Title: Is exercise useless???
Post by: kurite on March 31, 2010, 06:33:52 pm
Hey just wondering...On a SAD diet exercise is essential. It burns off all of that unhealthy fat accumulated in your body and your body detoxs through sweating. But when on a raw paleo diet essentially your toxin load is minimal to none. So is there any reason to exercise unless you want to be fit? In all reality aren't you just breaking down your body which in turn your body must stress itself to repair. Not only that but free radicals are created. Any thoughts on this? Is there something im missing?
thanks

Your theory is stupid.

Exercise is vital for energy, health and happiness.

Depends on what you call exercise. In my opinion some movement is useful in order to keep the lymph flowing (since it does not have a pump, like the blood has).

Exercise requirements are different for each person and how to determine the level of activity required is a more interesting question.

Way to give lots of info disproving my theory.

Depends on what you want - if that is a body like a Greek God, then better exercise.
If you just want to live in good health, it's a good idea to get out of bed once in a while so you don't forget how to walk.
There have been people in comas who lived for years, no problems.

This is part of my point though. Does your body even need to filter as much due to improved immune system?

There have been a number of recent studies done showing the importance of exercise. 1 of them, as I recall, involved 70+ year old men  doing extensive weight-lifting and thereby getting the kind of  muscle-mass normally associated with people 3-4 decades younger. Given that weaker bones and weaker muscle-mass are directly associated with a higher degree of mortality(due to increased chance of falling etc.), it follows that doing high levels of exercise is just as important as eating raw, high-quality foods.

Secondly, studies done on bones of Cro-Magnon people in palaeo times show that, due to their vast daily exercise-levels, they had bones (and by implication muscles) which were at least as strong, if not better, than those of modern Olympic athletes.

I'll get the links to those studies mentioned above and  post them on rawpaleodiet.com eventually, too lazy right now.

Okay,  I have to WANT to have a body like a greek god to give me an incentive to exercise.  I have to admit I'm as lazy as Lex.  I'd rather tinker with my servers.

A great diet can make you feel great but, like anything in life, to get the most from it you need to have your body running the best it can be which does require some anerobic exercise. It doesn't need to be a structured thing but you need to really push yourself doing something strenuous at least once a week IMO.
I've recently rediscovered this fact with the clear difference in how I feel between the aerobic cycling I was doing over the winter on a stationary bike and the anaerobic HIT-like jogging/sprinting I did Thursday morning. It's why I'm going back out again this morning.

Have you tried doing it ? There's a rule: do something for 21 days and it becomes a habit!
I remember a study about exercise and success. Most successful were those who also exercised. So I will try to use the 21 day rule and make exercise as a habit.

Exercise is definitely not useless. In fact I'd be hard pressed to come up with anything truly useless.

On a more descriptive level, parts of your body like joints do not receive nourishment unless you move them. They don't have an arterial system like your muscles and organs do. Also there are a lot of brain chemicals associated with exercise. If you believe at all in a paleolithic perspective on health then imo you would have to say that the human body is designed to be used, not preserved and kept from work.

On a personal note I feel a lot better after working out. I come home from the gym and on a certain level I'm tired and beat up, but on another level other problems in my life seem more manageable and my mood is better. To me it couldn't be more obvious what the benefits are.

btw I don't lift weights much or anything like that, I train in Brazilian jui jit su. It's fun. There are tons of fun things you can do and get just as good or better workout then a traditional gym weight lifting or cardio routine. Dancing, some martial arts, mountain climbing (depending on your geography), swimming, canoeing/kayaking. Then there's team sports that you might be able to find an outlet for.

I was going to say the same thing earlier,

the problem is the word choices. I think there are some that would claim 'working out' regularly, is unnecessarily to maintain a healthy, fit physique, to heal, or to lose weight. I remain somewhat skeptical on those but I don't think anyone would claim 'exercise' to be useless for even the most healthy non-toxic diet or being. Being fit, is interchangeable with being healthy. If you don't have the fitness level to do basic exercise, than you arn't healthy. Notice even Aajonus who doesn't believe in exercise still has the fitness to go on hikes or go rowing or whatever. You might not need to do any type of regular exercise program, or choose load bearing exercise to be fit (for instance children are usually naturally fit, or they used to be), but exercise can useful for people with poor OR healthy diets, in just basic stuff, like lymph, bone health, mood, stress, and sleep

Just to let everyone know Im not against exercise at all... I do plenty of it, I play tennis 10+ hours a week and workout about 8 hours a week. I am more interested in what the benefits of it are besides getting fit.

I feel the same way after a workout.

Kurite,
I know exercising can seem time consuming, difficult, and even painful at first, but lets consider what our bodies were designed for.  Just as our bodies are genetically adapted to a certain kind of diet(Paleo) over 2.5 million years, so are they are adapted to vigorous exercise. With the advent of agriculture and animal husbandry over the past 10000 years(a mere tick of the clock in terms of human evolution), we have become less physically active since food has become so easy to acquire. The consequences of depriving the body of vigorous exercise(not moderate) is the same as eating foods that it is not designed to process. Both will result in undesirable consequences.

My 2 cents: The body was designed to move, move, move....
