Highly variable - sometimes the pages load in a blink, other times the "waiting for www.rawpaleodietforum.com (http://www.rawpaleodietforum.com)" lasts 10 seconds or longer.

I did some web server optimizing settings.
I also made some SMF forum optimization settings, notice the avatar slow loading problem should go away.
Also adjusted topics to show 25 posts per page before clicking to the next page.

this new dedicated machine just froze on me.

I haven't figured out what happened.

Will have to test it longer.

I'm experiencing long stretches of no access, too. The old server was not agonizingly slow.

Why do these bugs happen every now and then  to the various forums I've visited in the past? Is it always hackers being stupid or just that modern technology is still way too primitive?

I have a new server. i7-3770 ivy bridge, 32 GB memory, 2 x 3TB hard drives.
The processor is cutting edge too new.
The Linux OS I installed is Ubuntu 12.04.1 and it seems to be flaky with it.
I upgraded Ubuntu to the latest edition and will hope it settles the matter.

If it still freezes once or twice... I will replace ubuntu 12.04.1 with CentOS 6.3

Which is a good amount of labor.  So I hope the ubuntu 12.04.1 latest upgrade holds.

That's the base operating system.  We are using Oracle Virtualbox for the virtualization. The actual web server runs on a virtual machine using ubuntu 10.04 which is stable.  The mysql database is mysql 5.5 on the ubuntu server itself.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.04 on the same CPU (i7-3770K), haven't had any problems.
I'd suggest you Debian if possible, I'm only running Ubuntu because that's the only thing I managed to install with this new UEFI BIOS.

Debian 6.x was my first choice but the freezing was a lot worse in my other i7 3770 servers, some 4x a day.

Before this last ubuntu upgrade, the freezing was some 3 plus days.  But i have a similar ubuntu 12 thats stable in another setup.

The ones with centos 6.3 are rock solid so far.  Even if i had to add the mod to use JFS for my file system.

The ubuntu 12s use ext4.

Its a quirk with the ext 4 bug that virtualbox complains about if you use ext 4 and your kernel is below 3.

Seems this latest ubuntu 12.04.1 is holding up for the moment.

Couldn't access rawpaleoforum at all, last night.
Title: Re: New server. Supposed to be faster. Feedback please.
Post by: goodsamaritan on October 16, 2012, 10:35:05 pm
Yes, it happened during my sleeping time.
I then upgraded Ubuntu 12.04.1 to the latest kernel now at Linux version 3.2.0-32 with ext-4

If it freezes again, that will be the last straw.
And I will have to next change to CentOS 6.3 with JFS

Note that this forum is piggy backing on a customer's mission critical email server that handles some 600+ email addresses.

I can't access rawpaleoforum with Comodo Dragon. After about a week of trying I decided to try Firefox and it worked.

FEEDBACK: "Show unread posts since last visit" works differently than it used to.

Old way: All unread posts were listed until I read them, even if I closed the browser and returned later.

New way that I do not like: If I click "Show unread posts since last visit," the list of unread posts is displayed. Then, if I close the browser window and come back later to read more of the unread posts, the refreshed list does not display the posts that were previously listed but still unread.

Can the old way be restored?

This server is screwed.
I'm moving out my virtual machines to the backup machines.
I am reformatting this server and hopefully it comes out better.
In the meantime, in the next few hours I am reinstalling... so this server will be on and off.

I just reinstalled this machine with CentOS 6.3 as the base OS.
Hoping for a more stable experience.
Will have to proceed to tweaking in the next few hours.

------

lost a night of sleep with this thing.  Goodbye Ubuntu 12.04.1

Now this rawpaleodietforum.com should be ultimately faster.

I have separated physically the database to a separate dedicated server.

So the website server is still in the same server.

Speed has always been good here, however...

I was using a http://www.rawpaleoforum.com (http://www.rawpaleoforum.com) link, and got this:
"If you feel you have reached this page in error, please contact the web site owner:
webmaster@rawpaleoforum.com
It may be possible to restore access to this site by following these instructions for clearing your dns cache."
3 browsers and torbrowser all got the same result.

So I made a new link to http://www.rawpaleodietforum.com (http://www.rawpaleodietforum.com) and all is well.

The shared host server which was supposed to be fast became buggy when they moved.
Sigh.
Moved us back to my 2 dedicated servers which means we are back at full power.
Hope back to this dedicated machine works best.

Changed the time period showing who was online for the past 60 minutes instead of 1440 minutes.  This is supposed to speed up our forum.

http://www.rawpaleodietforum.com/who/ (http://www.rawpaleodietforum.com/who/) shows we have lots of guests reading and not registering.

We were flaky for a day or two because someone sent an attack specifically to the front page of www.rawpaleodietforum.com (http://www.rawpaleodietforum.com) , some Chinese IP.
Offending IP was 123.151.148.201.  DOS http type every second or more.

DENIAL OF SERVICE (DOS)

Drug company? Vegans? Those who failed at rpd?

Feedback: yes, flaky for a few days, as in "server not responding, try later."

That's not happening today.

There have been a few times trying to access from my phone that it said "server not available"

Most slowness on my phone is from my phone haha

On my computer, things seem smooth like any other site.

i seem to experience multiple "problems", whether with page loading speeds, site accessibility, or functions on a fairly regular basis.

i tend to blame the older computer, my reluctance to update my browser, or the public access dsl web connection i use.  if you say the server is faster, since it is most likely not the slowest part of the equation...  i guess i believe you.

i finally managed to completely remove the iq updater from my computer (a difficult process, third party malware attached to itunes downloaded by previous owner.  i have no use for itunes), and also located and removed three additional viruses not picked up by macafee, or microsoft.  i am hoping these recent changes help with overall reliability.  computers just seem to be an ongoing hassle...  oh, carrier pidgeon, where have you gone?     ;)

Vegans are rarely organized enough.  Drug company, maybe.  I doubt it's someone who failed at the diet. They know we are sincere, and are interested in truth, not dogma, and are more-or-less sympathetic to our cause.

We were down while I was asleep.
Thanks CK for sending a message on FB.
Seems this time there was a bad crawler called Magpie Crawler operated by Brandwatch.
I've seen this before a few days ago.
I have firewalled out their IP.

The DOS continued with the bad bad guy using a different IP.

Which I firewalled out just now.

Now I can see we are such a TRUTHER website we've pissed off some one or some people who are just TRUTH HATERS.

Amazing how a sleepy seeming far fetched "raw paleo diet forum" can elicit an attack.

We must be getting too popular.

whatever happened to the concept of allowing everyone to have their own opinion, without fear of persecution?  these "bad guys" should get a life...

...outside of ours.

i don't understand all the computer jargon you've posted in this thread, and whether or not it's critical info...  but maybe posting less information about how your site runs, would make it more difficult to be "attacked"?

btw, i've been able to log on, in the first attempt recently...  not sure if it's related to what you've done lately, but it's better now for me!

The vegans have been trolling us on and off for years.  My relentless bannings have finally gotten them to stop trolling (my member title is for real), but I guess they think paying some Chinese kid a few dollars to try DOS attacks is going to accomplish something.

I have news. They aren't going to stop ANYTHING. Worst case scenario is that we move ourselves back to our old yahoo group, which is still active, and just put a forwarding link to that group on this homepage.  It won't come to that, though, I'm pretty sure.

not trying to "plug" this tool here, but i found this free, trial version of something called revo uninstaller...  i was able to get rid of all the crap programs and downloads on the computer, turn off things that ran automatically during startup and operation, removed junk files, unused files, and deleted items (most of which was leftover from the previous owner), and organize how the laptop runs...  got back over 8gb of memory / space (which is a lot, considering there's only 65gb), things are running super fast and smooth without changing my browser...  i can log onto this forum on the first try now, page loads are effortless and quick, things seem great!  i think i can almost keep up with the new server now...
