend on how cold or warm a climate you live in?  I distinctly remember eating live clams and live oysters in the heat of Summer, and by doing so, making a marked improvement in the state of the health of my body.

Farmed bivalves eat the same diet as wild ones. 

Most scallops are treated with sodium metabisulfite ...  I have noticed that my teeth feel noticeably better when I eat the untreated scallops, than when I eat the treated ones.  That sodium metabisulfite must mess with mineral uptake or something.

    Thank you.  How do you know when sodium metabisulfite is not used?  At the WFM by me (the only place I can find even remotely fresh fish) they seem to have no idea about anything.  Their (raw fresh not previously frozen) scallops always smelled bad to me, but when I ate them it did not affect my health adversely and seemed to be good for me.

Well, the governments tend to think so. When they tried to force the pasteurisation of raw oysters in Florida, they were only going to apply that law  to raw oysters caught in the Gulf of Mexico and even then only during the summer months. Personally, I don't think it matters as I've had plenty of success with raw shellfish throughout the summer. I've heard of side-effects from people eating raw shellfish infected by the "red-tide" phenomenon but it's so rare as to not be considered a serious threat.

    I think it may be pollution.  I think the gulf of Mexico is very badly polluted.  I think it's more polluted in Summer, when humans may get more active in the water.  Personally I have eaten oysters from the gulf of Mexico.  The fish monger I bought them from there called the oysters raw, unpasteurized and fresh.  I got sick after I ate them, and the sickness lasted a while.  I doubt what I had was detox.  It was scary.  It wasn't Summer either, but just before Spring and the weather was warm and nice.  I have a friend who eats all kinds of raw animal meat who also only got sick from gulf of Mexico seafood (a totally different time).

..and there`s so lightly fat in my diet, which causes constipation and dry skin.

Luckily, my cold-intolerance has decreased much - since I started to eat plenty of high-meat !

IMO, very hard frost is easier to tolerate than humid weather around zero celsius, which "goes directly to the bones".

It was -1C today, we have a heat wave.
Freezing rain and ice pellets forecast for tomorrow with a high of -2C, so I can't drive the 100 miles to a family dinner. I will not miss the (censored) turkey, but will miss the company.

I don't know if I mentioned this before, but when I spent winters in the Canadian high Arctic, nobody ever got sick - not even a cold unless someone came in from the South. Everybody ate a lot.
I'm cold-tolerant now because of all the pemmican I eat. IMHO

In fact, high-meat (moose) will be my main source of meat for this spring.

I`ll prepare 20kg of fresh moose to higher level soon..  :) My daily dose is about 500g (fair 1 pound)
