OK, so when I first embarked on ZC, I held the assumption that I need not be afraid of consuming any amount of fat (in the form of beef backfat) and weight/adipose gain wouldn't be an issue. I figured appetite would guide my instincts on when to stop eating and such.

I tried it both ways, high fat and moderate protein, and moderate fat and higher protein. Here's what I found:

High fat/ moderate protein: WEIGHT GAIN. But great sustained energy. Body deviates from being lean.
Amount eaten (probably 1/4 pound fat to up to 1 pound chuck meat)

High protein/ lower fat: Weight gain also.... because I ended up eating a lot more meat because my appetite wasn't fulfilled as quickly. Eenergy did not last as well throughout the day.
Amount eaten (probably 1/7 pound fat to up to 2 pounds chuck meat)

If I eat NO meat and STRAIGHT fat, I can only stomach about 1/7-1/8 pound maybe? It doesn't taste too good by itself and appetite is killed fairly quickly. Perhaps I should eat fat until my appetiete is slightly killed, then consume the meat?

Bottom line is, I'm wondering what the latest agreed general consensus is on fat and meat ratio... There are some contradictory info in the Journals... For example, Lex states high fat causes weight gain for him. Kristel's journal begins by reflecting the same opinion, but then her last posts before she went inactive in 2008 states she advocates HIGH fat.

My experience with raw paleo ZC has been weight gain ONLY, I have not lost any weight at all... I don't really like to keep gaining endlessly if it it isn't lean mass. Am I just eating too many calories? WHat do I need to do to get a balance between energy and relative leanness?

Any inputs appreciated...

The damage is horrendous...

Thank god my family and relatives are probably safe...

Times like these that reinforce my convictions to be a doctor and work for Doctors Without Borders. Can't wait to get to medical school!

I used to have pretty bad cystic acne and for the past three years, gradually made dietary changes from junk all the time, to "mainstream healthy", then veges and meats, then raw vegan, than 80/10/10, and now raw paleo for 5 months.

My skin has been getting better the whole time SLOOOWLLYY, but even today if I take a vitamin c powder supplement (even the buffered ones), eat organ meats (i've tried kidneys, hearts, and livers all grassfed), eat anything with omega 3 in it (wild salmon or tuna), nuts, or anything with sugar, I get huge inflamed cystic acne developing within hours of consumption. I also get occasional milia all over my body which decreases if I avoid those above foods. I don't understand my body anymore.

I tried the organ meats as of late because I thought it would speed up my healing process, since all I eat nowadays is grassfed backfat mixed with grassfed ground beef (these things don't break me out).

Does anyone have an idea of what might be wrong here?

Any input would be appreciated...

Carnivorous / Zero Carb Approach / High meat bacteria
« on: February 14, 2011, 07:58:35 am »
I've been wondering, making high meat favors the proliferation of AEROBIC (O2) bacteria but yet the human gut would favor harbor ANAEROBIC bacteria... SO how does high meat work... if the purpose is to replenish healthy gut bacteria? As soon as you ingest the high meat, the acidic pH in the stomach would kill off a bunch and then whatever gets through to the gut, the aerobic bacteria would get overtaken by the anaerobic... i confuzed ???

Carnivorous / Zero Carb Approach / RAw Beef Kidney! YUM
« on: February 05, 2011, 04:24:12 am »
Just got my first raw beef kidney from NSB, and holy cow! The texture took a few minutes to get used to but it tastes like mushroom! YUMMY! Does pancreas taste good as well? I may try that next. Liver tastes disgusting to me for some reason. Does that mean my liver is in good shape but my kidneys are not? Hmmm

I just got off the phone with Slankers and I was asking questions about their dog food. I was asking about the quality of the pet food. Mainly I was like what's the difference in the pet food is the meat 2nd grade? And she was like
"it's not safe for human consumption." ANd I asked why and she replied:
"Well, the for the dog food when stuff falls on the ground we know we can throw it back in because its for the dogs and they can handle it."

 :o<Silence>... mainly on my end.

I'm getting second thoughts about ordering their pet food now..

Off Topic / What is the next frontier in societal nutrition?
« on: January 16, 2011, 02:38:07 am »
What is the next thing that needs to happen for the betterment of the health of society? If you were a person of great influence, (scientist, politician, whatever), a person who was hired to better the health of the world...

Would you....

Have science prove the benefits of a RAF diet so that mainstream society can will be motivated to adopt it? Have science prove and publish the effects of adulterated foods and sugar so that every single person understands the consequences? Have a great campaign that makes very clear diabetes, heart disease and other chronic diseases can be fixed via diet? Campaign a RAF centered food pyramid? Have celebrities and athletes endorse RAF?

Change the diets fed to sick people in hospitals? Change the treatment of some cancers with diet?

Politically speaking, would you impose structure that heavily favors gressfed over grainfed?

Furthermore,
regarding countries that need aid medically and food wise, would you implement RAFs? A lot of countries are shipped flour sugar and peanut butter rations which you could argue worsens the health of the people thereby exacerbating the situation by lowering their immunities to certain disease further.

RULES OF DEBATE:

1. No mentioning of HOW you go about accomplishing this, just WHAT you would do. I just don't want to hear pessimists argue about what you can or cannot do because people will feel this way about RAF or that.

2. No talking about fight club.

GO!!! l)

I'm looking for any books that explain the lipid hypothesis clearly and and also why saturated fats and cholesterol are good. I prefer them to contain scientific evidence to back up theory and any biochemistry explaining involved wouldn't hurt either. Would anyone know of such books?

Some books I've already found are:
Eat Fat Lose Fat by Mary Enig
Know Your Fats  by Mary Enig

So I've been kind of eating a mix of mostly ground beef, suet, back fat, and egg yolks for the past week and i've been getting fatter (less lean) than i've been. So I have been ZC more from coincidence than conscientiously. Is this a transitory period where ZCers usually gain fat/weight before becoming better fat adapted? I've also read that having a high fat to protein ratio plays a significant role in this.

FYI heres what I've been basically eating:

1.5 pound grassfed organic ground beef mixed with half a palm size (maybe smaller) or back fat and maybe about a half cup of suet everyday, and maybe 3-4 egg yolks now and again . The past three days I found the above to not be satiating enough so I also ate maybe up to an additional 2 tennis ball chunk size beefs.

Maybe I am not getting enough fat so I over ate the protein and the excess has turned to glucose and then fat?

Today I ate no egg yolks but I upped my fat that I mix in with my ground beef a lot more. I was eating it as I normally do but I found that I felt full pretty fast so I set the rest aside. I ate some more several hours later and I felt full fast again. Basically today I ate 1.3 pounds of total mixture and I'm feel full. Normally I would be wanting more meat/egg yolks and whatnot but I feel very full. And I also feel somewhat heavy. Is this because I'm getting the fat/protein ratio right?

Maybe the heaviness feeling is due to putting way more suet into my mixture than back fat? Maybe put in a larger ratio of back fat since that is supposedly easier for digestion and will thus get rid of the heavy feeling?

I would appreciate any anecdotes/advice/input from you guys.
Thanks  :)

Journals / Ray's Journal
« on: December 14, 2010, 07:35:21 am »
Hello everyone, allow me to introduce myself:

My name is Ray, I am a 25 yo pre-med undergraduate student from Pennsylvania, USA

I'm majoring in Cell and Molecular Biology.

My interests include: basketball, violin, martial arts (kungfu, jujitsu, wrestling), biochemistry, philosophy, gymnastics, graphology, scuba diving, and all outdoor activities. I also take special interest in holistic nutrition, alternative and emergency medicine, standup comedy, and Japanese culture (I'm first generation Japanese American.

My goal is to go to Stanford, UC San Francisco, Harvard, or UPenn medical school, maybe get a concurrent MPH degree and specialize in surgery or emergency medicine (acute medicine basically) and have a career with Doctors Without Borders to help natural disaster and war victims. Once I accumulate enough experience in the "trenches" (so to speak) I want to join the upper ranks if need be to implement large scale policy change to benefit the people I feel need the help most. I would like to work towards a large impactful and meaningful goal that betters the world.

This is one reason why I want to perfect my diet, so I can work hard and do my best for every patient I meet. Also, I used to have HORRIBLE cystic acne which has improved through diet. I'm still not 100% clear but getting there.

This summer I will be volunteering on a health project in either Ghana, Uganda, Tanzania, India, Kenya, or somewhere in southeast Asia. I'm trying to go to a place where I can witness true poverty, as well as medical procedures (surgeries, and the like). I would like this trip to really shock me out of my comfort zone and have a big impact on my soul.

I am not very religious at all— if I have an inherent faith in anything, it is only in the innate good of all people. My life is an adventure full of wonderful friends and experiences I would not trade for anyone else’s. I would also not want to ever go back even a day in my life because every day I become closer to my goals; every day I strive to be a better person than I was yesterday. In general I am a very happy, energetic person— and also self-proclaimed king of enthusiasm.

I'm 5'5 and 125lb right now. And I had been mainstream nutrition healthy eater for 1 year, then vegan and eventually 80/10/10 (disaster) for 9 months. I began raw paleo in early November.

My current daily diet consists of:

Wakeup- glass water and piece of fruit (kiwi lately for high Vitamin C) (Maybe banana for Potassium- avoid glucose intolerance), Also maybe cabbage, kale, or romaine lettuce juice (I blend in blender then strain)

Mid morning- 1/2 lb grassfed organic beef mixed with good chunk of raw beef back fat and suet (suet is grain-finished)

Late afternoon- 1/2 lb grassfed organic beef with same mix as above

Snack- Suet (its waxy but I love it... how much is too much?)

Optional: Frozen pureed liver ice cube for Vitamin A and other nutrients (I freeze it in a ice cube tray, as I hate the taste of liver)
Maybe some egg yolks

I feel like I need more variety in my diet. I don't feel quite optimal yet. Working on it. I had a recent setback with ghee which has left eczema like rashes all over my body and has yet to completely subside... By the way stay away from benadryl kids... My brain was short-circuited for an entire day.

Anyway... NICE TO MEET YOU ALL!!!

Health / Help! I'm being eaten alive by fungi, do I need high meat?
« on: December 10, 2010, 08:47:19 pm »
So some weeks now, my diet has been maybe a fruit or two in the morning, then a mix of egg yolks and between 1-2 lbs of grassfed ground beef later, with a good amount of ghee. I eat pieces of liver occasionally. I recently tried to skip ghee and go with backfat or bone marrow (I mostly get the dry gross kind and not the tasty creamy kind) but they dont taste good... While my energy level is ok and my facial acne has cleared up (a sign from my body that I'm in the right direction), I have gotten severe dry skin on my hands and lips to the point where I'm getting cracks and bleeding and I also have gotten jock itch infection that has spread to i would say 40% of my body. I'm treating it with prescription cream and tea tree oil and its keeping some of it in check.

Do I need to start eating aged meat or high meat to restore my gut flora? I need help, this fungal (yeast ) infection is eating my body alive!! :'( :o

Omnivorous Raw Paleo Diet / Starting out with budget...
« on: November 28, 2010, 08:51:07 am »
Hi guys,
I'm a 25y male from PA, USA. I'm new to the forum but I've spend several hours reading the forum for several days and started omnivorous raw paleo last week. Like many people on the forum I arrived on the Vegetarian/Vegan/RawVegan/80/10/10 train which was a disaster...

Anyway to get to the point, I was wondering if I can ask a couple of questions? This past week I have been eating about a pound of grass-fed ground beef with 4 spoonfuls of ghee mixed in... is this okay as a staple in my diet?

I have a budget of around 45-50 dollars per week and my local wegman's foodstore sells grass-fed beef for $5 a pound. Chuck is $6 a pound. I believe grain-fed but "organic" chuck at my local supermarket is $4 a pound. I don't eat grain-fed GROUND beef. Egg yolks do not fill me up at all and I don't eat raw chicken thus far due to the water contamination... I eat a small portion of beef liver every other day.

So I have 2 issues...

1. Given the info above, how can I construct a diet that is within or close to my weekly budget? of $45-50
So far I've been thinking:
Each day consume 1 lb of grassfed ground beef = 7 x $5 = $35
Eat a additional half a pound of grain-fed organic chuck = 7 x .5 pound x $4 = $14
Total for meat only: $49
Beef liver I only buy occasionally in a pack so negligible.

Is this calorie range appropriate for a moderately active 5'5 125lber?

2. BUT, I have a need for making sure I have all the nutrients (vitamins and minerals, choline, etc) I need so in addition to the above my breakfast is a "green juice" consisting of cabbage, spinach, or kale, and I eat 1 or 2 pieces of fruit (apple or pear). And at night if I get hungry I will steam broccoli lightly and eat it. The cost for said  amount of vegetables and fruits per week is about $13. Should I keep these non-meat items on my menu? Should I nix the fruit to buy more ground beef? Should I not eat ground beef some days and eat the grainfed chuck instead (which would lower some cost)? Should I add seafood? Should I ditch grain-fed all-together and buy grassfed only and also go no carb?

Thanks in advance for any help you guys can offer.

Ray
