Primal Diet / Re: Eggs- women vs men
« on: March 24, 2009, 11:52:02 am »
OK, thanks... maybe I'll just try the yolk next time.
I thought Dr Mercola was on to something when he said his female patients have a harder time eating the raw eggs than the male ones.  Perhaps women are more susceptible to social conditioning for some reason?  When talking to men about switching to eating all raw, I find that men seem to have an easier time transitioning... perhaps it's just the women and men I've spoken to, and not reflective of the population at large.

Primal Diet / Eggs- women vs men

For those of you who eat raw eggs rocky-style (or who have eaten eggs this way), do the men find them more palatable than women?  For some reason I still cannot eat the eggs rocky-style-- I gag every time.  I'm still blending them into shakes (which I know changes their structure, etc, but it's the best I can do now).  I don't know if people are familiar with Dr. Mercola... he recommends eating similar to Weston-Price style.  In his practice he says he has noticed that women have more trouble eating the raw eggs rocky-style than men.  Just wondering if others find this to be true as well and any suggestions for overcoming my reflex.

Thanks Tyler!  I actually went to one of Aajonus' lectures recently and spoke to a couple people.  Unfortunately most people live an hour or more outside of the city, so it's not very convenient for meeting up.  Also, even though I'm only just easing my way into this way of eating, I was more experienced than a lot of people who attended.  Most hadn't eaten raw meat.

I am part of a co-op where I can get raw milk, veggie juice, and meat on occasion.  I picked up a carpaccio from the co-op (a woman in IL sells ceviches and carpaccio in accordance with Aajonus' diet) and when someone mentioned I eat raw meat, there was a gasp from a couple people picking up their milk.  It didn't really bother me and I found it kind of amusing, but even at a raw dairy co-op I can't seem to find people who are open-minded enough to try this out.

Ah well, I shall endure.

Maybe I will move to the west coast  =)

Any of you in or around Chicago?  Would love to eat meat with others.  Because I'm a newbie, still a little nervous about trying certain varieties of meats... if I eat it with someone else, might be more comfortable taking the plunge.  Also want to exchange tips on local farmers' markets, etc.

Hey Bluesky,
My Dr thought I had pcos (turns out she now thinks I don't)... but I definitely have insulin-resistance related symptoms too.  I don't know if you would need to go full out on the no-carb... but maybe a low carb like a lot of the raw meaters on this site do would help.  You could play with it a bit because everyone's body is different and will respond differently... maybe you can have more fruit than others, etc.

Don't know if the hairs can ever go away (showing my ignorance about terminal vs vellus)... but maybe they'll stop growing as quickly?  If that's the case, there's always hair removal and then slow growth back (so you're not dealing with it all the time/as often).

If you have an email address I'd be happy to talk to you more about this!

Hey Iceman,
thanks for the reply (and the humor   :D)

Would it be too much of a pain for you to be really specific about the cleanses:
ie- parasite flush, lasted 3 days, ate 1 clove of garlic every 3 hours.  Only other food was raw meat or veggie juice twice a day, etc.

I can find info on cleanses online, but it's nice when you can talk to someone on the forum who has actually done them and the specifics he/she used.

Thanks!  (hope I didn't miss this in your previous post.... brain fog still sets in sometimes)

You mentioned you have done parasite and liver cleanses.  Can you give more specifics of your regimen when doing these cleanses?  I've tried candida cleanses before and not really sure they did anything... wondering if you actually had success (ie- quantifiable difference in symptoms... or even seeing parasites coming out of you). I feel a cleanse for me would be beneficial, but not sure I would actually notice a difference...
Thanks for your info in advance!

Primal Diet / Re: Detox from Ground beef?
« on: September 26, 2008, 02:49:15 am »
I believe it was 100% grassfed (I didn't ask about the 100% part because I assumed when the label said grassfed, it meant completely... but I'll check next time).
I ate a little more of the ground beef this morning and no ill effects yet.  But I only ate a little because I just couldn't get it down (I'm still finding the raw meat really unpalatable... the flavor is bland which I'm fine with, but I can't get used to the texture at all... I know it's social conditioning, but I can't seem to shake it).

I don't mix my juices with my meats... but I should probably cut down on the juices.  So many people (even non-primal eaters) seem to have done well with juicing (even though there are obviously plenty who haven't) so I thought I'd give it a try and see how I do with it.

Is there a link discussing the anti-nutrients in vegetable juices?  Have only read a little about that.

Thanks for the feedback!

Primal Diet / Detox from Ground beef?
« on: September 25, 2008, 10:26:16 pm »
So I'm easing my way into the raw meats.  I've mostly been doing fish, but last night I had some ground beef that was grass fed, not previously frozen.  I didn't sleep well last night.  Not sure if this is a detox symptom or not.  Usually I associate crazy dreams/nightmares with detox.  This wasn't really a crazy dream night though... I woke up, felt a little nauseous... it was a feeling I associated with eating bad food before bed.  I thought I was going to get sick... I didn't, I just didn't sleep that well the rest of the night (and felt a little anxious).  I'm not particularly tired today (maybe the raw foods are giving me more energy)... But my stomach doesn't feel great... not bad, just not quite relaxed and in order.
So I'm wondering if this is a detox symptom or possibly if it was bad meat (not sure if people believe in "bad meat"... but there could be some sort of toxin on the meat, right?)... I know it's hard to tell as everyone's detox symptoms will be different.  I have more of the ground meat I'm debating about eating today.  I'm also juicing... some green juice, but also carrot and cucumber.  Perhaps the juicing is what's causing the detox symptoms?

Just wanted to throw this out there and get some opinions... think it's ok to stick with this batch of ground beef?  Are people eating a lot of ground beef and is there a difference between the ground and other cuts?
Thanks!

Primal Diet / Questions from Newbie
« on: July 27, 2008, 11:35:12 am »
Hi all!  I'm new and I've tried a lot of low carb diets before... not for weight but for other health issues (which I believe are all related to insulin resistance problems).  I find it hard to stick to low carb for several reasons (hard socially as all outings seem to include food and I never really kicked my cravings).

I think primal diet might be good for me because from what I've read, the raw meat will really satisfy me and help with the cravings.

I do have some questions....

-I'm worried about finding a good source for my raw meat.  I've read that some people freeze meat and then eat it raw.  The only grass-fed organic meat I can find would have to be shipped to me frozen so I couldn't really eat it fresh anyway.  Is there a consensus that it's ok to eat the meat after being frozen?  I live in a big city so you'd think there would be a grass-fed organic butcher around... but I can't seem to find any as of yet... I think my best bet may be Whole Foods and I would think they definitely get their meat frozen.

-Anyone have problems with parasites?  I've ordered AV's book but haven't read it yet.  From what I gather, he thinks parasites are good for you.  What is everyone's take on this?  For some reason parasites worry me more than bacteria... do I need to do parasite cleanses on this diet (an acupuncturist told me that my blood type is susceptible to parasites- don't know if blood type is really a factor or not).

-Any other tips for getting started and taking the first plunge into eating raw meat?  I've always eaten my meat well done, so it's hard getting used to the idea of raw (the texture in particular seems like it would take some getting used to)... any tips would be appreciated.

Thanks!
