Title: Too Much Organ Meat?
Post by: zeno on June 18, 2011, 09:10:30 am
I just bought more than 15 pounds of beef liver. Rather then eating a blend of muscle meat and organ meat, I was thinking about trying to eat straight liver (with some added fat).

Does this sound like a poor idea?

My body may become sick of liver which will be a good indicator of whether this is a good idea or not. But before I get to that point I wanted to ask for input.

Yep, there is a point where it's too much. My dog had always loved liver until I started feeding her only that for a while. Once her body decided it had enough, she wouldn't touch the stuff until I got her back on fat and muscle meats. Then she would take only so much liver, until she would decide she had enough. It is a superfood for sure, but a recurring theme in life is balance and this is no exception. Just listen to your body and quit when it's not appetizing anymore. It's strong stuff though and will do your body loads of good!

I am a regular liver eater, but I can only eat so much and then I'm done. I buy lamb's liver because it's a more manageable amount (one liver is about 2 pounds or less). I keep it in the refrigerator on a plate so the uneaten portion dries on the surface. It lasts over a week, and it always seems fine. I eat it with egg yolks.

Thanks for the input.

I should have gone with the golden rule: moderation.  ;D

Hmm...now I have to figure out what to do with 15 pounds of liver!  -\

That's true.
When I eat only organ-meats for some longer period of time then I'm done and I desperately crave for muscle-meats. I can stay without the liver for month or two without any problems. I've got so many nutrients with my food :)

Be careful of vitamin A toxicity btw, liver has quite a lot of vitamin A.

Eat until your body is tired of it.

Thank you for the reminder! :)

Hopefully this thread will enlighten people of the necessary precaution when eating organ meats.

Irrelevant, actually, unless you are eating the livers of arctic animals.

Here's more about the polar animals: http://animals.howstuffworks.com/mammals/eat-polar-bear-liver.htm
Quote
a healthy human liver contains 575 international units (IU) of vitamin A per gram while a polar bear's liver contains between 24,000 and 35,000 IU per gram [source: Eliasen]. Compare that to the tolerable upper level of vitamin A intake for a healthy adult human: 10,000 IU [source: Higdon].

Beef liver still has 30,000 IU per 3 ounces, not that irrelevant when the tolerable upper level is 10,000 IU and you have 15 pounds of it. You may not get the extreme health problems as those arctic explorers, but better be safe than sorry.

Power we have a natural 'stop' for liver.

Yeah too bad that stop didn't work so well for some of those arctic explorers..
I guess by the first bite of polar bear liver you're already overdosed.

I eat 100+ grams of liver for 4-5 consecutive days then take 1-2 week breaks.  I have never noticed any signs of toxic overdose.

Ok, liver may not be eaten on daily bases.

Next question is what about other organ's like:

1. Heart
2. Kidney

3. Bone Marrow
4. Brain

5. Suet
(could it be eaten every day in big ammount? Could it be considered as complete food, or one has to eat it as suppliment along with muscle meat?)

Suet is 94% fat and not that rich in micro-nutrients per calorie so it's far from being a complete food. You need at least some protein foods in addition to suet.

Those organs are quite safe but still, don't overeat them. For example 100 grams of beef kidney has 140mcg selenium. The recommendation is around 50mcg and the upper tolerable level for selenium is set to 400mcg, if you take more than that you risk selenosis.

Well my wife and I eat organs and suet. Around 4 pounds of liver a week(each) id say.. she probably eats a bit more than i do, but we're not turning orange yet after months.  When you've had enough liver, you dont want it anymore (which isnt much help if you aren't really keen on it in the first place, but hey..)  We will eat just liver for 2-3 days while its fresh and best, then pick up our next liver the next week, so we pack back a whole bunch, then move onto our kidneys and hearts etc. and if we eat all our organs before they send in the next cow, THEN we pick up some muscle meats.

My wife eats lots of suet and she does fine on it, I personally dont find i digest suet as well, but it might be because i eat all kinds of omnivorous stuff on top of my meat(while she's carnivore).

I dont think you have to worry about 'Overdosing' on anything that you're picking up from the butchers. I would think that you will just not want to eat it anymore,  long before you develop leprosy.

Although my wife had a similar experience eating a big whack of moose brain, to when she eats too much adrenal. So we figure she must have eaten the hormone glands in the brain and they sometimes make you feel like you're tripping balls and you dont know if you're going to throw up or shit yourself.

Please confirm the following once again:

1. Your wife is practically eating ONLY Organ Meat throughout a week. Muscle meat is eaten only in case there is no organ meat there.

- But what about fish? Does she also eat fish?

- Does she eat liver & other organs meat in same way, or she use different recipes/ways to eat them? (while eating same thing again and again may be some times boring).
