Splendid post. Michael Pollan wrote a piece for the New Yorker some months back along the same lines: The Intelligent Plant (http://www.newyorker.com/magazine/2013/12/23/the-intelligent-plant). Amazing stuff!

Vegetarians and vegans have long brandished ethical arguments against eating animals due to the animals' sentience. It appears to me that science is moving swiftly down a path that will acknowledge that plants are every bit as sentient as animals, they just express that sentience in very different ways.
