Title: Your fav way to gently heat meat?
Post by: Josh on June 14, 2011, 09:56:54 pm
I've found it hard to gently heat meat without cooking it. I don't really like it cold. A plastic bag under the hot tap works for small pieces of fat or meat, but not really good for a big portion.

What are your favourite ways?

Yeh, but I don't always know what I'm going to eat the next day. Also, sometimes the weather's cold.

warm a pan on the stove, then put the meat in there and cover. You might have to give it a few extra booster shots of heat, but this is much faster than room temp, and probably not as wasteful as running warm water over it.

But like Hit it raw says, as best of advanced planning as you can do helps. Part of that is just getting in the habit of thinking about your meals ahead of time. If you change your mind and have a craving for something else last minute, then you can use the above method. It shouldn't be that big of  deal if you gently cook a bit of the outside, I sear a lot of my meat anyway for the flavor and temp.

Play around with it, you'll find a way that is suitable for you. Eventually you could invest in something that only heats to 100 degrees or so, like a dehydrator.

I might try that. Agree it's not a big deal to sear, but I'm trying to wean myself off the taste of cooked rare meat.

I like my meat cold straight from the refrigerator.
If it was frozen I let them thaw out in the open air.

Depends where you are, if you're in a cold climate I doubt you'd like it cold from the refrigerator :)

Some Innuits do eat frozen raw meat and fat in very cold climate and claim that it warm them up.
I myself do eat cold meat from the refrigerator from time to time in winter and find it very good.

ugh, not me, I'm always after the opposite of the ambient temp, if it's cold out I'm not interested in cold meat, a vice versa, something to do with balance I imagine. Animals do the same thing, when wet they look for a dry spot, when hot for shady spots, when cold they hunt for a warm zone or rock, and so on.

It's not so bad leaving it out an extra day if you don't eat it all. It will just get slightly high or dry out a bit, both of which are OK.

just pop it in a warm pan.. if its sizzling then its too hot. The more care and time you take with it, the more raw it will be, since if you rush it, its going to cook and be cool on the inside still, but if you take your time flipping it, then you can warm it up and keep it like 95% raw.

There is no prizes for eating cold meat. Actually im pretty sure its a 'thing' where they say that drinking cold liquids is not good for you, so i dont see why eating cold foods would be good.

Cold meat from the fridge isnt paleo!!(haha)  actually, is living in freezing temps paleo? i dont know.

The pan method works well. It really brings it to life for me to have it a bit warm and brings out the flavour.

High will be fine eventually, but I don't know if I'm going to cook it a bit yet...and the idea of cooked high meat seems a bit nasty.

I'm getting closer to being raw yeah yeah yeah.

I used to warm my meat to room temperature to like the meat.
But on my 2 year mark on raw my taste buds switched and liked straight from the ref meat.

I like my meat either cold from the fridge or room temp. I eat my lamb fat partly frozen, I like the ice cream texture.

I use to heat it a little in the oven , but I finally got tired over warming my dinner plates and finnaly settled on eatting cold meat. Its more refreshing in the summertime anyway.

doesn't eating cold food harm digestive flora? it seems unusual that an animal that you would usually tear into would be the temperature of your fridge. i believe it might do more harm than good in the long run. just sayin...

Not really
Wolves and other cold climate predators eat year round. A kill will quickly get cold in the winter and yet they don't have any issues eating cold meat, so why should we.

I wasn't going to comment on this thread because, at first, I thought, "I don't gently heat my meat." Then I realized that cold meat does get gently heated while I am chewing it. I don't cut meat into bite-sized pieces unless I am eating in front of well-bred company. Instead, I gnaw on it. That warms it up.

Normally I dislike cooked meat and it makes me sick. The only heated way I have tolerated it was "sauteed"  gently in water.
