Title: Extremely Dry Mouth When Waking Up In The Morning
Post by: magnetic on March 04, 2011, 10:18:46 pm
For the past few weeks my oral cavity has been extremely dry when waking up in the morning.  The tongue, roof and throat are all bone dry.  I could be dehydrated, but I think it is unlikely as I consume quite a bit of water.  I don't measure the water but I drink at least the equivalent of 3 20oz. bottles, sometimes more.

I have been eating on a pattern of about 90% raw meat some days (including organs, had liver for the first time raw the other day) and other days I eat raw fruits and cheese or buttermilk for most of my meals, with maybe one meal of raw meat.  I eat 3 meals a day, usually 7am, noon and 6:30pm or thereabouts.  Some days I eat a large amount of fruit in the morning and then eat meat the rest of the day.  My foods are raw lamb, cheese, buttermilk, very small amount of nuts (walnuts, pumpkin seeds and sunflower seeds), butter, olive oil, coconut oil, bananas, apples, oranges, grapes, pears, melon.

Should I just drink more water?  I hate forcing myself to drink water when I am not thirsty.

I don't believe in plain water.
I'd rather eat water melon, open a coconut, eat a refreshing fruit.
If you have none of those then squeeze a lemon or an orange in home distilled water to add minerals and absorbability to the water.  Let the lemon juice stay for 2 minutes before drinking.

Then tell us your experience, if that practice made you feel better.

I have considered my water source, which is plain city tap water.  Unfortunately, I cannot obtain good mineral water here (I live at the center of a nutritional black hole).  I am saving up to purchase a reverse osmosis water filter, but until then I am stuck with flouridated city water.

I always intensely disliked fruit-flavored water.  I suppose I could try sucking on a lemon and chasing it with some water.

absolutely do not have any sugary drinks and fruits before you go to bed.  it'll destroy your teeth.

i have very dry mouth in the morning as well despite sleeping with closed mouth.  and i am not dehydrated.
i do not know what is causing this.  my saliva flow is normal during the day.

Yes, it normalizes pretty quickly.  My last meal is always a simple meal of raw meat and fat, around 7pm at the latest.  Then I go to sleep several hours later.  Any fruit consumption is in the morning or afternoon.

I get plenty of sleep, about 8.5 to 9 hours lately.  No alarm clock or lights, the room is very dark.

i haved this too sometimes. and i believe it correlates with dry skin in many cases. this phenomenon is most commonly seen in people over 50 y/o. so i believe it is degenerative in many cases. overall, carbs have helped me with this problem in the past.  right now, im on VLC and i have noticed the dryness is quite prominent. ZC/VLC is dehydrating for many folks.

i have thought that when this dryness is hapenning my body is detoxifying through diuresis.  so perhaps one must eliminate some particular food, ie  dairy, cooked foods, etc.

on the other hand, perhaps the dryness is happening because of a deficiency or lack of balance. if something is missing, then"cooler" foods such as veggies, fruits IMO are lacking.

Drinking water usually doesn't help.

Are you eating high amounts of 'heavy' animal fats from beef and lamb? If I eat TOO MUCH of the relatively hard lamb fat I get the same dehydration symptoms like you. 'Too much' means more than my body can handle.

My piss is really yellow.  I am only 31 years of age, so I don't know about the age factor.  I do take Omega-3 supplements, along with a B Complex, a C Complex, Vitamin E and CoQ10.  But the doses are pretty low and are only meant to make up for deficiency due to years on a SAD, not to be taken indefinitely.

I will experiment with different foods, eliminating dairy, and so on, and see if their is any difference.  It is only mildly annoying but I don't want to ignore it completely as my body might be telling me something.

I don't know what you mean by "heavy" animal fats, there is a good amount of fat on the meat, but the butcher did trim off most off it, though they saved the trimmings for me.  I do not think I am getting a large amount of fat in terms of calories or energy.

My lamb is going to run out soon so I am going to be eating mostly grass-fed beef from the farmer's market, it is the only grass-fed RAF available without ordering from the farm, which is getting difficult (waiting lists and all that, 4 hour drive).  But I have my lamb fat to add to the ground beef.

I really need to start hunting and fishing.

See of cutting out the dairy works for you, also try adding in raw carbs.

I remember when I first started eating large amounts of animal fat in place of carbs, my mouth was extremely dry and I was exhausted in the mornings. I eventually adapted to using fats for energy, and I don't have these symptoms anymore.

If fat isn't the problem for you, have you thought about the possibility of a mineral imbalance?

Bananas are a good source of raw carbs, right?

Try discarding all supplements for a week and see what that does to you.
Maybe the supplements are causing the imbalance.

Thanks for the suggestion.  I have received a number of suggestions, so I am going to try each on in turn rather than all at once, so I can pinpoint what the problem may be.

eating too late at night, or the equivalent of going to sleep with ample food in the stomach gives some, including myself dry mouth.  Too hungry before bed and you won't be put to sleep by a full belly.  Kind of a balancing act.  Certain mouth cleansing solutions can also tend to dry up or reduce saliva production.  Thus you might try just warm water brushing.

Duly noted, thank you!
