Title: Grey chicken liver
Post by: aLptHW4k4y on January 29, 2012, 08:13:32 pm
I have some completely grey chicken liver, do you think this is ok to eat?
I bought it like this, only two livers are grey the others look normal.

I'll venture a guess that you got a batch of chicken livers that didn't come from chickens who were fed their natural diet. A lot of places here label their chicken meat as natural, free-range, cage-free, or organic. All this means in my mind is that the chickens are outside on bare dirt and get thrown organically-raised chicken scratch with corn and soy.

Yes that's possible. This one is organic but I'm not sure if it's free-range.
I threw it away, but I'm still curious as to why would liver become grey. Somewhere I read it's possibly because of oxidation.

I would NEVER eat chicken liver, unless I could verify MYSELF what those chickens are fed daily.  Chickens are usually just grainfed, even the "free-range" ones.  I've had definite negative results from chicken livers, and I feel sure it's a direct result of their diet.  No other species' liver has given me problems.

Ok thanks for the warning. The reason I'm eating chicken liver (I rotate it with beef liver) is because it seems to have a more balanced micronutrient content. 100g of beef liver has like 1000% of the RDA for copper for example, and I'm hesitant to get so much minerals.
