Title: Hog fat
Post by: sabertooth on July 14, 2011, 09:00:46 am
My butcher is on vacation until the 1st of august and the whole foods refuses to sell me fat trimmings and I am down to about two days worth of fat trimming.

Times are tough. Anyway I contacted a farm that has pasture hog fat for one dollar a pound. I guess I will try it out, it must be better than going through rabbit starvation. I have to decide soon, and unless I can locate any other source of beef fat I will be getting the hog fat this weekend.

Anyone have experience with pasture raised hog fat?

Excellent sounding price.  Wonderful source of vitamin D.  Rabbit starvation causes headache before death.  I'd choose the fat.  I don't like beef fat anyway.

I am fond of lamb fat, but my butcher who gave me all the free fat I wanted is still on vacation, so I have been using cow fat as an emergency source. I guess while the butcher is still gone I could use it as an opportunity to seek alternative sources of fat.

Hopefully this hog fat works out for me.

Us rabbits don't starve as easily because we can even eat tree bark.  :P

But seriously Sabertooth - can you order it frozen on-line? Do you have any farmer's markets near you? I was able to get some excellent rendered hog fat at the one near me.... maybe something like that can tide you over?

I got the hog fat and its alright as far as good clean tasting, and its really soft and creamy textured.

Perhaps its just mental conditioning against swine in general, but I still like my lamb fat better.

Hopefully it shouldn't be much longer until I get my unlimited lamb fat back.
