Title: Pole fitness
Post by: sabertooth on October 03, 2012, 11:43:51 am
On my journey I have learned many disciplines. Martial arts, contact sports, rock climbing, yoga, sheep wrangling etc.

Now I am training to pole dance twice a week at an alternative fitness studio. Those girls who teach the class are in great shape :). Its complete workout with a great view.

That looks great! Great back!

Hey, have you ever checked out mallakhamb, Indian pole gymnastics, done on a pole or rope? There are lots of youtube videos  with demonstrations.

@sabertooth - this looks like it could be a lot of fun, I'll have to give it a go  :)

We recently had a local pole dancer do very well on a TV talent show:

Turns out Karry Summers has local pole fitness classes, and also some that looks really useful called anti-gravity yoga, reckon I'll book into this first to build up strength and settle my mind -

AntiGravity® Yoga "Cocooning" is featured on Good Morning America - August 2011 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iB9YFlOVe2E#ws)

I highly endorse pole dance as a form of exercise... Of course, I kinda do it for a living so I'm a big fan of it.

Few shots from work.

That was a BEAUTIFUL dance performance Saber!

It's hard to believe that you have been doing it such a short time. Wasn't it just months ago that you started? I would have suspected that it would usually take a good many years to learn to do what you did there.

Did you make up the choreography yourself?

Very impressing! You're strong and agile as monkeys and apes, plus the human sense of harmony!  8)

Seems to hurt at times though, as Jessica noticed.

Ha ha Saber - people are commenting on your facial expression. A dancer can be concentrating so hard on those almost impossible body moves that they can forget to monitor what their faces are doing. I saw the grimaces as you having to keep extreme concentration on holding your body in such unnatural positions that need so much strength so that naturally it made you contract your face in such a manner but such facial contractions can be interpreted as pain and elicit emotional responses you don't want from your audience - which is something that I'd imagine you would learn to control more over time with practice. A calm sultry look on the face or a smile might be something you could add to your practice sessions - especially during the most intense moves. What you did above seemed almost impossible to me let alone smiling through it - but if you could do the above amazing feats, I bet you could add a smile too.  :D  Btw - I think one of the moves I liked the most in the performance was that crouching down into a squat looking at the pole almost like prey and then springing onto it like a cat. That was really cool.  8)

wow, that's still really super awkward for me to watch

but I think it does a good job of demonstrating how much more strength and flexibilty you have gained, enough to be very graceful and agile, great work!

That's great, sabertooth! I never saw pole dancing until you posted your first video, and I can see the improvement in the smoothness of your technique from then to now.

Sabertooth, it is impressive indeed and I can see that why pole is a good choice to work out. But I m not sure about myself doing that dance. Only if I had so much money, then I could give a try
