General Discussion / bugger...tried some "conventional food" today
« on: February 15, 2012, 07:15:02 am »
Came out of the gym today, ate my daily 20oz ground beef + 10g cacao beans + 10g walnuts post workout snack, and then had the hardest craving for turkey pepperettes and whiskey.  (Pepperettes are mass produced cured meat sticks)  SO I thought OK I'll try some pepperettes.

My effin' head is pounding now.  Heartrate very high compared to what it usually is.  Holy headache.  Every beat of my heart is like a shockwave going through my head right now,  WTH!   I'm shaking and feel weak and am bloated.  Brutal.  It's already subsiding, I ate about 250g of the stuff.  What gets me is that people eat this stuff EVERY DAY!!! :-O

Ingredient list from the package:
-turkey, potassium lactate, salt, sugar, hydrolyzed corn protein, potassium choride, spices and spice extracts, onion powder, dextrose, lemon powder, sodium ascorbate, garlic powder, smoke flavor, sodium nitrite, smoke.

I feel like shit.  And typing out that ingredient list makes me feel even more like shit, like what the fuck was I thinking!  I threw the rest of them out...and I didn't give into the whiskey btw, lol.  I hope I haven't gone too far backwards now :(  But at least it's really hit home that raw paleo is the way to go.  I'm still blown away that I used to be able to eat this crap every day, and the general population continues to do so :O

Instincto / Anopsology / birdfeed
« on: February 14, 2012, 12:43:00 am »
Hey, so I've been eating a pretty one sided diet lately, with the only meat source coming from beef. (raw of course)

Been doing a bit of reading on here and see that it's the opinion (by GCB and others) that variety is important, so I'm going to try some other meats.

I was thinking trying chicken, turkey, and duck.  I have access to "certified organic" birds, but unsure what that means exactly...I'll be asking the farmers what they feed their animals before I buy..so what sorts of things should birds be consuming so it's safe for us to eat?  Or what shouldn't they be consuming?

Thx

General Discussion / eating bones
« on: January 07, 2012, 11:54:49 pm »
Has anyone tried eating bones?  I don't mean the marrow, like actual bones....filing, crushing, or grinding down some bones, and sprinkling the result over your meal, or mixing it with some water and drinking it...or?

I couldn't find any info online about this....I'm unsure too if we humans could efficiently digest/process bones.  I was just thinking about this as a source of calcium/minerals.

Thoughts?

General Discussion / raw fish
« on: October 27, 2011, 05:07:32 am »
I like fish but have never eaten it raw.  Saw some at the grocery store today tho. (one I rarely go to)  There was Whiting (whole, not gutted) and Trout. (gutted)  Both the kinds of fish came from Lake Huron, and were labelled "fresh."  Of course the girl behind the counter had no idea how fresh exactly, but they hadn't been frozen.

Anyways, how do I know the source is safe?  Or how old it is? Is there some way to tell by looking at the fish?  Do I need to gut the Whiting before eating?  I did some reading about fish and there's a lot of scare tactics out there regarding parasites and whatnot....so I need some guidance plz :D

I DID buy some live oysters which tasted wonderful btw.  I still don't understand how TWO live ones can cost $3, when you can buy a can of 15 smoked/processed ones for $0.95 lol

General Discussion / beef heart preparation ideas
« on: September 03, 2011, 05:05:24 am »
I love my beef heart, but it's far too tough for me to eat raw.  I still slow cook it, which makes it tender and taste fine....but I wish it was raw.  I thought I might try grinding it up, or making it into a paste in the food processor...or??  Anyone have any other ideas?

General Discussion / how long is beef good for after thawing?
« on: August 25, 2011, 06:07:51 pm »
So my paranoia has set in slightly lol.

After I thaw beef from the freezer, and left in the fridge, how many days "should" it still be ok for to eat raw?  I've been letting it go max 24hrs, but timing things all the time can get complicated.

And what if left in a lunchbag for a few hrs at a mediocre cool temp...how long can I leave it before cooking might be needed?

Opinions welcome :)

General Discussion / liver...too much of a good thing?
« on: August 05, 2011, 08:20:14 pm »
I love eating raw beef liver, I look forward to it daily.  But how much is too much?  Guess I'm worried about the vitamin A content...could it be too much of a good thing?  I generally eat 2-3oz/day, which is 192-287% of the daily recommended allowance....that combined with the rest of my diet puts me at around 500-750% of my daily allowance...is it too much, or?

General Discussion / Defining "grass finished"
« on: July 27, 2011, 07:26:32 am »
I buy all my beef (which I eat raw) from a friend's farm.  Their animals are grassfed and grassfinished.  Prior to finishing, they're pastured, and will eat grass bales.  But when the animals are finished, they're fed corn...but they're fed the entire corn stalk/plant.  Since the whole plant is considered a grass, they can claim that the animal is "grass finished."  Feeding the whole plant does increase fat mass.

So are these really grassfinished animals?  I only ask because I read somewhere once that corn silage fed to beef can increase the chances of e-coli.  I'm actually just ASSUMING the corn is fed to the animals as silage since I don't know of another method to feed them the whole plant.

Opinions??

Hot Topics / The Brain Power Cookbook
« on: June 07, 2009, 12:01:05 am »
Has anyone read this book, "the brain power cookbook" ?  I saw it on a tv show called "the DR's" and it looks intriguing.  My local store/library doesn't have a copy.  I'm wondering if this is a paleo friendly book, and if it's worth my $15 lol.  ANyone?
